daywatcher: Those countries are mostly ethnically homogeneous, and have their languages as the national language. Nigeria is a multi-ethnic unitary state with an official language which happens to be a colonial one. In any case, that isn't even the important thing. No one has stopped you developing a Yoruba curriculum. If they were teaching Engineering in Yoruba in LASU, no one who doesn't speak or write Yoruba would bother applying. That's a different thing from going to study a professional course with English as the language of instruction, then having to waste your time with irrelevant courses that adds nothing to your profession. It is understandable in basic education (primary and secondary), but not educating a bunch of adults that came to the university to train themselves as professionals. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

whitebeard:you are not making any sense. It says yoruba is now mandotary for "admission" in to Lagos schools. It means you need to pass Yoruba in your waec or what ever exam you wanna do to get into Lagos school, just like you need English to get into the federal schools in Nigeria. If you are not complaining about needing french to get admitted in France, why are you crying about needing Yoruba to get into Yoruba schools? English is federal language, the law didn't affect federal schools. Go to federal school and leave Yoruba school for Yorubas if you cannot cope with our language. 18 Likes 1 Share |

I think this law is not well thought out. What of foreign students? What of children of soldiers or police etc that are transferred to Lagos State and will be denied admission because of yoruba language. If Lagos wants to be a mega world class city, one of the crucial things to do is to simplify communication among its residents and not foreclose options. This is a minus to Lagos who usually is a pacesetter. 1 Like |

Obi1kenobi: this go beyond education my guy, we are too fast to compare our disorganised governmental system to a stable government of other countries goto East, even in the bank the igbos ain't ashamed to speak Igbo language but Yoruba here, in a corporate organization, you will hardly know the employee are yorubas how do we restore our language value if not through schools? the governor unanimously with the lawmakers had passed the law and there is ntn anyone can do to reverse that, so this debate has no meaning to me 24 Likes 2 Shares |

I knew this was going to happen one day. Because no matter how educated a Yoruba person is they find it very difficult to speak English or pronounce another tribe's name. I won't be surprised very soon primary school teachers will be teaching all subjects with Yoruba and when they eventually travel to another place for youth service You See them finding it very difficult to communicate with good English. I'm Oduduwa is disappointed with this law where ever he isI can see how delude you are. English is a foreign language and It's killing our local lang6and culture and a law has been pass to awake the dead language but you are here saying rubbish about a an educated Yoruba man can speak or pronounce good English have you ever ask yourself why did AMERICA have their own version of English instead of British that colonized them. It's high time we promote ourselves and our own things in our own way.if you are in any European country you will be forced to go to school to learn their local dialect before you can be consider in any things. The first step of restructuring should be language colonization. Every region should use their local officials language to communicate in their region and I believe with this we are ready for separation or restructure. 20 Likes 1 Share |

This bill is targeted at the Igbos. Which other ethnic groups go to school in large numbers in Lagos more than the Igbos? Igbos make una shine una eyes. When Igbos generate taxes used by the state government to build thise schools...they didn't ask that you must be able to speak Yoruba. I wonder why other states in SW have not come up with the same legislation. How many Yorubas attend schools in other regions, if other regions had to create the same laws? 1 Like 1 Share |

RALPHOW:Of course he can. All he needs to do is to pass Yoruba as a subject, during NECO or SSCE exams, and to do that, he must learn to speak the language. It is a bit like going to study in Germany or Russia. You would have to take a year or so, to master the language of instruction. 11 Likes |

asha80: Igbo speaking in east is Paramount somewhat that some teachers resort to diverting English language to Igbo for student assimilation (e.g mathematics) you can't see this in yorubaland. why are we ashamed of our language, when you must know how to speak French before entry France? even in ekiti, osun and Oyo, it's very common to see people adopting English in almost all their communication while in office 1 Like |

LaudableXX: You support this but you would not support disintegration so you could be like Germany and Russia? This is why Europeans are wiser than crazy Africans...All Germans speak german...Doing this will mean that the children will be put under pressure to study another language while they are in their presumed country? How does this make sense? |
Re: Yoruba Mandatory For Admission In Lagos Tertiary Institutions by happney65: 11:29am On Feb 12, 2018 |
texazzpete: No sir,Don't mix things up..What is being Said is that we should place importance on our Language..Do you think if the British disregard their language the English language will get to the point it is now?I doubt it Infact i support all states of the federation to apply these at their respective states institutions..Before now we already have different school fees being paid by indigiens and non indigiens..So if a state decides to require it's language as prerequisite for admission in its schools,so be it.. English is still our official language and nothing is going to stop that.. 6 Likes |

is that all u see, u can't see the hatred this would bring, besides anyone can learn Yoruba anywhere anytime why make it mandatory, again who Yoruba language help. There are different types of Yoruba, which Yoruba are they talking about.Yes there different version of Yoruba language, but I want you to know that we have a unified Yoruba language that connect all the omonuabi's together very understandable. It's a welcome ideal and it will promote our culture and it will also employe most of the Yoruba teachers who are out of work. 11 Likes |

Trash. Trash. Misplaced priority. I studied Yoruba language in junior school and always beat Yoruba students in my class. Today I can't speak the language because I am not interested. This law will achieve nothing. If a child has no interest he/she will not learn the language despite studying it in school. 1 Like |
