I don't have a referral but I noticed that Indeed and Monster posted some open positions in Regina recently. You may also connect with recruiters on LinkedIn. All the best.

Ok....thanks Bro...I have applied for most of them but I always look for more hence the reason I wrote this. Thanks once again!

Landing experience...

Landed on the 12th, came in via local arrivals because I was in America for a couple of weeks before landing. Before I knew it, i saw way out of Calgary airport without seeing Customs or Immigration. Turned back to go to Canada Border Services and the lady was surprised i passed through. I had to explain that I am coming from America and did not enter through International Arrivals. She took my passport/ COPR and came back in 2 mins with it stamped.

Was a bit irritated with the process sha because I did not hear anything like Welcome to Canada etc smiley but then again it was good because I did not have to queue up or wait my turn or answer any questions.

13th & 14th- Got my SIN, Opened bank account, Health card processed....They were all quite straightforward

Weather is manageable if you dress right.

How do people approach recuiters on LinkedIn. Do you straight up say I am relocating to CA soon and looking for a job OR you connect first and subsequently ask if there are any opportunities.

I am asking because I have read about both views and there was no conclusion on which was the best approach.

Have a good LinkedIN profile, sign up on monster and put key words on your CV.

View recruiters profile, for me its recruiters that have always contacted me.

You can send message also if they advertise a job of your interest.

Welcome to Calgary. You can download the City of Calgary newcomer services guide by following the link below:
http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/CNS/Documents/Immigrants-Newcomers-Refugees/CLIP-Newcomer-Guide.pdf

PS - Its a document you might just want to save on your computer for easy / quick reference on various topics relating to settling in Calgary.

As per the Watsap group for Calgary folks, anyone with info on this should please respond, cos I was just asking someone about same a couple of days ago but the link he had was a generic FSWP naija group. It'll be nice to see an active Calgary-based Naija immigrant Watsap group. I must note that from my experience, Indian/Asian folks are doing great in terms of networking/collaboration over here.

@Wura27 hope you're enjoying the Calgary weather so far grin Never mind, it can only get better...spring is around the corner!

Hello people,,
Congrats to every that has concluded their landing formalities.
Quick one please: Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Calgary to spend 2/3nights that can offer free airport pickup too.
At least to help me with accommodation troubles before I conclude with any rental property.
Kindly advise.

cc. V-cole (queen of Calgary) and any other person familiar with Calgary and its environs.

Many thanks...

Use airbnb..it will save you money..and as for airport pick up, it may not be necessary as long as you have the airbnb or hotel address, cabs should be able to take you there. Cheers!

And another billion from me for @vcole. Always writing intelligently and objectively. thanks for your insight because I've been trying to figure out how to handle this career situation.

I've said it many times and I will say it again.
Contributions made on Nairaland has made a huge impact in my life. Knowledge is indeed power.

Just another word of encouragement, @Fusion recommendations are on point. I gave my husband some tips I read from people here, we haven't even landed and he's getting calls for jobs from Canada . For me ,I haven't decided yet because I would like to improve myself and switch careers so I'm considering taking on a "survival job" while at it.

There was someone who posted an "SOS" awhile back about having challenges with securing supply chain jobs. Kindly pm me and I will share what has worked for us. Sorry I didn't respond then because we had not started receiving feedback as per job search .

May the lines fall for us all in pleasant places.

"Kindly pm me and I will share what has worked for us."

Let me rephrase that statement for the sake of others.

We didn't do anything extra as per job search. Basically ,we did what @fusion23 recommended. I think what made the most difference was matching keys words relevant with his job role. And he did that after we went through seminars on access employment website, the whole Job Scan system thing and applying to every job in his field available to mankind. Lol.

We also downloaded the freetone app which has been very useful.

Another point I would like to add is that if you earn big in Nigeria, please don't set your expectations too high.
it's okay to give yourself a standard or target but also be realistic and give room for growth. Of course there are people who get great jobs immediately and we'll all get there maybe not just the same time. Just keep aiming and never give up.

Its been Gods grace but preparation matters a lot, even before filling out the express entry was already preparing for jobs in Canada cos it was IT, to make things better I got my PPR in just 28 days.

And i thought I wasnt prepared.. The day I landed applied for jobs, got a phone interview the next day ...but the job was in montreal and they wanted a billingual person..

Got my first job in 2weeks and moved to ottawa...but the pay could be better..the challenging part was applying for other jobs for like a senior consultant position..

I dont see them as really negatives cos I already had a job. But yeah I applied and got no from PWC, Deloitte, Avande, Sierra Systems..Deloitte was even more frustrating as i did the last intevriew with the hiring manager...Sierra systems was like no Government Experince..lool after seeing my cv that i just came from Naija....but finally got a better role in edmonton. Fujitsu..my advice is just to be open minded. And also canadian experience helps after a while.so u cna do 6 months and move to something bigger.

Please did you buy the credit pack too and were you assigned a Canadian number after buying the credit pack or how did you do it?

Thanks

Sorry for late response.

I didn't buy the credit pack. Went to the option of getting a Canadian number and they requested payment. Used my Nigerian card to pay about 7 dollars and that was it. I think the credit pack is only useful if you want to be calling another country other than US/Canada .

We landed via Ethiopian Airline last week Sunday and it was a smooth flight asides from the fact that it was super longgggg. The food was ok, inflight entertainment was just there as there were no recent movies but in all it was an ok flight for the price.

We landed in Toronto and it was smooth all the way plus the officers were sooo polite....jeezzzz. We declared all the food stuff we had but our bags were not checked, the woman was just gisting with us and that really made us feel comfortable and at ease. The weather wasn't also that baddddd, just ensure you layer up properly.

We have been able to open bank accounts, get our mobile lines, SIN and we also did the driver's knowledge test which we passed. We were informed that we could register straight away for the G licence but with this plenty snow.....I would rather wait till the weather is better. Just the health card registration left now (I guess). I have also started searching for jobs (customer service) and I did like two interviews this week but still waiting for the outcome and the next step.

Thank you all for your contributions so far as I was able to learn a whole lot from you all.

P.S If anyone has any leads for Customer Service role or any other job, kindly holla oooooo.....I no dey pose.

It was pretty cool and really fast, didn't spend up to 10 mins for documentation. We were asked for POF so we just told her how much cash we had on us and told her the remaining was in our Nigerian account but she didn't ask to see it.
