for me azpi has less of the blame cause he tried to do something. it was a 50-50. had he succeeded in clearing that ball, he would have been hailed. chris made a big mistake by playing that pass across goal. his accuracy on that pass was reduced due to kante that was in front of him. that ball wouldn't have looked dangerous if fab had not been lazy. kante would have taken that ball comfortably and it wouldn't have looked like a danger. fab was simply lazy there. he was just lazy and thought left the work to someone else without knowing that iniesta will be charging down on the ball.

This narrative is false. Azpi had no option but to try to win that ball first time. His only mistake there is misjudging his slide.

If a defender and a striker are running at each other at full speed from opposite directions, the defender must win the ball. One drop of the shoulder will take him out of the game otherwise.

You cannot turn left-or-right when your leg muscles are fully engaged on braking your forward momentum. Therefore Azpi cannot "stay on his feet" after getting there at such speed. If he tries to brake his speed and stay on his feet, Iniesta already has momentum in the direction of the ball and will easily go left-or-right to take him out the game.

That's why I said I would do exactly the same as Azpi.

Imagine one eediot commentator on BT Sport yesterday saying Sergi Roberto is Barcas first choice right-back. Barca fan woulda punched him.

Okay this issue of barca's equalizer have been going on now for long. My opinion on it is this after replaying the incident countless times.

First Christensen intention in that situation was first to make a pass to the most free of the player in that 18 box area. Three players were around the 18 box, Rudiger standing adjacent have already been marked by Suarez, azplicueta was very far from Christensen, while Fabregas was the freest man for that pass.

The pass from Christensen came and passed very quickly to Fabregas and Fab been his slow sef reacted very slowly to the pass. (But that is by the way because he had little to do in that situation).

Azplicueta will go as the second culprit here, he showed a tackle of an unprofessional player. He has already went to his feet without the ball reaching Iniesta. ( who slide tackles when the opposition is not yet with the ball on his feet?) His miscalculated tackle gave Iniesta the chance to nick and pass his very quickly giving messi a larger space to shoot.

Finally I will say it was lack of proper understanding between Christensen, Fabregas and Azplicueta with Chris and Azplicueta the major culprit...

Nah, there is no braking at that speed - nothing to do with whether his feet is on the ground or in the air. The moment he brakes is the moment Iniesta change direction and leave him standing still.

If you approach face-on that speed, you are going in for the tackle, the block or the foul, nothing else.

His only other option is to close down slower leaving himself time & room to react to Iniesta. Given Iniesta was already favourite for the ball, that may leave too much room for Iniesta to pass the ball unchallenged or have a free shot like this.

Show me one player in the gif you attached that was not looking at the ball when Chris had it or turned towards the ball in a position that infers they were expecting?

Truth is, Chris made an irresponsible and amateur decision to make a cross pass to that area, especially when your opponents have closed down on you and the area you are passing the ball to is the final third of your half and the center at that. Barca were pressing into Chelsea and Chelsea wanted to play from behind.

Did you observe how fast Messi and Iniesta pounced immediately the pass left Chris's foot? That is because they could smell blood even before the pass went past Fab.
