INEC Stands By 2019 Election Timetable — Prof. Yakubu by zakim(m): 5:34am On Feb 27, 2018
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, says the electoral body has no reason to change the current sequence of the 2019 general elections released based on the provision of the existing laws.

Professor Yakubu, who said this yesterday in Abuja at a regular consultative meeting with the media, did not rule out the possibility of looking at the sequence of the election timetable if there was any compelling issue.

“On 9th January, we issued the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 General Elections based on our powers and extant laws and nothing has changed. There is a principle behind the choice of these dates- as our democracy matures, we should be moving from uncertainty to certainty.

“As far as the Commission is concerned, there is no legal lacuna for now; we are working based on existing laws. But if something happens tomorrow, we will come out clear and tell Nigerians, but I think we are not operating based on conjectures,” he said.

The INEC chairman, who reiterated the concern of the electoral body over what he called “monetization of the electoral process,” said the commission was already working with security agencies to stop the menace.

Professor Yakubu said INEC was optimistic about the conduct of free, fair and credible general elections in view of its continued engagement with critical stakeholders in the electoral process.

He said the commission had finished all the preparatory steps for the 2019 general elections, adding that practical steps had been taken to implement provisions of the Election Project Plan (EPP).

The INEC chairman said the commission was making efforts to ensure that voting process was easier for persons living with disabilities (PWDs), including pregnant and lactating women as well as the aged.

He ruled out the possibility of giving opportunities for underage voters in national elections conducted by the INEC, stressing that the electoral body would do “whatever it takes to clean up the voter register so that only those who are eligible are allowed to vote.”

There is a principle behind the choice of these dates- as our democracy matures, we should be moving from uncertainty to certainty.

But the 1999/2003 elections, presidency was last, what law did that come from?

We should all know that the proposed policy from national assembly is best for democracy.

INEC want to conduct fake election again neither are they interested in stopping under age voting. I don't know why the date is more important than the election it's self. I support national assembly the presidential election should come first to allow some atom of credibility infact we are even saying let election be hold on different month or year.
This is my first time i seeing INEC rejecting an electoral amendment bill from the national assembly. We hope they will help us make our election more credible and acceptable than previous one.

How would they influence who become governor and president? When the governor virtually controls the state which they are part of? And the president whom majorly controls the governor's?

The national assembly members are evil, senseless and self centered.
they abandoned burning and serious issues and start chasing shadow.
They never pass any bill to stop fulani herdsmen from killing nigerians, they never pass any bill to compel state governors to pay salaries before any project and lots more.
it's good the way they're rendering themselves useless.

Immediately you win an election in Nigeria, all security agent chiefs in your State deflect to you. If it happened with Goodluck and his appointed Police IG who be Governor?

That's why they want to be elected first

From the very hour you are announced winner, money, power, influence and people gravitate towards you.

Hello Nigerians, come let's reason together, no reasonable person in Nigeria today is happy with d situation of things most especially on the economy and security of the nation. But then, 2019 election is around the corner and some political parties with some other fellow Nigerians like me are planning to oust PMB. Hmmm, let's think well about this oo. We know he hasn't performed well to be reelected but giving the seat to another northerner won't do anybody any good. For me, I just want power to move away from the north back to the south come 2023. This is because , if another northerner gets there, he wld want two terms, meaning the south would wait till 2027 and that would be 12 years for the north. Haba...that's a cheat. So, my candid opinion is that PMB 2019...abeg

For Election to be FREE AND FAIR, it be must generally presumed to be free And Fair , the PROCESS, the METHODOLOGY , the PERCEPTION and the observation must be generally accepted to be Free and Fair.
Yakub is a card member of APC, he can't never Never conduct elections that will not favor Buhari.2019 Elections will be between Other political parties and ÀPC, while APC and INEC are One political party, other political parties will be contesting against INEC and ApC.

With the presidential election coming last the governorship, rep and senate candidates are on their own infact they will have more time within their states and communities campaigning than running to Abuja.

What power does a senator have to influence a police IG or army chief and the organs of the party whom he/she was elected on just a week or 2 ago?

Don't you forget everything and all candidates would have been set already.

We both know which policy is best. The proposed policy from national assembly gives an even spread to seek the best candidate amongst political parties even the unpopular ones.
