Onizea: I brought in 6pcs of braided wigs when I visited in january and nobody disturbed me. I had them in my hand luggage. As for clothes u are better off buying what u need from here. Australia can be expensive. I went into one store called Myer, the prices made me sick. The only affordable place was Kmart, best and less, target, Factorie(their sales rack). Went to Salvos and Good Sammy but most of the items there were worn out. |

Long post alert!!! My entry was pretty much similar to everyone's. Hassle-free no much questions asked. This actually blew my mind because I was expecting some form of interrogation from Immigration but none happened. No stamps....nothing. In my mind I was like 'abi this is a setup ni' like they were performing a psychological test or evaluation. I proceeded to Customs for checks but those ones just asked me to pass my bag through scanner after informing them I had 'Cassava flakes' As I made to walk towards the exit, I kept thinking this people will call me back o. How can I just enter your country to come and live permanently and you'll just make it easy like that. A friend picked me up at the airport and took me to a house he had already secured for me till my arrival. The plan was to stay in his house but he had some important guests who came same day. He paid for a week. When I asked to refund he declined. I appreciated him sincerely. I had other friends I could stay with but I just decided I wasn't giving up my freedom jare . Let me just add that I have the best housemates anyone could wish for. We are like family mehn. I have never traveled for such a long duration before so I underestimated coming jet-lag. I arrived late on a Thursday and didn't sleep till daybreak Next morning, I was at the bank to pick up my ATM card and update my account details (since I opened from Naija). Jet-lag effect continued o 2hrs to 3 hrs sleep at night only. Meanwhile, back in Naija I applied for about 10 jobs only to receive rejection emails few days or weeks after. This got me irritated so I stop applying. There was no point (at least, so I felt). By Sunday, I decided to make the best use of my wakefulness. I applied for about 6 or 7 vacancies and wrote the company info down in book. I also copied the name and contact details of the recruiting agent/hiring manager. Monday, I called a few of them and waited till Tuesday to call the others. I was told it was a bad idea that I would appear forward. ..... as far as I was concerned that one na story ..... Make I just follow human being word ... no be say I wan beg am for anything nah. I dey follow God word steady not to talk of person like me . Actually, na the koko be that.......God first Me: Hello 'name of agent/recruiter' my name is 'name'. I applied for 'position' and would like to confirm you got my application.......or......this is just a follow-up call to my application for 'position' Agent/Recruiter: "Sorry, what's your name again?" Me: 'Name' Agent/Recruiter: Just a second....."let me pull up your application".....or..... "let me have a look at your CV". At this point, they ask a few questions about your CV, Visa status and a little summary of the job requirements and who they are looking for . Some may just go through your CV and ask that you give them some time to go through other CVs. One of them told me the position was filled and that he would forward my CV to his colleagues. Another(an agent) followed up our conversation with an email asking for further information so he could forward my CV to the hiring manager in the company. The appointed one (a recruitment manager for her company) asked me the bolded questions..... I called her on Tuesday. She called me back on Thursday to confirm my availability and schedule an interview for Friday. Sent an email later in the day that interview postponed till the following Tuesday. The interview lasted about 30mins to 45mins. I left the company to return home. I was still waiting for a train when my phone rang. Recruitment manager: Congratulations 'my name'. Blah blah blah. Before I got home, all documents and link to start induction was already in my box. I was asked to resume on Thursday while they get my system and access ready. On Wednesday I just started feeling sick. Anyway, I banished the feeling in the name of Jesus. Luckily, my laptop wasn't ready so I was asked to resume on Monday. I have since started work sha. Is God not a good God? I got a professional job in 12 days after I entered this country with almost nothing. God just keeps blowing my mind sha . I entered this country with USD850 on my card and AUD70 cash in hand. I made up my mind Naija money was to remain in Naija. I was not willing to bring more than that. I have assets/investment that could be easily liquidated back home though if yawa wan gas Let me add that it pays to change your naira to AUD at the Airport. The rate used was N280. Be mindful of the limit though AUD10,000 or you declare. Couples can hold like AUD9,500 each. No risk in holding cash in my opinion. I felt like protesting when I withdrew AUD with my USD denominated Mastercard. Thieffy thieffy banks them. Loving life here already. Almost a month old now . System is built with everyone in mind (elderly, physically challenged, nursing mothers, children, women, men, cyclists, car owners, leggedesbenz .....everybody). Hmm, my eyes have seen things too o.......abi what do you think?.......my housemate went to church barefooted with short pants (as in knickers ..not pata o) because the church is behind our house. JJC like me was dressed in suit......felt uncomfortable throughout the service when preacher sef no dress reach me . I bumped into same guy about 100m away from home barefooted too. He was going to the Australian Post......... araoko sombori . Nobody send anybody and anybody send nobody . You don't have to do a white-collar or professional job to make it in this country. In fact, some of the blue-collar workers earn more than their white-collar counterparts. Whatever makes you happy though. My epistle don do NB: Please don't quote entire post if you wish to reply 82 Likes 3 Shares |

The living most high God can do all things. What people see as impossible is what he makes possible in our lives. I am a living witness and i will forever thank my JESUS. God created the world, so taking you and i to Australia or anywhere in the world and settling us there is just the least of the things He(God) can do, whether that country immigration like am or not.JUST BELIEVE AND GOD WILL DO IT. 15 Likes |

This is just my honest opinion. You can decide to take it or leave it. I know there are people who love it the way it is but before you crucify me, remember I’m only voicing out my experience of living in AustraliaI just discovered this thread and this Seun's post has got me thinking. I have OZ PR but working in NZ and I was thinking of either doing a transfer to my firm's Melbourne office or just moving there and getting a job. I've loved most of the things I read about Melbourne until I started hearing about the Sudanese issue. And with this post I'm worried, although truth is there are racial issues everywhere, I haven't experienced any racial issue since I moved to New Zealand, I'm the only black guy in my firm and we all get along well. I'm an auditor so I work with different clients who are white , they're all quite nice. To be honest though sometimes in the streets I do wonder what people are thinking when I walk past, there are a few blacks here, you'll at least see like 1 per day, who will nod or smile at you unto say una no many. But I sometimes maybe I overthink things, like if I see a lady coming on the otherside and clutching her bag, I'd wonder if she's doing so because she sees a black guy coming or its just how she holds her bag normally. In a country like Australua or New Zealand, you will you can't help but feel like the odd one sometimes, you're not in Naija. So you just gotta focus on why you're there, build your home and give your family a better life. I'm planning on moving back to OZ and specifically Melbourne so I can get my OZ passport, and by my estimation, I should be able to pay deposit for mortgage within a year. I think Australia is not for the faint of heart, you need to work and hustle. If you're a professional doing a menial job, don't stay there, find ways to improve yourself while you're doing it, I've met lots of indians who have low paying day jobs and use their car for uber after work. My bro did menial jobs for 9 months, today he's fully recognised as a Doctor and earning good pay, he is in the process of building his house. PS. When I'm about to finally make my Melbourne move I'm gonna come here to get pointers from those who live there. 15 Likes |

bellong: Thanks boss. I'm actually torn between shipping down my stuffs or getting them over there based on the cost effectiveness of the available options. Are there used home appliances markets in Melbourne? Please i need your opinions Thanks |
Re: Living In Australia/life As An Australian Immigrant by bellong: 6:43am On Feb 25, 2018 |
Noreal: Gumtree Salvo stores OP shops Australian Red Cross stores. You can always get good used appliances from those places. For gumtree, you must test the appliance before taking it home to avoid son story. I am not sure it is economically viable to ship your stuff. You can compare the cost. 2 Likes 1 Share |

uckennety: Chadstone in Melbourne is popular because it has the biggest shopping centre in the entire Australia. Holmesglen is also popular for TAFE courses. It's not in the heart of Melbourne City like some other higher institutions such as RMIT and so you should be able to get cheaper accommodation. If you are coming on a student visa then you should be ready to do some work to support yourself. I like Holmesglen because many students there are working class and so you should not find it hard to get a job if you can relate very well. Wishing you all the best 1 Like |

majiouk2002: I have already mentioned one of them in my post here https://www.nairaland.com/4107449/living-australia-life-australian-immigrant/14#62291314 It's quite expensive though.. about 800 AUD. But one can make a deposit of about $200 while the balance is gradually deducted from your paycheck. Their website is https://www.oncall.com.au/ndis-folder/ndisjobready There's another one at http://www.yooralla.com.au. Was told that you don't pay for this particular training and it's also for 4 days as well. Don't know much about this though. The downside with doing a short course is that it's not recognised across board. You can only work with the agency that trained you. 1 Like 1 Share |

catchdwind4rmkd: Good morning Bro, I really need to contact you now as I said before. I would have asked my questions here but because some of them are very personal, I may not want to derail the thread. I'll send you a PM when you reply it's ok to do so. Thanks. |
Re: Living In Australia/life As An Australian Immigrant by catchdwind4rmkd(m): 12:09pm On Mar 01, 2018 |
Hi, I'd rather you ask your questions here unless they directly affect your privacy. Most comments, posts and questions here are personal as well but others have benefited from the responses to those supposed personal questions. There have been many testimonies from people who haven't had any previous post on the thread but managed to get their visas by merely reading posts, comments and responses to questions asked by others. Again, feel free to contact me directly only if it affects your privacy, else post your questions on the right thread, noting this thread is mainly for Life in Oz. The snag with asking questions in private is that you may receive wrong answers with no second or counter opinion from others which may have dire consequences. gcey2k: 3 Likes 2 Shares |
