Oghenekaro Etebo's Spain adventure adds to Rohr's headache

Colin Udoh, KweséESPN

ESPN.com | 10:17 AM WAT

Barring any unfortunate, last-minute training-ground injury, Oghenekaro Etebo should be in the Las Palmas starting eleven to face Barcelona and Lionel Messi on Thursday.

Since joining the club at the tail end of the winter transfer window, Etebo has featured in all four of his new club's games, notably stealing the show on his debut, a 1-0 victory over Malaga.

Having moved from Feirense in Portugal, Etebo is having to contend with a step up in class ahead of the World Cup, but so far, he appears to be coping well.

Between now and June, he will likely have to face teams of the calibre of Celta Vigo, Villarreal, Deportivo La Coruna and giants Real Madrid, which should offer him excellent preparation ahead of the world-class opponents he'll encounter with Nigeria this summer.

The 22-year-old Nigerian should get a chance to compete against the likes of Messi, Ever Banega, Ivan Rakitic, Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic and others ahead of meeting them in Russia.

However, it could all have been so different.

Then things went ominously quiet.

Suddenly phone calls were not being returned, messages went unattended, and within the blink of an eye, he had joined Las Palmas on a three-month loan deal.

Even some of his advisers were stunned by the turn and direction of events, with one describing it as a 'strange situation' considering the difference in fortunes of both clubs

In hindsight, it looks likely that Feirense didn't want to completely let go of their exciting young talent, and may rather prefer to cash-in post-World Cup.

So far, the deal appears to be working out perfectly for Etebo.

Not only does he get a chance to play against some of the world's top players, honing his craft along the way, but he is not under the same pressure as some if his teammates who would go down with the team in the event that Las Palmas are relegated.

The move may also prompt Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr to reconsider his first-choice midfield options, with the trio of captain John Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi and Wilfred Ndidi looking likely to be his first-choice three in Russia.

Etebo may be only a back-up for now, but he will at least travel to the World Cup as an invaluable back-up option, considering his versatility, energy and dynamism.

That means he can cover for any of the starting three in midfield, as an anchorman, a more mobile retriever, or as an advanced, more attacking player, supporting the forwards.

There are still some rough edges about his play, several of which were exposed when the Super Eagles crumbled to South Africa last year, but playing regularly against quality opposition in one of the top three leagues in the world will help iron out those kinks.

Expect Etebo's stay in Spain, even if it may ultimately be brief, to put him in a position to mount a credible challenge to Ndidi and Onazi's starting spots, while Mikel may also be looking over his shoulder.

If he continues with his strong recent performances, Rohr may yet have a big decision to make.

It will be good if he start from the bench, onazi is not making trabzonspor starting line up this days, trabzonspor is not up to a average team, even stoke city has better players than trabzonspor, that says a lot,but who am I to say that? Gernot rohr will decide
You don't have to be Rohr to opine on what you think is right for the team, bro.

But has anybody ever had a nightmare in the night that later ended as a sweet dream? I doubt

Its like you people haven't learned anything.... All the hardwork done by Pinnick, all the labor of the players during the qualifiers, every hope we have had on this team,... These are all what you will see vaporize before your very eyes when you put Akpeyi in goal at the world cup. Every shot, every nodding will be a goal.. The only ball he will be able to keep out in the GWG is a back pass... Even dat one too na prayer! embarassed

Maybe you like to endure pain, maybe you like to have an open disgrace but not me

I would take either an Ezenwa, Uzoho or Alampasu in goal any time anyday at the world cup than Akpeyi heck! I will even be comfortable with rookie Maduka Okoye than Akpeyi.

Akpeyi should be left out of the Super Eagles to go sort out his physiological issues, else playing him further would make his case worse, he will keep posting below par performance, and he will end up ridiculed, he will be dejected and his self-esteem will plunge further.

Save the poor man now and end his misery!

Issue is, we have two Ajiboyes already (Ezenwa and himself) so except we drop Ezenwa for him, I don't think it makes sense picking two acrobatic GKs with same attributes when we can mix it up.

One traditional GK
One acrobatic Gk
And one mixed GK

To me, barring any new name, I will stick to Akpeyi, Ezenwa and Uzoho except if any of the other 3 prove beyond doubt that they are better than these 3.

Mickael2:

that is the way it is. In the GK department all that is required is your ability to pull off top saves and your ability to distribute the ball well. Just because we said Maduka is playing for the U18 does not mean he is playing against the best U18s in Germany, if you are good as an U18 you go straight to the first team, he is playing against people who are still learning the drill, strikers who can barely make clean contact with the ball, if you ask me I'd rather take Ajiboye that atleast faces fierce drives from a 40-year old Rabiu Alli without blinking. Then you have Uzoho who is almost in the same dilemma, division Three, as in division one, two and three, that says it all.

Ezenwa Returns To Training After Injury Setback, Thankful To God
By Bamidele Boluwaji

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, is back to training after the injury he sustained during the 2018 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Ezenwa who captained Nigeria to the tournament got injured in the semi-final against Sudan and could not be part of the final match against host nation Morocco which the home-based Super Eagles lost 4-0.

The FC Ifeanyi Ubah first choice goalkeeper posted a message on his facebook wall in the early hours of Thursday, thanking God for healing him, and also thankful to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the support given to him during his trying time.

“Special thanks to God almighty for healing me, Ezenwa is back to the field of play with joy,” the Super Eagles goalkeeper stated.

“And also thanks to my beloved fans all over the world for their prayers and concern they showed to me during the recovery process. God bless you all and I love you all.
“️️ also thanks to the NFF for their care and support throughout my stay in Abuja. God bless them.”

Ezenwa’s return will serve as a big boost to the Super Eagles
preparation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Nigeria will play both Poland and Serbia in international friendly games this month as part of the preparations towards the World Cup in Russia.

This best describe types of GKs.

Kog45:
Pls what is ttraditional goalkeeper?

Traditional goalkeepers are well balanced, normal goal keepers. They only dive when it’s necessary and most of the times they use both of their hands for holding the ball. Acrobatic goalkeepers are more acrobatic. That is they dive really well and have excellent reflexes. They have more chances in stopping ground shots and shots aimed at corners. But they won't hold onto the ball that often since they pull off one handed saves most of the times. They usually palm the ball away which allows the oppsition for a rebound shot.

Traditional GKs, they are well balanced, has fair overall in reflexes and diving and holds onto the ball more often since they pull off two handed saves most of the times.

Some examples for traditional goalkeepers are Petr Cech, Manuel Neur, Gianluigi Buffon etc. Joe Hart, Fraser Forster,Hugo Lloris etc would be the examples for acrobatic goalkeepers.

Ezenwa and Ajiboye are both acrobatic.

Akpeyi and Uzoho are more of traditional.

Having seen much of Alampasu since he became professional to tag him.

Ederson and Ste ter gen are mixed.

you see why...you always have my respect.
your knowledge of this round leather game is top notch....

sir...I will still advise uzoho to still remain in deportivo reason because he still has much to learn and moreover his team is in top 3 in Spanish division 3 meaning there is the possibility of promotion for his team...

I believe if he should play good football in Spanish division 2 he may get noticed by a good club not just in Spain may be elsewhere in Europe....he still young and there is still much he needs to learn.

and regarding alampasu....he should seek for a move elsewhere....probably in Europe or go for a loan may be wit a Nigeria club side....

I still believe right there in nigeria league we have good goal keepers....alloy agu and co have not really done their homework well...

I believe if we can get the likes of enyeama from the local league likewise we can get other good goalies too.....they abound...
all the managers need do...is to search with an unbiased mind.
I think a good performance at WC would shape our keepers especially number one,so keeper like Uzoho can even move to a better club as number one

Balogun Keen On New Mainz Contract Before World Cup
By Adeboye Amosu

Nigeria defender Leon Balogun hopes to sort oit his future with German club FSV Mainz before start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Balogun joined Mainz from another Bundesliga outfit Darmstadt 98 on a three-year deal in the summer of 2015 and has established himself as a key member of the side.

He has established himself on the international scene with Nigeria and will be one of the key men for the Super Eagles in Russia.
A good performance at the Mundial could open up another opportunity for the big centre-back to move to another club but he is not prepared to wait until the end of the global soccer fiesta to sort out his future.

“I want to have clarity in any case first. I’m going to be 30 years old in the summer, so it would be ideal to clarify my future before the tournament,” Balogun stated in an interview with German online news outlet t-online.de

“I am already in talks with those responsible here in Mainz and can definitely imagine staying.”
Balogun has previously featured for German clubs Hannover 98, Werder Bremen and Fortuna Dusserdolf.

Nigeria's Rivals To Receive N18M Per Minute If Messi Plays In Final Pre-World Cup Friendly

The Argentina Football Association will pocket three million dollars (equivalent of N1.1 billion) for agreeing to face Israel in their final pre-World Cup friendly, but only on one condition.

According to Sport Express Russia, the conditions of the friendly match of the Argentina national team in Israel , which will be held on June 9, have been determined.

The Argentina Football Association will receive US$3 million on the proviso that Barcelona number ten Lionel Messi will spend at least sixty minutes on the pitch.

Therefore, AFA will be paid $50,000 (around N18 million) for every minute their captain is on the pitch when they visit Israel.

Manager Jorge Sampaoli will announce his roster for the friendly games against Italy and Spain on Thursday, March 1, six days before Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr releases his roster for the Pre-World Cup friendlies against Poland and Serbia.

Lionel Messi was excused from Argentina's 4-2 loss to Nigeria in a friendly last November.

Sir Tee...... Alampasu is no longer a Rookie, he's a Professional and an official 3rd GK for a Portuguese Primeira League Club.

The 2nd GK of the same Club has not played even for a second in the League this Season, rather he's featuring in the Cup Games.

Alampasu is the youngest amongst the Trio, he's 21 and still learning the Game. Thus being part of the first Team ain't Moinmoin and as well a huge Advantage for him over Maduka. He's training with Men, not Kids.

Perhaps Ahmed Musa should have kept honing his Skills at the Leicester U21 Team instead of his loan Move to CSKA Moscow Sir?! Or Iheanacho should have asked for playing Opportunities at the U21 Team instead of warming the Bench?!

There is no way you can compare Training Sessions of the U18 Team with the first Team Sir. Alampasu is professionally getting drilled, while Maduka is academically getting drilled.

Uzoho was the third choice for Depor.. He is still a rookie

Martinez is the third choice for Arsenal, he is still a rookie.

The difference with this two is that they are still playing games for the youth teams and reserve sides.

Musa was playing with the under 23 instead of staying idle. Rohr specifically asked Leicester to allow Musa play for the under 23s instead of being idle.

Only on Mikel and this fast counter attack talk....

You saw the fast/Super quick passing that led to the Super Eagles' third goal against Argentina abi? You know it was from Ndidi to Iheanacho then to Mikel who found Iwobi, who then found Iheanacho (again) before his last touch rolled into Idowu's path....

Just take a look at that movement. Free flowing quick counter attacking football and it was not just about the movement but about letting the ball do the running too. IT WAS ABOUT THE QUICK PASSING EXCHANGES.

Mikel don't have to run much during a counter attack... All he needs to do is quickly release the ball into the Path OR feet of his younger attacking team mates like Iwobi, Moses, Nacho etc... Mikel is the orchestrator and for him, his role in this team's attacking style is not about his running but about his quick creative passing.

Another example is his quick creative pass to Ighalo to set him on the run for that first goal against Cameroun. Mikel didn't even have to turn and look at Ighalo. He already knew where he was. That is the quickness and speed I speak of. Speed in his brains and not in his feet.

Mikel's genius is key in this system and he has been at the center of it all when Nigeria blew teams away with the system so why semd him to the DM role? undecided Why send our most intelligent and most creative midfield genius to the DM role? Unless you want him to operate as a regista akin to Pirlo? A deep-lying playmaker with a box-to-box partner and then with another partner in the CM role? Well unless that, biko hapu Mikel as the team's CAM... Having him there makes our attacking third delightful to watch and even more fearsome to contain.

My brother, you have spoken well. Mikel is the best AM present in the team currently. His ability to produce deadly balls in attack is undisputably outstanding among all our personnel that occupy, the midfield position. He is not a fast player but his ability to hold possession and dispense threatening final balls to the forwards is very vital for our AM position.

This in turn prevents the forwards of being starved of the ball and boost their confidence when he's with the ball.

Did you factor in the defenders of then and the ones we have now? Apart from the Argentine game which was a total shut down from him, wouldn't blame the other ones on him.

If it's by that, you know the amount of goals Ezenwa shipped in during the Wafu tourney in Ghana.

You said he's better with PKs, which PK did he keep out for us? Which one was conceded while he kept for us?

against Egypt, Algeria and every other time I have watch him play...he always concede goals.....
in that context ezenwa comes too.....but poor in penalties...

One PK? Hmm not enough to rate him on.

To say Akpeyi is only better than Ezenwa in the area of PK sounds strange.

All the same, let the friendlies come so we see who's prepared among them.
Humility017:

I think one i could remember against south Africa....may be because he has not really been exposed to penalties like ezenwa...

ezenwa response on penalties from matches I have watched does not look convincing
