Hate or love this guy he is one Nigerian with broad support and influence across the country. He is one of the very few nationalist and truly detribalised Nigerian leaders we have left. Frankly baba will go to Kano and receive a rousing welcome, same in Enugu, same in Jos, makurdi, Lagos... everywhere. No other Nigerian leader can boasts of this clout. Even in the conservative core North, who don't align easily with persons outside their circle of elite, he is referred to as "Baba", a sign of respect, and spoken about with reverence. The man is a national institution, an icon.

Negative
One cannot but observe his penchant for pushing through his agenda whether or not it sits well with people. In short he plays God all too often and he can fight dirty to push his agenda. His memory is longer than an elephant. Step on his toes, baba will crush you to dust. GEJ once confessed; ignore OBJ at your peril


Summary
Having summarised his good and bad sides, I conclude by saying OBJ is the greatest living Nigerian now; good or bad. One part of me doesn't like him, a greater part of me holds him with like and respect and a type of fondness reserved for a favourite uncle.

That's because he became an officer around the time the Nigerian army was being 'nigerianised' in preparation for independence..hence the rapid promotion.

Add the causalities from the January and July 1966 coups...which made promotions for some proceed a bit faster.

On a more honest note, you tried on african leadership by knowing how to make african leaders do your bidding which was mostly peace issues; had you been followed by an infrastructural, economic, and military minded successor, it would have helped your legacy but you played politics or should I say choose politics over nation. You tried but you failed on assassinations that occurred during your leadership; no power supply; armed robberies on a wide scale; looting; no leadership on curbing cultism in universities; lack of cooperation with you and governors, senators, and even your VP; etc and I can't really give you phone success because it was already coming; I will give you technology(satellite), agriculture(obsanjo chicken), a little bit on the economy (some projects going on, civil servant mostly paid, an uptrending productivity, and surplus in the foreign reserve). You should have helped democracy well if you supported(not choose or lord) a better candidate.
