I completely agree with you....in addition some customs agents here have been advertising"Tincan customs duty papers for Cotonou vehicles".
This is a scam...even the customs agent who helped me get my car from Cotonou in 2014 when the land borders were still open, confirmed to me on phone & even in his thread here on Nairaland that - there is nothing like Tincan papers for Cotonou vehicles now.
You can search for his moniker on Nairaland - @saintjoel or JELAD Ltd (his business name) - he is a very sincere & trustworthy customs agent unlike many here on Nairaland.
I vehemently and strongly disagree with the bolded. You will get yourself in trouble if you continue this way.

Please note, this thread is not to pull down anyone or anybody's business.

'Some' cars on Nairaland, not 'all' cars on Nairaland.

For many years, we blame our leaders, our government, politicians that they are thieves, corrupt, they are liars and so on.

But have we checked ourselves?

Are we in any way better?

If given the chance to hold their offices, are we not going to do worse?

Where we are now, our homes, streets, offices, little businesses we doing, how do we deal with our clients, our partners, colleagues, neighbors, friends, relatives and so on

Have we been fair enough, have been transparent or honest enough

As a car dealer, i think your clients have the right to know about everything you know about the car you're selling to them.

Some of these cars were posted here on Nairaland accident free untill some guys started running the lot number/VIN

Most time, some dealers claim clean title cars are too expensive, that's why they go for cars with minor crashes.

I agree, clean title cars are expensive, but some of these dealers will still brand the accidented cars to be accident free cars, selling it thesame price with clean title.

Imagine a seriouly wrecked 2007 camry SE going for 3.4m, maybe asking price.

Sometimes is not about the money or price, but the disclosure, the transparency, let your customers no what they're buying.

If you tell them and don't buy, others will buy.

Minor accidents or major accidents, tell your clients.

Then, some of these dealers on Nairaland are middle men/salesmen, they advertise and sell cars for people without knowing much about the history of what they're posting or selling.

You have a name to protect.

Three years ago my brother was a victim, bought a Toks 2009 camry XLE from a dealership in Akure, 3.1m

3months later car started showing itself, today not engine starting, tomorrow A.C. not working, next tomorrow power steering, next oil leakage, overheating, fuel pump, next braking system, or wiring problems, just within 10months of purchase.

They were working on the electronics one day when one of the tech guys run the VIN, you wont believe the history.

The accident must have claimed lives, it was non-repairable.

But maybe with magic they repaired and my brother bought it.

We went back to the dealer to ask him about the history.

He was still claiming accident free until we show him the pictures, he started giving excuses that it was a mistake.

But thank God today, he has nothing on his stand.

My bro used the car for 1 year and about 3months, sold it to his mechanic for 900k

The present condition of a car is important, as long as it's working fine, but the history is important as well.

Please disclose history of your cars to your buyers, customers right from Nairaland.

Not until they come for physical inspection, like one of the posters of these cars said yesterday.

You didn't disclose the history here, but you will disclose the accident the car involved when buyers come for physical inspection, when you're smelling money, that's when you will now tell them that the cars had accidents and show them the pictures.

This is a 2014 Honda Accord going for over 5m here on Nairaland.

Imagine you're buying this honda and the dealer is just showing you the picture of the accident at point of payment

These cars are still up for sale

I advice buyers to always ask for VIN and run it before any negotiation, if they're ok with the history, go for it.

And if the damage on the history check is too extreme, you walk away.

God bless you my brother at least for not keeping quiet. Many people know this things but decide to keep quiet and let this unscrupulous elements cheat people of their hard-earned money. If we all expose the cheats among us I'm very sure Nigeria will be better than what we are experiencing now. Most of us lamenting and complaining about our politicians are worse than these politicians. PLEASE CAN YOU OUTLINE HOW ONE CAN CHECK THE STATUS OF A VEHICLE OR IS THERE A WEBSITE FOR THAT PURPOSE? GOD BLESS YOU ONCE MORE

1st thiing you do is google that make and find location of the VIN, once you know it, go to the car snap the VIN and do physical check, go away and run a VIN check, then the true situation will come to light then make a deccission on waht you see.
As a novice I need more enlightenment on this sir. thanks

So bros, cos you bought a clean title car and yet Nigerians refused to buy it, rather they prefer the cheaper accidented ones, you pass the verdict that the fellow car dealers are your problem and reasons for not selling??

A very simple solution staring you in the face, yet u ignore it cos u want to follow the popular bandwagon route of blaming dealers for every thing, even a missing spare bolt.

All of them typing all these holy things here on this thread will still not buy your Clean title car, if you like supply VIN or more, they'll rather buy accidented or they'll price your Clean title car for same or even lower than accidented ones, yet u keep blaming the dealers, if you are serious for biz u won't put yourself in a situation where you'll have to tie down your money for 8 months for a meagre 150k profit.

Do the maths!!

As for you, Oga Volvo, I no go even bother check. Make who wan see go see. I already know what I would discover.

Then there was the case I've dubbed

'The Curious Case Of The Vanishing Miles'

In this case, the vehicle lost hundreds of thousands of miles of mileage between the US and its arrival for sale in Lagos. Remains a true mystery.
That's not even to mention its accidented status and the anger of the seller at being exposed.
i still don't know how dealers tamper the mileage of imported vehicles and how can one know the ones that are being tampered?

The poster of these cars below is one the dealers here on nairaland that's doing the necessary, i like checking his adverts.

Some of his cars have crashed(minor), but he gives details in pictures right from the point of purchase, foreign soil to the stand here in Nigeria.

Some nairalanders even commends him.

From ordinary bumper crash to broken head lamps, side mirrors or anything replaced.

Disclose every detail to your buyers.

I wish Nairaland and Mods can make it compulsory for car sellers here to always post the VIN of the cars they're selling.
is it true VIN are manipulated sometimes?

Selling a car based on false info is really bad. And there is no excuse for that.

as a buyer, you have the right to request vin of what you are buying and run checks on the history. a lot of guides on steps to buy a car are availble on and off nairaland.

you can use the results of your checks as a bargaining chip to get better prices off the seller.

most buyers are unaware and ignorant of this, they just buy flashy cars. You know most people buying cars are always in a rush and their body will be shaking and they will eventually fall for flooded and accidental care.

computerglobal can check the VIN of a vehicle for a few thousands Here on nairaland.

I just want to lend my voice to this. We've had this discussion in the past and it's good we address it again. I'm going to speak solely from my personal point of view.

When I got into car business, I was initially into strictly clean title cars. Unfortunately, the prices were usually on the high side and I know the no of times I was called a thief on nl here cos of the huge difference in prices. As much as I tried to make a lot of people understand, it fell on deaf ears. Most of those cars stayed on ground for a long while before being sold, and some were sold at below landing cost. Most of my partners got discouraged and refused to ship in vehicles anymore. One thing I can say from experience here,is that the percentage of people who are ready to, and can afford clean title cars on this site, are not even up to 4% of the numerous potential clients we have here.

Most potential buyers always look for cars at ridiculous prices. You see people whose budget can only afford a car of 1.5m,coming to price a car of 3m. As much as 90% of the cars that are shipped in,are bought on auction and on auction, prices are not fixed. The era where dealers were making huge profits on cars, has gone. There are too many cars on in Lagos now and to the best of my knowledge, most dealers I know, sell to break even. If you find that some cars are quite expensive, it could be that the landing cost, are quite high.
I know that there are dealers who import terribly accidented vehicles and I've had cause to quarrel with some of them.
Sometimes, I also post cars with salvage history and that's cos I have a lot of friends and dealers who push their cars to me,to help them sell. I do not have issues providing vin on request. But let us be clear on something. The fact that a car has a mild damage and is classified as salvage, doesn't make it automatically cheap at the auction. At the end of the day,we're not perfect in business but can only strive to attain it.

You seem to be one of the relatively transparent ones here, along with calculusx and a few others. I’m glad you understand that nobody’s asking you not to sell accidented vehicles, but just to disclose the history to the buyer. Your input is appreciated.
