I LOVE DRILLING ENGINEERING,MUD ENGINEERING,PRODUCTION ENGINEERING But am still awaiting a good job,
@ Dr Ferlie
PLEASE I ENCOURAGE YOU TO GET CERT TO OPERATE THIS DRILLING SCHOOL YOU PLAN TO I ASSURE YOU,YOUNG ENGINEERING GRADUATES WOULD BE PROUD OF YOU, I KNOW OF PLENTY PET GRADUATES LOOKING FOR PLACES TO RAPIDLY IMPROVE ON THEIR KNOWLEDE.I have good knowledge of drilling and i am good in calculations of torsional strengths, collapse and burst in selecting drill pipe. i saw your writeup on selecting drill pipes for a well.
@ ALL
[b]MEANWHILE THERE IS A SCHOOL IN PORTHARCOURT UNIPORT, CALLED INSTITUTE OF PETROLEUM STUDIES WERE YOU CAN LEARN MUD ENGINEERING AND ADVANCED DRILLING ENGINEERING FOR LIKE A MONTH, THERE IS ALSO A SCHOOL RUN BY LASER ENGINEERING WERE YOU CAN LEARN VARIOUS SOFTWARES LIKE PETREL,GEOGRAPHIX,PROSPER,MBAL ETSC STILL IN PORT HARCOURT ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS JUST GOOGLE LASER ENGINEERING OR INSTITUTE OF PETROLEUM STUDIES AND CHECK FOR SHORT COURSES.

It is very sad.
I learnt that and I quote 'The rig had apparently just finished cementing steel casing in place at depths exceeding 18,000 ft. The next operation was to suspend the well so that the rig could move to its next drilling location, the idea being that a rig would return to this well later in order to complete the work necessary to bring the well into production.
It is thought that somehow formation fluids – oil /gas – got into the wellbore and were undetected until it was too late to take action– got into the wellbore and were undetected until it was too late to take action'

Who would ever think that an already cased hole could cause so much damage? BOP failure? Cheii!!!
BP is in a big mess, I can only imagin the hundreds of lawsuits that await her.

I have tried to attach some pictures of the event but failed, I guess it is too large

@ Dr Felie,

The one prayer that kept coming to my mind when I did my HUET training was 'God do not make me to ever need this training' i.e nothing should ever go wrong!
Re: Subsea, Mud, Reservoir, Pipeline, Petroleum, Drilling Engineers & Supervisors Zone by Remii(m): 4:46pm On May 05, 2010
@Dr Felie, w e would soon know what happened, because those who should know made it out of the rig, Companymen, Toolpusher, Halliburton cementers etc. infact lots of info on the internet already in Rigzone, and drillers dot com.
@Shinatu, yes, They were plugging and abandoning a well after setting the first plug, with the riser displaced to sea water, as soon as they ope the BOP ram to pull to the next setting depth, a kick that was under he BOP got in to the riser and blow out . In deepwater, once a kick is above your riser the hope of control is limited because the diverter is not designed to hold more than 500 psi. it just to divert flow as the names implies. You can have formation fluid in the wellbore unknowingly thru swabbing or negative testing without incompetent integrity behind casing. If kick was gas according to gas law volume would have increased tremedously before getting to surface and the result is always catastrophic.
The accident would stir up alot of mess not for BP alone but the whole industry especially that it occurred in an area with one of the highest compliance regulators.

Hi Dr ferlie,
Thanks for your kind words of encouragements to young engineers, I spoke to dr Charles pepple of Sld Mud School on phone and he told me his school is running a joint program with IPS uniport and that they dont guarantee jobs. However, he stated that if one does excellent they would be able to assist. Please i need advise whether to go in for this course in order to penetrate the industry and build my career as a drilling engineer which i actually have a huge passion for, I feel a little confused as to after spending 350k for the training wat next? Please advise,
Thanks

thanks Dr. Ferlie for this discussion.
Actual am a guy with 6-7 yrs working experience as a reservoir simulation engineer (both 4 operators & servicing); but i no longer finds it challenging as i thought.
am currently thinking of the next step to go either Production or drilling. as 4 production, i have done similar job b4. so am only left with drilling.
how do i start, is it to go to the drilling school or i dont know i need advice from any experienced guy in the section.
thanks

Sir, I must say i am inspired by this forum. I am Petroleum Engineering graduate with valid wellCAP IADC certification which i obtained from International Petroleum Center, Abu Dhabi and i also has a valid OSHA construction safety certification 29CFR 1926 from Al quais, Dubai.

Please what is next as i want to work as a drilling engr in Nigeria. I have sent my CVs to all the companies i can remember but hv'nt got any response yet. Please am i missing something or is it because i don't have a field experience yet?

I will appreciate any advice.

Hi All,

Good work by Dr Ferlie, Shinatu et al

I bring in subsea engr, project mgt and most recently drilling engr expericience to the forum

I can particularly assist with information for petroleum engineering education opportunities in US, Canada, UK, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Saudi etc, ofcourse it all depends on your current level of experience and educational background will determine which route i suggest to you

For professionals, any of you worked in south america or asia and want to share your experience?

I know little about getting jobs in nigeria, so may not be able to help much in that regards

Keep on drilling

I am loving this thread.I have a background in civil engineering and would like to take the drilling engr. route.please can you advise me on the school to attend that are cheaper for example in denmark, etc.
Re: Subsea, Mud, Reservoir, Pipeline, Petroleum, Drilling Engineers & Supervisors Zone by oludunamis(m): 9:46pm On Sep 11, 2010
@ugobanks
Google miskolc university in Hungary, you can find a god program in petr engr with an option in drilling.

If you can get into clausthal university in germany, your fees will be negligible, there program is not bad either

@ others:

If you have a sound undergrad in engineering, why not consider studying GRE and TOEFL and applying to US univ in pet egr, if you make top score in thse exams you may land yourself full sponsorship.

I am keen to enlighten as many as wish to further their eduction in pet engr on ways to go about it, i can give you top tips and ideas for schools in most continents, if one person benefits from that information then, am happy

@ oludunamis, GOD bless u my brother
please keep it up, ur information is really accurate and true, i know because i got an admission to both hungary and clausthal zellerfeld in germany to read masters in petroleum engineering but i couldn,t make it because i couldn't pay 1.7 million naira in to a german account b4 i can be issued a student visa cry

its very painfull, as i am writing this i still ve my admission letter dated august 2007,

anyway i ve gotten over that now , i am only interested in doing cerrtificate courses in oil related programs

Dr. Ferlie,
You are really doing a great job and I must first appreciate that.
Please I'm a geology graduate from OOU and I also with HSE LEVEL 3 certificate from NISP. I need advice on how I can build a career in the oil and has sector. Do I have to run other professional programmes to at least get a job. If I have to, where can I get such in Port Harcourt. I will very much appreciate your quick response. Thanks. My email is mtdauda@hotmail.com

Hello Everyone, am so grateful for this thread.

I am a Mechanical Engr and joined one of the indigenous oil firms with the hope of developing a career in drilling engineering with them, but have ended up in project management.

I have since been making plans of how to lunch back into the Drilling Engineering line but am afraid that my plans iis based on too little practical experience thus I may not easily get a job.

The plan initially was to save up about N5 million and head to robert Gordon or Herriot Watt for a masters program, with the hope of landing a good job once am out. Please any body who know should tell me how feasible it is to get a job as a drilling engineer with Masters in Drill Engineering but little experience.

Although I have been saving for the masters program, it is not really easy and may take a lot of my time, am increasingly getting bored by my job, So am also considering schools that will cost a little less like clausthal university. Please I know the level of recognition for these schools is less than that for RGU or Herriot Watt, do you think it will greatly affect ones prospect of getting a job after the program.

I am so much concerned about the job aspect cause am considering the possibility of taking a loan to make up my fees and cost of living. On the other hand I am also trying to make up 3 yrs in my current work place so I can go on study leave.

Please oludunamis do I need to speak german to study at clausthal university or Hungary, are there other schools one should consider.
Thanks
