Mynd44, I know you were making an example with the nuclear physics and igala yeah, but in that same line, how would the next nuclear physicist be properly trained to world recognition when the books which should train him best, the words and Dynamics are in English? Can we define equilibrium or thermodynamic in ibibio or kanuri? In essence it may be great for our culture but detrimental on a wider scale and it's insistence most in public school would widen that academical gap already between the private and public schools
How Do the Chinese, Germans ,Arabs etc learn those terms? 2 Likes |

is a welcomed development, but this might affect west on the long run. I was shocked that most northerns don't hear nor speak English in abuja. kaduna is the worst self, I had to get an interpreter. 3 Likes |

electron:People are just making mountains out of heaps of sands. The alternative use of Yoruba to learn subject is not compulsory, it is for students who find it difficult to get it in English. What were should aspire for are more things like this, Econonics, Commerce and Accounting textbooks shoukd be translated into Igbo for the benefit of the traders who dont get English but have a business to grow. 1 Like |

That will not help much really. Try translating and teaching Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics in Yoruba. Now, that will be an achievement where kids dont have to learn another language but go straight to what's important. Numbers. |

Mynd44: That was Professor Fafunwa's policy when he was minister of education in the 1980s, but there was enormous opposition to the policy and the opponents practically killed it. His policy was that kids should be taught in their mother tongue until they got to primary 3. The compromise that was reached was that every child must learn at least one Nigerian language. 2 Likes |

Nigeriabiafra80:Blame your ethnic group if you can't sing the national anthem in your native language. For your info, this is not a new development in Yoruba land. Way back in the 80s, I sang the national anthem in Yoruba, in the primary school I attended. Ambode is only trying to resuscitate and sustain the tradition. That's why we are proudly Yorubas. We have a culture and identity which must be conserved. Anyone who feels aggrieved can kindly relocate his wards back to his village for schooling. If I was in Kano or Enugu, I'd expect my wards to learn Hausa or Igbo. Failure to do so will amount to a waste of my investment on him or her. My child will naturally pick Yoruba language at home. Ability to speak one other major language in Nigeria other than one's mother tongue, is a big advantage. So, Ambode should actually be appreciated by all these ignorant and ethnocentric critics. 20 Likes |

Esseite:Honestly you have no point. China, Russia, Brazil, Finland, Germany, Dubai, Holland, France and a host of others teach their children in their native languages yet they are one of the most advanced countries in the world. Language is a means of communication not a platform for retrogression. How the hell does cultism even appears in the disadvantages of teaching in native language. Please stop saying stuffs like this, it is not very smart. 21 Likes |

emmasege:Exactly in the 80s and 90s, Wednesday was our Yoruba speaking day. In Mayflower were I attended, even Assembly was conducted in Yoruba on Wednesdays, speeches by SS3 student on Wednesday was in Yoruba. Guess what I had an A2 in both Yoruba and English Language, I passed English because I understood Yoruba better. I have known the national anthem and pledge in Yoruba since 1991 when I was in JSS1. We all know the kind of success Mayflower churned out year in year out. Ambode has done nothing new or special. All the Hausa and Igbo student in my school passed Yoruba glowingly. 20 Likes 1 Share |

Esseite: Chinese engineers that designed your tecno phones and other chinko products are not taught in English and most of them don't even speak it. Yet they deliver their best in science and technology. North korea is not an English speaking nation. Every korean citizen is taught in korean language. With science in their language, they built a nuclear weapon with which they threaten Americans daily. Stop being a slave to English. If not for colonial mentality we won't speak English. Many countries of the world don't speak English and they are far ahead of Nigeria. German chancellor Angela merkel doesn't speak English, yet she's the leader of a nation that produces one of the best luxury cars in the world. Mercedes Benz 18 Likes 2 Shares |

To be honest i have no issue with that nothing wri g trying to promote your cultursl vslue any one not unhappy can seek alternative avenue. If China, Japan, Germany, Russia, France, Spain etc refused to take other language except their own traditional language so if Lagos chose to its no big deal. During my days in Russia its compulsory to undergo a year Russia language course before proceeding with our courses so same way if Lagos chose same path it's no big deal if the East or the North like they follow same trend. To me I love it. 8 Likes |
