..........Orders articulated vehicle owners to vacate bridges by Thursday

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday ordered drivers of articulated and other heavy-duty trucks to vacate the Carter Bridge and other overpass in Lagos with effect from Thursday.

There were claims that the bridges may buckle under the weight of the articulated trucks and these may have forced the army to swing into action and prevent a major disaster in the nation’s economic and commercial capital.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) had last year warned that the gridlocks created by trucks on the bridges were dangerous and had damaging effects on the overpass.

The movement of the trucks to the bridges followed the state government’s directive to owners and operators of articulated vehicles, trailers, and petroleum tankers to stay away from Apapa and its environs until it finds a lasting solution to the unending traffic bottleneck in the city.

Whatever needs to be done to avoid loss of life is welcome, the police and traffic officers are being undermined by those truck drivers, it's an everyday experience for private drivers, commuters and pedestrians.

No sir, there should be a limit to how we debase our institutions. The job of the military is to defend the territorial integrity of the country, and not menial jobs that infringes on the duty of others.

They can fill in were other authorities are slacking, they can be firefighters, rescuers, minders, medical outreaches and emergency even construction as it

They are multi tasked to keep the country running outside defence and attack core military assignments.

Government have not been serious about removing them. What they have so far done is blackmail government with strike and government quickly back off. I have never heard of these drivers VIOLENTLY confronting police.

When government is ready to remove them, they will ask the police to go out there and dislodge them.

Until then, they should stop this attempt at trying to use the military to INTIMIDATE.

Police armed with teargas will achieve this without any issue.

It is about to get even worse. Can't stay in the port. Can't stay on the bridge and no option provided. Definitely will park somewhere but not to the good of traffic

That is not within the power of the Nigerian Army.

We have to follow the law. The military has no affairs with civil law and cannot initiate or enforce laws unless specifically from the President or Minister of Defence.

So no, the Army cannot ban trucks on a bridge. The most that can happen is the state government asks the Ministry of Defence to send the Army to help enforce the rules.
