Nice one, some of Nigerian graduates didn't let school pass through them, which is pitiable. making them unemployable cos they only go about with mere certificate.

All points are valid. The need for high IQ, emotional intelligence, adding value, and professional mannerism is key forevery Nigerian youth to excel.

JARUSHUB:
3. Professional mannerisms

Mannerisms are also important.
The composure and behaviours demonstrated by people creates an impression in others’ minds.
Two sayings come to mind:

– First impressions count.
– You are what you are perceived to be.
Nigerian graduates need to develop their professional manners and attitudes at work. I have heard of a Big 4 secondee from Nigeria to the UK office using the phone to make private international calls to Nigeria and talking loudly in the office while doing it. The office is not your home and a place to play. Dress smart or appropriate for the culture, speak eloquently and professionally at all times, do your work to the highest standard within the constraints of the available resources to you and do not take the piss.

4. Adding value & justifying your pay

One of the hidden weaknesses of majority of Nigerian graduates is the mentality. Many think they should be paid “plenty moni” in Ghana-must-go bags because of some qualifications they have gotten, or because they have heard of what some other guy is earning, without any thought about what value the can add to a company. Even when offered the job, they come to work every day and go through the paces without any evidence of adding extra-ordinary value and then think their pay needs to be upgraded periodically.

If you cannot give NXm to someone who you cannot see a matching result of their work, why do you expect a shareholder to pay you an amount of money that you cannot justify you are more than worth? Graduates should be willing to start from, at least, a reasonable base and gain some more knowledge and skills in their career field. A reasonable base is an amount that is within the market rate and makes it worth your while to leave home (i.e. pay for transport, food, rent etc. and still have some disposable income). When you have learnt and can demonstrate you are one of the best in the market for your area of work, you can start dreaming of “plenty, plenty money”.

You are so on point, especially on adding value to an organisation. As an employer and recruiter my greatest nightmare has always been recruitment. I am always scared of recruiting. The average Nigerian graduate assumes that because he is a graduate, he must be employed. Often times, they are semi illiterates who have no idea about the course they have studied nor the career path they need to forge for themselves. I cry silently reading through some answer scripts, very disastrous, alarming and appalling. Most don't even have basic MS Office skills. All they think of is money and pay day.

I weep for this country; the majority of our educated youths are unemployed. Having gone through the hardship of academic stress in our tertiary institutions, we cannot but wait for that day when our hardwork would pay off. Unfortunately, we are now out of school and still awaiting that day when we would be gainfully employed. We are yet to stop depending on our parent's benevolence; not because we are not trying to get a job but because the employers wouldn't employ us. The painful part is sometimes, we are so sure we did wonderfully well during the interview yet we never get the offer. Sometimes, the employers promise to get back to us, but if we wait for eternity, we still wouldn't get called. Based on all these unwholesome events, we tend to begin to believe that we are actually unemployable as quoted by the op; whom I so much respect but disagree with on this assertions. I have only six things to tell you about the lies they tell us.
1. They say majority of us are unemployable just to cover up for the fact that they never wanted to employ us in the first place. It is just a case of calling the dog a bad name just to hang it or how do you explain going through five stages of an interview only to be dropped at the last stage due to no verifiable justification.
2. They demand from us what they themselves do not have or how can we explain employers asking for a number of professional affiliations and certifications which the employer apparently does not have. They joined a system that aided their career development through these trainings and certifications but they in turn expect you to have it before joining the organization.
3. They ask you to cheapen yourself by trying to underpay you or in the case of the ladies, make you go the long mile, only for you to reject such advances then they later come and say you are not qualified.
4. They use recruiting firms to employ you so as to contract you as a contract worker; these were same positions and job role for which they were gainfully employed as of their own time. In the recruitment process, they would set questions most of them cannot confidently answer well just for them to make majority of the applicants fail; this is easily observed in job test where applicants are asked questions not related to either the job being applied for now the experience expected to carry out such roles; why measure a fish capabilities based on its inability to climb a tree.
5. They make us apply for job openings that they have either filled up or have already handpicked people they wish to give the slots to; Nepotism is the order of the day.
6. More than 85% of applicants for any job opening would end up not getting the job because there are limited openings. However, it is in less than 10% of Nigeria job openings that applicants are selected on merit.
In conclusion, do not be deceived, you are not the problem, work harder on becoming better, gain new skills and don't ever give up; you will get your own job.

As much as I understand your pain, you have to realise that this country's over dependence on imported products has done so much damage to our local industries (we all drive cars and yet none of us can make a tire. Dunlop is gone).

If there are no local industries, where is the money coming from?. You the graduate, can you help the company earn this money? The little money they still have is what they use to pay salaries. Each time Chinese products flood our market, another person's job is NO LONGER required. The company quietly releaves him of his duty. If you cannot help the company earn more money or gain stronger ground in Nigerian market or stop the Chinese imports that are running our industries out of business, why should they employ you at all?
Do you just want to collect salary, watch the company fold up say "E kpele O" and waka comot?

While I agree with you on the various points you made about continuous improvement, your headline statement is very wrong.

The truth is that young Nigerian graduates are not given the same opportunity to succeed as some of their peers in the developed world. When unemployment is very high as it is in Nigeria, the few opportunities available become extremely competitive and people are eliminated based on some flimsy excuses. Besides the best of the few opportunities will go to the children of the high and the mighty leaving few opportunities to the regular people.

The same Nigerian graduates go abroad and succeed. Our people are succeeding in the UK, US, Canada and several other countries. If some of these people did not travel abroad, their careers may never have started in Nigeria and you folks will say it is because they are unemployable. That is very judgmental and wrong. Our current political and economic climates limits the number of people that can succeed in Nigeria. A country where the budget for the 600 people in the National Assembly is more than most States in the Federation.

Nigerian graduates are actually victims of the society and not unemployable.

You made a very good point by requesting that we add value to organizations to earn our keep but I guess that is a digression from my grouse. My advocacy is a level playing ground for all applicants; giving the unemployed opportunities to learn and give their best to job opportunities than asking for 10 years experience from people you put age limit of 28 years on.
Now to the issue of value, the business environment is highly competitive and demands ingenuity; most Nigerian organizations maintain stereotype operations such that things are done the way it has been done in the past without support for innovation and flexibility. Staff members who may want to bring about change are scorched and castigated using the parlance of 'don't outshine your master' therefore limiting the input of creative workers, yet they blame all workers at the end of the day, when evidently, they were never given the required opportunity.
In conclusion, I am not talking of the lazy worker who just needs a job to get by and make salaries; I am talking of those who crave to make things happen yet not given the opportunity and unfortunately labelled as unemployable.

In addition to all we have said. To be a successful entrepreneur. Which should be the goal of GRADUATES now. Since there's no enough companies and job in our country today.

They should strive to know:
*Who they are
* what they can do effortlessly
*what they love to do

*Then decide between what they can do effortlessly and what they love to do, which one can people pay them money for.

* Research and find out where can they get the people who will pay for what they can do. Where is their demand/market going to be fulfilled .

Then create a platform to bring them together
*How do they know how much they are worth
*How do they continue to get customers
*How to continue to grow the enterprise
*How do they separate theirself from the enterprise I. E registering the business and letting it run itself not them running it

YOu want the industry to give you opportunities to learn. As per you want them to teach you and pay you salary. Free teaching?

Where I work, there's this IT student who is always pressing his phone, whatsapp and facebook infront of his PC.

My boss too has a phone. But he's always doing a lot of MSExcel calculations. He hardly looks at his phone when in the office. The IT and other gradutes have not taught him anything new. He is the one who is even teaching them how to perform one calculation or another.

How do you think he feels about the IT student and gradutes?
-
If you really believe that you can bring change to an industry, you should understand the full workings of that business and why they do things the way they do them. Your change may step on a lot of unpleasant toes that you are not seeing due to your inexperience.
-
You must see yourself as the boss himself and wear his shoes to know what he is feeling. Don't just criticize him. Only then can you pass accross your new idea with your own eyes clearly open.

One of the flimsy excuse that landed them in the unemployable state is what you just sampled again. For example, in Computer Engineering a typical uni undergraduate isn't suppose to see things like motherboards, RAM and HDD in lab while undergoing their B.Sc program. It is the students who erroneously think Computer Engr in Uni is same as Computer Engineering Technical Certification where they get to learn PC repairs. Most times the syllabus thought is very similar to what the teach in advance nations.
