Medicine no be beans. As a dental surgery student, I had to steer clear of every form of destraction be it in form of friends or social media until I crossed 3rd MBBS.. My bulk of dental work which we did simultaneously with MB programme didn't help matters. My internal medicine and surgery (4th BDS/5th MB) dealt a greater blow on me and plunged me into depression even though I read for more 18hours a day (wheneva I didn't go for clinical postings..). But anyways, when I look at the destination, I know the toil is worth it #Dental surgeon

They have very similar course loads with few exceptions such as some specialised fields in Dentistry and medicine viz oral and maxillofacial surgery oral pathology, Orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, obsesstrics and gynaelocogy and physiciatry.. Those Are the major courses that separate them.
As for the professional Exams, Dental students take six prior to graduation while those in medicine take four.
From what I've seen in UI's curriculum Dentistry is more voluminous.

Do you want to talk about the lectures (from 8am-6pm everyday, no break, sometimes some profs can hold lectures at 10pm, and you won't say crap) the practicals (during preclinical) and the ward rounds/clinics (during clinical)....

What of the crazy exams, answering 800 objective questions in 3hrs, then coming back that same day to answer all 17essay questions..... Even before that, you write exams nearly every month.....

They write 2nd MBBS, 3rd MBBS, and anoda MBBS in their 5th yr with final yr medical students, and still do dental courses added to it. Their 5th yr is med & surg with 6th yr med student. They'll undergo the same ward round, be in d same class and write d same exam with d same marking. They separate fully in 6th yr.

Don't tell me i was lying. I'm a student of UNN, and that's how it's run here. Mikolion87 even said it in his comment too. I'm a dental student, and i don't derive pleasure from lying. We do 2nd mbbs, 3rd mbbs together. Then in 5th yr, we do internal medicine & surg with 6th yr medical students. It's their final yr course (5th mbbs), but it's 4th bds for us. Then in 6th yr, we'll continue dental courses such as oral & maxillofacial surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology, periodontology, oral radiology, etc and then write our 5th bds. Don't be ignorant. Ask anoda dental or medical student. Besides, it's still d same body (MDCN) that is in charge of d duo, and it's even a dentist, Dr T.A.B. Sanusi that's d current acting registrar of MDCN. Even d immed. past president of national postgraduate medical college of nigeria, Prof. Ademola Abayomi is a dentist.

For emphasis, in dentistry we don't take 4th mbbs since we separate from medical students of d same level or class after 4th yr. However, we join d final yr medical students in our 5th yr to do internal medicine & surgery, and undergo d same clinical postings for d this course which is their 5th mbbs but it's our 4th bds, and also write d same exam with d same marking for it. Maybe, u don't know how dental education operates.

Biochemistry is one very stressful course. Back in my 300Lv as a biochem student we offered eleven BCh courses and were complaining. But now as a medical student, im going to study those 11 courses + Physiology + anatomy within a space of 18 months. NB: no carry overs are allowed this time around

its funny how some of my BCh course mates back then would fail more than five courses in a semester. No stress because they proceed to the next level and would clear off their carry overs.

I'm standing as someone who has experienced the BCh point of view and still going through the MBBS process...

in the united states and UK. Their citizens give special care to their eyes, teeth's, and Pets.Thats why Dentistry, Vetinary medicine, have gained autonomy (separated from medicine) They are also very qualified Doctors and Surgeon's.

Nigeria, a second class country which mimics the educational structure of the UK also granted Dentistry and Vet-medicine autonomy. They can be studied as separate courses on their own

People think dentistry is about uprooting teeth only, until i ventured into it and realised it's not true. I regretted d years i wasted looking for medicine (although i got it but lost it due to finance). That's how i started browsing about dentistry and realised it's much more than teeth. Today, an oral & maxillofacial surgeon can operate on tongue cancer while an oral pathologist will diagnose it and so many other pathologies of d head & neck region. Prof S.M. Balaji & Dr Abdullah Masud (of India & Bangladesh respectively) do this regularly which may be followed by radiotherapy and/or chemo. I believe guidance counsellors should do their work well to educate students about dentistry.

Medicine of course is an interesting course.

But, studying medicine in nigeria is not really that though - but you must be versed in time management and be able to read a big volume of books in a short time.

For those in Dentistry, they will have to write the following exams: 2nd MBBS, 2nd BDS, 3rd MBBS, 3rd BDS, 4th BDS (5th MBBS), 5th BDS. Which translates to 6 professional exams

Those in Medicine write the following: 2nd MBBS, 3rd MBBS, 4th MBBS, 5th MBBS. Translates to 5 professional exams.

I guess you now know which is more voluminous
