Reason for this is supervision, if your site block maker is not as skilled as the block industry guys, you will lose on blocks even if they produce only 20 blocks per bag of cement. Mixing is key, there is a required number of times to turn sand, a required water content, compaction method, and turn duration to get the best of blocks.

Columns are needed to bear the weight of other addition that you might decide to load on the building. Some roof types like the stone coated tiles with very high pitch and roof mounted tanks for water could be of substantial weight.
