JESSE—The burial reception in honour of a 111-years-old woman (name withheld) at Boboroku community of Jesse in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State turned awry weekend, as a plain clothes policeman reportedly slumped and died during a clash between the community youth and a team of soldiers drafted from the 19 Battalion, Koko, to maintain peace.

It was gathered that there was rowdiness during the sharing of food and drink at the party and in the process some of the youth allegedly made attempts to disarm two soldiers, who had tried to restore orderliness.

One person was reportedly shot on the leg as others sustained various degrees of injuries in the melee that ensued, while the windscreen and windows of at least five cars, including one hilux belonging to the soldiers, were also destroyed by the youths who went berserk over the incident.

Community sources disclosed that the late policeman simply identified as Imomoh, who resides in the community, was said to have tried to intervene during the rowdy session between the soldiers and the youths.

Giving details of the incident, a guest at the reception said: “The soldiers were called in to restore calm after the youths in the community tried to hijack food meant for guests at the reception.”

The guest, who gave his name as Paul Amodu, said: “Vexed by the presence of the soldiers, the youths turned their anger on them, leading to fisticuffs amidst gunshots by the soldiers, during which Imomoh was said to have been hit by a bullet; he slumped and died.”

Also speaking, a security source at the Sapele Area Command, said: “The death of the policeman who is a resident of the community, enraged the youths who went wild, attacking guests and destroying vehicles.

“The soldiers had to apply minimum force in trying to defend themselves by shooting into the air to scare the rampaging youths, who were trying to disarm them leading to the shooting of one person in the leg.”

Confirming the clash, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Ania-maka, described the incident as “quite unfortunate.”

Back then in the university I was told the roles of a country's armed force (nigerian military) entrenched in her constitution. The defence of the territorial integrity and other core interests of the nation . But today the reserve is the case, inside the Nigeria military you will see junkie rapist, a drunk and drugs abuse. What is the faith of a common man in the street? And how would nigeria come out of her mess, yes, I know beyond every perilous time there is always a great future . But the govt and her citizens are not making any effort to put the country in the right shape before international communities.

I won't say this is poverty.
Many Nigerians and their passion for food in occasions and ceremonies is shameful. Though these are things they can afford and have in their various homes you just find them constituting nuisance.

Hunger in the land.

At this rate, Buhari will have to campaign to extend his dubious school feeding program to the people.

While under the last administration, people were eating like this at iya Sikira's buka.

The above story is misleading, it don't add up...besides in another news, I heard that do soldiers was shooting up as their usual way during an occasion as a show off, then the policeman on mofty approached them to let them know the implications of their actions, that a stray bullet might hit someone.low and behold , one of the soldiers was pissed off for his effrontery, immediately, he gave the policeman a Superman punch on his chest. The policeman slumped and died when he was about to walk away after other soldiers prevented him from retaliating....

You are right bro....I wonder about the kind of spirit behind party food. If it is just a cup of jollof rice, people will sha want to taste it. As if they never chop rice for their house before, even better ones than the ceremony's own. We are very barbaric about this especially in southern naija. And yu will also see greed of some caterers hiding meats meant for the ceremony, after they had been paid for their job. People just bad and spoilt.

Why would a citizen attempt to disarm a security operative in the first place. Stop blaming the government, but your co citizens to learn to behave right. Same way they would also have attempted to disarm a police officer.

I don't know what kinda training our policemen and military men especially the army get. They would always misfire and someone would be hit. They can't refrain a person without shooting??! There is a difference between shooting at a person and shooting in the air to scare people off. undecided

Not just hunger. Greed, lack of civility and indiscipline. People just like to do "open eye" anyhow.

It was a funeral. If you respect the dead and the bereaved family, hijacking food & causing mayhem will not be priority.
