What's wrong?

"Miss you are stained" a female student said as she tapped me. I was Soo scared and embarrassed but I quickly rushed down to my car and drove to the hospital.

At the hospital, they confirmed that I was losing the baby and there was nothing I could do to stop it. That could have been a warning sign about my relationship but I choosed to ignore it.

I got home feeling very dejected. I didn't respond to anyone who asked about him neither did I join the rest of the lodgemates to celebrate. I just went up to my room and had a good cry. I lit about 4sticks of Benson and hedges before I finally slept off and while I slept, all I dreamt of was Toshiba.

The next morning I was already up and making arrangements to go to Benin city. I wanted to know if I could procure his release so I went in the early hours. The officers in SARs didn't let me see him or any of them, infact they threatened to arrest me as an accomplice. They said he would be released if innocent so I shouldn't bother myself...

The days crawled and the nights were scary without Toshiba by my side. I heard that about 3guys were released and the others who owned up as cultists were asked to denounce before they would be released.

Unfortunately, the state government were already interested in there case so instead of being released, they were sent to State CID. The period was hell for me, losing a pregnancy and always driving to the station to give him food and cash.

After about a week in State CID Benin, they were sent to court. That day of court hearing, having never been in a court before, I wore trousers and so I was not allowed inside. I was told the court is like a church where ladies had to tie their headscarf and the men remove their caps.

I sat outside all through their proceedings and when I heard from the magistrate that they would be remanded in prison, my whole world crumbled. Not just were they remanded, they were to spend about 4months before appearing in court again.

As they moved them in handicuff to the blackmaria van, my eyes bled with tears. Then I remembered I had parents whom their phone call could possibly turn things around. I decided then to call my mom.

"Sapphire there is no way I would be identified with a criminal, never!!" My mom shouted on the phone as I kept crying and pleading for her mercy.

My dad had earlier sighed and banged the call on my ears when I told him of the happenings and here was my mom doing the same to me. I didn't call any of them again. I just quietly drove to the Prison yard but I was not allowed access to see them cause they were new in mates.

I drove to the State CID office and demanded to see their O.C legal. She took about 150k from me through the officer in charge of the case Mr Tony and she assured me that my husband would be exonerated from the crime, how dare she now keep mute and watch him sent to Jail.

Mr Tony kept calming me down and told me O.C legal did her best but her hands were tied but cause of the money I paid, Toshiba might not stay up to a month in the prison yard. He told me the prisons was a more better place than the police cell. He said they had recreational activities and they were much free in the compound.

That still didn't go down well with me, I wanted O.C legal herself to tell me those words and she did. I got home with much hope even though my heart was wounded. I was cashless, my parents had stopped sending me money cause I refused to nullify my marriage with Toshiba and now he is in Jail, I spent all that was left in the 1.5million we were given. I was in for a big mess.

That night, mommy called me and I was still crying. She got pissed and was like "why are you crying over someone who is possibly not thinking about you in there". That word hit me and I knew it could be through but I needed Toshiba around me, it was like the torture I get from him was fun then and I just couldn't help it.

The next morning, mommy sent 200k into my account and said I should better do something about my life than sit and mourn over a man who isnt dead. She asked if his parents are aware to which I said Yes but they didn't care.

All his mom did was cry on the phone and then contacted her brother in China who I later extorted about 50k from when I became really pissed about there actions. They didn't even bother how I fed or how there son was coping. They never sent me a dime for the countless trips I made to Benin and I wondered what they would do now he has finally landed in Jail.

His father supported he rot in Jail but still he didn't bother to know if I was well taken care of. I didn't really talk much with them neither did I tell them I lost a pregnancy. All my mom said was "if his parents don't care and I the one to care?" then she dropped the call.

The 200k was spent on just Toshiba. I made sure he lived like a king in the Prison. It was always visit today, tomorrow off and then visit the next day. In all the visits, I would full bacco bags for him and still load him with money.

The first day I visited him, I cried uncontrollably that the warders started consoling me. He was dressed in green and they said it was for awaiting trial individuals that convicts are dressed in blue. I was told to stop crying that they only wear the green only when they were going to see their visitors. My husband and I communicated behind bars and warders we're always at our back to hear everything we discussed. I was made to taste whatever food I brought to him and that felt really weird to me. What was more humiliating and heart wrenching was the cruel way the warders would talk to my husband Toshiba.

He started writing me sweet letters and explained that Cannabis was the culprit for all the ill treatments he meted out to me and swore he was indeed a changed man who has accepted Jesus in his life. This made me to do more cause I believed that he would truly be a changed loving person once he comes out. I stopped my luxury life and I drew closer to God cause I believed it was only him who would deliver husband from whatever pain he was going through.

Chapter Nineteen

I kept showing up for my husband and followed up in his case. Entered offices were I was not even qualified to enter just to see his name was erased. Then was when I seized the opportunity of milking his China Uncle. If they demanded for 50k for any procedure I would increase it to 100k but yet it was never enough, I was starving to make Toshiba happy in Prison.

I started online punting, invested in games of rollover and when my proceeds gets to 10k, I would withdraw 9k and start allover with 1k. Luck kept smiling on me and I believed the universe truly sees through our pains.

A day came that I missed my normal visitation routine, I spent 2days and went the next day and Toshiba exhibited a character which left me wondering if indeed he had changed or even appreciated my efforts.

She was just Toshiba's "Money machine and Sex tool" nothing more...

Her brain has been fried....sex is overrated, she's plain stupid.

I got to the Prison yard after about 2days absence at about 1:25pm. I sent words across to him that I was around so he would come see me as I usually do but after about an hour of waiting Toshiba was still not out.

I asked one of the errand boys if he actually saw him and he said Yes. I was like what was keeping him then, so I gave the guy a 100naira token and asked him to go check on Toshiba maybe he wasn't sure I was the one around and he immediately left to call him.

By 3:45pm, Toshiba was still not out and I was already getting worried. I hear stories that people die everyday in prison wards and gets disposed immediately, what if Toshiba happened to be unlucky. I quickly disposed the idea and sent words to him again.

The warders on duty had become my friend cause of my constant visits but when he saw I have overstayed, he said I should drop some money for him as overdue visit pay. I dropped 1k and patiently waited for the arrival of his Excellency Toshiba Obiugo.

This time, he came out and wasn't smiling as usual even though my lips hurt from being apart am feigning a "I don't mind the wait smile". "Obim" I started "what kept you for long?". He was reluctant to reply me but after about 2mins he just told me visiting hours was almost over that I should hand him whatever I had and start going back.

"How could he" I thought to myself but still managed to smile. I handed him the bag and he made to stand up and leave immediately. My eyes were already wet when I beckoned on him to wait. "Did you keep me here for that long on purpose?" I asked while praying he would at least lie to me.

He sat back down, looked me in the eye and said "next time, miss an appointment" he hissed. I tried to explain why I couldn't come the previous day but he wouldn't even listen. "It's okay" he said "atleast you have learnt your lessons". He stood up and left. The warder friend was just shaking his head for me.

I got tired of the stress I was going through and the penury just to make Toshiba comfortable. Most officers even tried sleeping with me and I kept all chats safe cause I was to show Toshiba when he finally comes out that I remained that chaste wife he knew even though the temptations were much.

One afternoon after driving out angrily from the Prisons cause of the way a warder shouted on Toshiba and even slapped him, I headed to State CID to meet O.C legal. She had promised me that Toshiba wouldn't be spending up to a month in custody but he was clocking 6months already and the court was on strike. Aside that, they said their case was a criminal case and would be taken up by high court.

I got to her office and lay face down in tears. "Mommy please release my husband, you have to get him out if there please mommy" I said as I wept bitterly on her feet. I guess that challenged her office and she quickly picked up her phone and made some calls. She consoled me like a mother and wrote a letter immediately to the Prisons. She ordered Tony, the officer in charge of their case to go the Prison with me that evening and notify them that they would be appearing in court in 2days time.

While in Tony's car and headed to the Prisons, he started caressing my laps and was like, "Sapphire you are hot! I need a night with you before your husband is released". I politely told him that am not a cheat and my husband's traditions strikes a married woman mad should she cheat. He said I was bluffing and if I wanted him to remain there till December, I should refuse him.

I grew red in anger and of course I exploded "one more word about sleeping with me and I would make sure you get fired!" I said and adjusted myself in the car. Then I became scared of what I just said, what if he hurts me or even navigated and killed me in a hidden place. "Am sorry sir" I quickly said and he nodded. He didn't say a word again till we got to the Prison and handed them the papers.
