The woods are tied together (tightly) obviously

The sticks are tied with an elastic band. They [the sticks] expand when soaked in water. They were tied either loosely or the band is capable of expanding to a certain size which will accomodate the sticks' new size.
There is nothing like magic or juju, it's all trickery which people believe from ignorance or refuse to disbelieve for reasons known to them.

On a second thought why didn't OP ask how it was done? It doesn't look like jazz but a carefully performed routine. It looks no different from how I fill plastic bottles into a paper bag and make them all stand as opposed to lying flat.
I believe the band was put into the bottle before the sticks then they were placed one by one until they stacked so tight they held the band into place.
