I just saw this brain teaser. Two days ago a girl said she was 10yrs. she will be 13yrs next year. what is today's date and when is her birthday?? |
Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by lordbeans(m): 1:46am On Feb 04, 2018 |
Matinoh: Birthday:- 31st-Dec-2017; Today's date : 1st-Jan-2018; |
Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by Matinoh: 12:21pm On Feb 04, 2018 |
lordbeans:Not sure of this answer... 2days ago she was 10... so if today's date is ist January then next year she will be 12 not 13..... |
Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by lordbeans(m): 1:18pm On Feb 04, 2018 |
Matinoh: It is correct. Two days ago she was 10 (since 31st Dec 2017 was her birthday). Today which is 1st of Jan 2018 she is 11 but by 31st Dec 2018 (the same year) she will be 12, and next year 31st Dec 2019 she will be 13. The emboldened is why it is called a puzzle, it is not necessarily true. |

Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by lordbeans(m): 4:11pm On Feb 28, 2018 |
Soneh: De Moivres theory states that for any complex number z and integer n z=(r(cos(theta)+ i sin (theta)))^n= r^n(cos(n*theta)+ i sin (n*theta)). converting z= 1 + i sqrt(3) to polar form, you find r= sqrt(1^2+(sqrt(3))^2)= sqrt(1+3)=2. and theta= arctan(sqrt(3))=60 or pi/3; using De Moivres theory 2^8(-1/2+i sqrt(3)/2)= 2^7[-1 + i sqrt (3)]. so the answer is 2^7[-1 + i sqrt (3)].. |

Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by lordbeans(m): 10:26am On Mar 20, 2018 |
Homeboiy: A function is a relation between an input set and output set such that for any input there is assigned to it exactly one output. What this means is that for a relation say y=f(x)=x+1, an input say 1 assigns an output number to it; in this case f(1)=2. Also f(x)= x^2 is a function because f(1)=1 and f(-1)=1; this is a function (even if different input gives the same output) as long as the output is exactly one. Now a relation that is not a function is f(x)=sqrt(x), because f(4)= +2 or -2; so it assigns two outputs to one input - this is not a function. In your question y^2=x is not a function because of the aforementioned reason: it assigns two outputs to an input. I have attached the requested plot. As for question 2, tables (a) and (c) are functions while table (b) is not a function because of the reasons above. Question (3) is straightforward, so I will let you do that yourself.

Great mathematicians please I need solution to this question: a trader buys some oranges for 50naira each. he found out that six of them are bad.he sells the rest at 80naira each in the market and makes a profit of 450naira. how many oranges did he buy |

Re: Nairaland Mathematics Clinic by dejt4u(m): 2:50pm On Mar 21, 2018 |
gpercuxionz: Cost Price = 50x ( if x rep. the number of oranges bought) Selling Price = 80(x - 6) Profit = Selling Price - Cost Price, 450 = 80(x - 6) - 50x, 450 = 80x - 480 - 50x, 450 = 30x - 480, 450 + 480 = 30x, 930 = 30x, x = 31 1 Like |
