UCH Ibadan, A Death Trap: Official Reply From UCH Management by Famocious(m): 9:45am On Mar 22, 2018 |
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN Our attention has been drawn to the trending https://www.nairaland.com/4406717/uch-ibadan-labelled-death-trap death of one of our patients, Oluwaseun Ezekiel Female, 24years who was referred to our Facility from a hospital in Ikorodu after being managed unsuccessfully for FOUR YEARS. The writer of the trending story was unduly emotional, sensational, misinformed and misguided. He only tried to whip up sentiments. The patient had been ill since 2014 with poor compliance to medications and presented with Cardiogenic shock without oxygen from the referral hospital.Resuscitation was commenced within five minutes of arrival without waiting for any payment as this is our routine practice. Late Oluwaseun was given the best medical service that she required when she was brought in.We won't like to go into details of her condition when she was brought in because of the Doctor- Patient unwritten confidential relationship. That a staff was eating so early into a new day had nothing to do with the service rendered to Seun because treatment already was ongoing before payment was made. The emergency room doctors- Registrars, Senior Registrars and the TWO Consultants (including) a Senior Cardiologist who saw the patient were not known to the writer because be couldn't distinguished one from the other. Besides, the conclusion that the patient would only benefit from CardiopulmonaryTransplant was also unknown to the writer and any attempt to cast aspersions on the excellent clinical practices at the University College Hospital, Ibadan by a relation who is not fully informed is rather unfortunate. It would interest the Public to note that UCH has the best Cardiologist and Cath Lab in the country as at today. Any wonder why Seun was referred to us for proper and excellentcare. It's so unfortunate that Seun passed on but it should be noted that her death has nothing to do with the excellent medical service given to her within the short spate of time she spent alive in our Hospital. Thanks. Signed:Management UCH, IBADAN 9 Likes

Nigerians are always quick to blame death of patients on hospital management which is very wrong. As a doctor, i know there are lapses in the medical sector and service delivery on our side. But trust me, no medical doctor or personnel will out of wickedness or negligence let someones's coffin rest on his/her conscience. Some cases get escalated and are beyond our control, but we will always do our best to save lives. TeamMedics 53 Likes

No need to argue please. Nigeria is a death trap not to talk of UCH or whatever 'primary' health care centre joor. 10 Likes 1 Share |

I can't see any comment on the cashier who could not do his job because he ate Amala and Ewedu. UCH should address that too! If she suffered from Cardiogenic shock; then her boyfriend has every reason to thank God that this girl did not give up under him. It's just God that saves us. These girls be shouting "harder harder" when they are unfit walking corpses looking for who to put into trouble. 21 Likes 4 Shares |

Lame as usual. What a stupid rejoinder...Does anybody need a degree in forensic criminology to decipher that whoever wrote this piece of crap from UCH is trying to pull wool over our eyes? I cry for this land... Are you contradicting/denying the professional irresponsibility for which most doctors in Nigeria are known for? This kind of unconscionable attempt to cover up and explain away criminal negligence can only take place in this country... 40 Likes 4 Shares |

the response from the hospital sound mature and convincing however most patients want medical doctors to perform miracle or magic on there loved ones forgetting that God is the greatest physician and healer. why most of us will not swallow what the hospital said is because of what we have seen and heard in our hospitals. the level of ignorance, unseriousness and wickedness among our health workers is second to none. 8 Likes |

Forget all this damage control, as for now Nigeria is the worst place on earth to have any 'major' ailment, i am not saying this out of spite or any sentiment but because of first hand experience. I remember when my cousin had complications from liver issues and i rushed him to a teaching hospital, what i saw with my two eyes can make a man depressed for life. The healthcare system in Nigeria requires urgent attention!!! 9 Likes |

We have been waiting for this. What about the cashier eating Amala and Ewedu by 12 am? It is very wrong to eat such food at such hours of the day, even though he's a shift worker. That is a straight ticket to heavy sleep on duty He should be queried. 2 Likes |

Good.....the complainant never told us dt the girl was mismanaged for FOUR years at a private hospital, and was only brought to UCH Ibadan when she was dying. Nigerians....always rushing to apportion blame. doctors were already treating the case. they said a clerk was eating....and so ? even if she weren't eating, would a clerk be the one to treat the case ? 12 Likes 1 Share |

It goes without saying that patients themselves play a greater role in their own morbidity and mortality. After jumping from chemist to chemist, from traditional healer to spiritual healer, they then come to the hospital at the 11th hour, expecting a miracle. Nigerians need to get gigantic mirrors so they can take a long hard look at themselves. When I see such patients come to the clinic or the emergency, i look on them with pity, cos they succeeded in wasting scarce money on the wrong treatment, yet worsening their condition. 7 Likes 1 Share |

maestroferddi: Grow up. The girl could have only benefited from a cardiac transplant.... Which tells me that she had a serious cardiac issue , and as the report noted, she had been brought in in cardiogenic shock. Once they are saying that you need a cardiac transplant...that means that you could die at any minute, any day, unless you get a transplant. Yes, I know some doctors....but sometimes, some deaths are unavoidable. 2 Likes |

bloody liars. the govt needs to have a customer satisfactory feedback form after avery treatment, let the patient raye and appraise their treatment.if any staff apear more than 2 lows per month,he should be fired! ASAP . and those with consecutive highs should be promoted. 4 Likes |

"...with poor compliance to medications" This is nothing short of a poor attempt by UCH to absolve itself of any blame. Was there any internal investigation before this statement was released? Standard practice dictates that in case of any incident leading to death, the affected staff(s) are supposed to go on paid/unpaid leave [depending o the circumstances] until investigations is concluded. SoldierBoy1: You won't understand what you just wrote until you are admitted to a government hospital. Here in the SW, staff have a very attitude towards patients. Everything is about money and bribery, if not, you're getting nothing. The staff were very friendly in the north [where I served], unlike the hostile ones here in Lagos but there were not enough equipment and facilities for them to work with. Even the ward was crowded but they gave me a special space in their store [it's actually a ward but contains damaged and incomplete equipments] where I slept during my stay. 4 Likes |

Don't be quick to judge until you know the full truth of a story. I believe no hospital would deliberately want Patients to die. So let's wait for more clarification before judging. 2 Likes 2 Shares |
