Did you ask what exactly makes PhD program in Federal universities in Nigeria slower or lengthy? If the major reasons are known, may be before you start anywhere in Nigeria you can first tackle such issues.

I did not study in Nigeria but I have co-supervised some master and Phd students with some Nigerian professors.

What I realized (personal observation),is that majority of those supervisors lack research capabilities, less experience with research formulations (they can appear experience), creativity is low, mostly think inside the box, equipments and laziness.

But they blame it on ASUU, pastors, Imams, Fulani herdsmen, IPOB, native doctors.

When I saw your previous post on Lecturers in Nigeria publishing in unknown venues and their excuse being "they thought publishing in Top Journals and Conferences would be expensive" I just LOLed and liked your post grin. I wanted to say something but I thought since you didn't school in Nigeria, you would be totally clueless and naive about of how things worked here but with this your post I can infer you have an idea albeit a nascent one.

Those Lecturers that gave "ignorance" as an excuse are just full of shit. They knew, I am 100% sure of that. But since Universities in Nigeria don't care where you publish, as long as you "publish", they don't care. They know how rigorous it is to publish in the likes of IEEE Xplore, Elsevier, A.C.M., T. and F. and so on so they don't bother; Why should they? When they can submit their bullshit work to an unknown journal and still get same promotion? The system is a vicious cycle of mediocrity. They will be roaming about answering "Prof" and "Doctor" with ego's bigger than Mount Everest, feeling like gods, frustrating students, self acclaimed "experts" in their field, who dare question these Supreme Beings here?

You need to take a look at their Ph.D thesis, you will literally puke. This is not the first time I am hearing a story of how they applied for lecturing positions abroad and were bounced. Other stories were very similar to yours. Those that have up to 2 to 4 publications in SCI, SCI-e, SSCI are the very brilliant ones. You need to meet the others.

You are right. I think the promotion in academic ranks in Nigerian tertiary institutions should be revamped to work like tenure-track system with conditions (successful number of quality publications (articles, chapters, books), successful grant and project management).

Also, plagiarism software such as Turnitin, ithenticate etc should be made accessible and plagiarism limit on MSC/MA candidates should be less than 20% while those of Phd less than 10%.

Very important: students evaluation for each instructed is done twice per semester at my end and any instructors graded less than 3 will face board questions and for 3 times such instructors likely loose his or her job. Such thing should be introduced in Nigerian institutions and since is anonymous, this may likely activate the instructors to work smartly and effectively.

I doubt if any PG School in Nigeria uses plagiarism software to flag infringement. It is a sad tale. The education system is actually a microcosm of what is obtainable here. I really cant figure how things can be get right. I once challenged a PG Coordinator of a renowned federal university in Nigeria on the issue of flagging plagiarized work, the reply I got was disheartening.

That said, I want to believe the 10% is kind of too much considering that most foreign schools I have seen peg it at 23-25%. If they can still put it at that range, it is not bad IMO.

To give my input on publishing in internationally recognized journal with standard, I want to say you are very much right. However, it is not to be over-simplified. How do one reconcile a nation with poor R & D, yet we crave for what is obtainable in countries that take R & D serious.

Take for instance, I am just a 'jobless' Master student in a federal university. All the papers I submitted for publications are mostly to some Q2/Q3 journal because it is free, not because it isn't worthy of being in Q1 journal or something.

This country is always peculiar. 'Good' things are always difficult to attain in this country. It is what it is.

Good one from Unical. I want to believe real turnitin software, not those related online plagiarism software that catch nothing but feebles. If Unical can have access to turnitin server, what stops NUC making it compulsory to other universities. However, 10% is not a good one. My university uses 21% for MSc for min of 10,000 words.

Research grants for young scientists

As I mentioned earlier, I will be posting some grants and research funding opportunities for interested and capable scientists. Below are recent calls for two different grants and award. I won the first one last year, so others can benefit also:

UNESCO Green Chemistry research grants for young scientists

Green chemistry has become a target for cutting-edge research into sustainable technologies. The grant programme aims to promote the implementation of innovative research projects in green chemistry by young scientists that respect the 12 principles of green chemistry. Young scientists aged with a PhD degree (or equivalent) in chemistry or its allied areas are invited to compete; the age limit is 39. Successful projects will be selected by an international scientific jury. Grants will be up to US$30,000 and should be awarded for research that may be completed in one year.

2018 CHEMRAWN VII Prize for Green Chemistry: IUPAC

The CHEMRAWN VII Prize was first announced in August 2008 and since then it has been awarded every two years at the IUPAC International Conference on Green Chemistry. The Prize of USD 5000 is granted to a young investigator (less than 45 years of age) from an emerging region who is actively contributing to research in Green Chemistry.

The deadline for the 2018 edition is 31st March 2018 and applications should be submitted through the dedicated application form available at this link: https://iupac.org/2018-chemrawn-vii-prize-green-chemistry-call-nominations/

Its 20% for masters & 15% for Phd in Uniport.
Yes there are some good lecturers, I know two in my dept that a journal in Springer and Elsevier always request articles from every four months. And if I recall correctly, they are often paid for these articles because when published, its not open access, but viewers are made to purchase them online.

A lot of schools use plagiarism software I think. I did my MSc in Nigeria and 20 %was the benchmark for plagiarism.

Scholars! Greetings everyone! Any researcher in in for information system here? Or some one with research interest in health informatics, technology adoption? Just want to relate. My humble suggestion we can form a social network to help each other with research experiences and also guidance, some of us have access to top journal databases through our universities and we can help our brothers in Nigeria with downloads of journals with monetary access for free. All the best as we quest to contribute to field of knowledge.

To respond to your objection and other similar ones with a post, I can confirm all universities have the regulation. However, done be hoodwink by that, only few follow that strictly. I have seen this. There is gulf between having a guideline and implementation. Thanks.

Hello Sir, I must really say I'm highly impressed with your CV and how well you're shining the light of Nigeria over there and guiding us on this thread. I need a favour from you please. I'm trying to put up my PhD proposal which I'll defend very soon, in Computer Science (Research Area- Collaborative e-learning).
