AngelicBeing: / What kind of a slowpoke will jump a high wall to steal from people? A bottle of acid to the wall and a little kick/tap will give an unfettered access to the compound. Hollow blocks make things a lot easier. I prefer guard dogs and motion detectors. These high fences keep away burglars and thieves but not the kind of criminals most Nigerians worry about. I guess it gives people a false sense of security. \ 1 Like |

TheMinimalist: Nigeria is an enigma. People make a prison of family homes just for the fear of the unknown. The prevalence of high fences is relatively new. It gained widespread popularity from the late 1980s more so after the introduction of SAP. The economy got worse and crime went up. With SAP, the economy was awashed with Naira, people near abandoned the banks and hoarded fiscal cash at home. The result is armed robbery at NIGHT in people's homes. To counter this, people started building high fences and prison walls. Fast forward 30 years to today. The dynamics of the economy has changed. The ordinary man no longer hoard money at home with online and mobile banking, so NIGHT armed robberies at people's homes have fallen drastically and in some city neighborhood to zero. With this scenario, high fence or prison wall is not a reaction to modern crime challenges but being stucked in the 80s. The nature of violent crime is changing; the early 2000 introduced kidnapping, now this is on the wane, we now have Fulani herdsmen and ritualist (human sacrifice). These are crimes high fences can't prevent as these crimes are perpetrated on the streets and highways of Nigeria away from family homes and at broad daylight. But see through fences and even low fences can retard these crimes. We witnessed how Evans the kidnapper used effectively high fencing to perpetrate his evil empire. Not suprisingly, Evans personal family home was a see through fence. Enough said. 1 Like |

InvertedHammer:True that, my neighbor that was robbed has 2 giant shepherds, from the discussion l had with him during my visit to Nigeria, it seems he was robbed via information through people who were doing some renovation in his house, they provided all the info to the robbers that later came to rob him, that is the only clue he said that might have happened but he has changed his security now via his guard dogs that looks like monsters, once the dog is barking at night, I hear it from one of my properties that is 3mins walk away from his house l think I am impressed with his dogs, anytime l finally decide to ever live permanently in Nigeria, l don't mind to have a minimum of 6 to 10 German Shepherd roaming where I sleep, let me see the criminal that will come into my premises |

Once again, the stand alone tank stand and the roof cage mounted water tank base. They both supply water stored from an overhead tank, aided by the force of gravity. They have some advantages and disadvantages. The steel mounted tank stand takes some compound space, some people has this fear it will fall, its a little costlier. The tank base built on top of the house mostly mounted on a decked portion of the roof is cheaper to build and does not consume compound space but can cause big problems for the health of the building if it ever leaks. Leaks can occur as water from broken joints, rain water falling into the decked tank base or even water overfill from pumps.

AngelicBeing:/ I drove around in an old 2003 Toyota with three wheelcovers missing last time I was in Nigeria. I never felt any more relaxed. My cousin ditched his LX570 and we drove around, went to sites and stopped at odd places without anyone raising eyebrows. It was a big eye-opener for both of us. In trying to secure, one may open himself to harm by drawing unnecessary attention. / 5 Likes |

InvertedHammer: I strategically purchased a Naija used 2002 4Runner, fit the purpose perfectly as intended. I also drive a Nissan Micra taxi which makes for interesting conversation at police checkpoints and driving past taxi parks (owo mi da crew) PS: Cue the "just say that's all you can afford agbeboruns" |

InvertedHammer:True that, I also think it is better to go on a very low profile and if possible go unnoticed, the hunger in the land is partly responsible for the alarming crime rate, I also prefer driving old automobiles it definitely removes too much attention from you, although regardless of what we do, God Almighty is the ultimate securer of one's life 3 Likes |

earthrealm: Thats what i think, electric fence wont kill anyone. Dangers of killing someone is a misconception. Except for the fact that someone who is on top of the fence will definitely fall to the ground which may result to injury or in worst case fatal. |

AngelicBeing: Having guard dogs is a security option especially against bugglers and theives. However, well trained guard dogs are an expensive choice. Also, not everyone is an animal lover. My wife hates cats and dogs. She literally does not eat food nor drink water in a house that owns a cat. My neighbor kept dogs for his business, we almost left the house before he ditched the dog business. I am also the kind who will properly wash hands because i played with dogs. I would not be comfortable with an animal living inside my own home unless even if it was properly trained. These things are challenges some people like me face. 1 Like |

InvertedHammer: Staying safe in Nigeria is understanding the nature of crime in Nigeria and juxtaposing this with the causal components of one's life chances. Modern day violent crime in Nigeria comprise kidnapping, cult/gang bank armed robbery, Fulani herdsmen and ritualist. As you can see, high fences is a wrong solution to these crimes. If you look at the nature of the crimes again, apart from Fulani herdsmen, all the other crimes are intelligence driven based on insider information. This is where one's lifestyle comes in. The biggest breach of personal information and lifestyle is allowing TOTAL strangers into personal space and family homes as gatemen, house help, drivers etc. This is where the diaspora and middle class home base are most vulnerable. It's good advice not to show off or draw attention to one's self. So even if you built the highest fence there is and employ a Niger republic gateman you think is an hausa man, you are open to being done for kidnapping. Same with driving about in flashy cars especially the diaspora. Same with building high fences, you draw attention to yourself. Low profile is bliss. 2 Likes |
