How to Detect Fruits Ripened Using Calcium Carbide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwk-rtHPdes Summary 1. Fruits (mangoes) ripened artificially with calcium carbide float when dropped in a bucket of water. If the fruits sink and reach the bottom of the bucket, they are naturally ripened or ripened using the natural plant hormone ethylene. Naturally ripened fruits or fruits ripened using ethylene weigh more and are more juicy; whereas fruits ripened using calcium carbide weigh less, and are dry and less juicy. 2. By the detection of acetylene gas: When calcium carbide reacts with moisture or water, it releases acetylene gas. Matchstick test: Hold a lit matchstick near a fruit artificially ripened with calcium carbide, it gives sparkles or even catches fire if traces of acetylene gas are present on the fruit surface. Caution: Do not attempt this test in close proximity to fruit crates or boxes/cartons with ripening fruits having calcium carbide and still releasing a good amount of acetylene gas as this leads to an explosion. 3. In the case of papaya (pawpaw) and banana, the stem portion of the fruit will still be green if the fruits have been artificially ripened using calcium carbide. 4. The fruits start developing black blotches on the surface within 2 - 3 days of ripening. |

Lomprico2:60% of the mangoes I've bought since mangoes came out a few weeks back were artifically ripened - with what I don't know. How I know is that they don't taste sweet like good mangoes but taste funny. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to tell by eye. |

KrystosCJ:You are on point, it goes beyond seeing powdery substance because that could be washed off by the seller, and attribute of being easy to peel off the skin do not apply to a ripe banana too because all ripe bananas regardless are easily peeled off |

This is so common in Abuja, you hardly see fruits that ripe naturally. Only water melon is better here. |
