Yeah, Nigeria and South Africa refused to sign the bill and the others have decided to move on without them in the hope that they will join the train whenever possible.

Buhari is a brain-dead living dog while Obasanjo is a dead lion.

Although the Bible says that "a living dog is better than a dead lion"
With Buhari we now know that a brain-dead living dog is worse than a dead lion.

I dedicate my FTC to everyone who believes Buhari has ruined Nigeria enough and deserves to be hauled back to Daura.
what do you understand about the treaty he delayed signing? what are its pros and cons?

Buhari is a brain dead leprechaun but he is right on this case.

There is a reason why North Africa is leading the charge.

In fact the only countries to benefit would be North Africa and Ethiopia.

North Africa is close to Europe. They have decent infrastructure to blow the entire continent out of the water, manufacturing wise.

Ethiopia has cheap electricity and is becoming the point of call for China. Through Ethiopia, the rest of Africa can be flooded with Chinese goods.

Nigeria already has the market .We don't need any free trade deal that will deal a devastating blow to industries in Nigeria that we should be protecting.

OBJ should shut up. Ignorant Yoruba baboon.

Its true... the trade deal wud affect us.

Nigeria is already a large market with or witout other Africans buying our products we wud still thrive.

Most other African dont hv d purchasing power. At the end its Nigeria dats gonna loose coz cheap products from other African countries wud flood our market causing unemployment

Well, large countries/markets do not sign free trade agreements anyhow.

I am not a Buhari fan but he's right to consider it carefully before opening up our large market. Most African countries are still poor. Unless we can penetrate Egypt, SA, Morocco, Algeria, Namibia and such markets with our goods & services.

Ordinarily if we had good power supply and a booming industrial sector, we should be rushing to sign such an agreement. But we don't.

As it is we may be flooded by Egyptian vegetable, Rwandan toothpick, South African everything, Moroccan medicines/drugs, etc.

You can imagine a case where countries like Togo, Niger republic ,Congo, Sudan, e. t.c.sign this free trade deal.

What exactly are they looking to export in exchange for the imports?

African leaders are stupid.

Did Buhari say he would not sign the agreement?
Just yesterday, à committee was set up to look into the agreement with a view to finding out how it would benefit Nigeria which to me is the best thing to do. You don't just sign anything that comes to your table especially an agreement between nations.

Even SA did not sign. This is not unconnected with their position in the African continent. Let it be reviewed first, let's see if it would be beneficial or detrimental to us. Even Obasanjo would not have just signed it if he was on that seat.

Exactly my point. ...you don't just jump into signing every document without properly understanding the cosiquencies...

When you are the largest economy of any continent you just might want to tread carefully...Brexit has similar story...

Nigeria should never sign any free trade deal beyond ECOWAS for the foreseeable future, at least until electricity becomes 18 hours everywhere in Nigeria.

If we venture outside ECOWAS, we would trade at a significant lose.

The trade deal would not favour Nigeria at the moment, it's like you people have forgotten all those companies that left us for common Ghana only to be using us as a dumping ground for their finished products.

Bill Gates have said it, we don't have a functional education system, no power, bad roads, only one viable seaport, let me stop here for now. The deal would give Nigerian manufacturers leverage to find other neighbouring african countries that has a functioning or better still better functioning system than ours to relocate to and still export the finished goods to us.

Africans are indeed backward
Britain is out of EU, although former PM Cameron wanted them to remain
But people voted against it and the people's will prevailed

Did anyone ask the citizens if they wanted to be part of Ecowas? No
Did they ask us if we wanted to be part of the WA common currency, ECO? No
Are they going to ask us about this Africa Free Trade "in Drug/kidnapping/Trafficking" Area? No

Are we practising the same type of democracy being practised in Europe? No
Is the citizen of a black country equal to the citizen of a white country? No
Is a black man equal to a white man? No

Obasanjo is always selling us short

Did Obasanko not sign Bakassi away?
Now he went to a foreign country to plead that we should sign
In whose interest is he speaking
Nigeria or his foreign audience?

How can that affect the unemployment rate at alarming...positive or negative?

Negetaive in the short term. It ideally should be positive but we aren't ready for this yet because of our high cost of production (Power, Security , corruption etc). Once he signs this, all the remaining multinationals (PZ, Cadbury, Nestlé, Guiness etc) would pull out of Nigeria as fast as possible. Why produce here when you can from Kenya and export to Nigeria tax free. Millions of top paying quality jobs would be lost within 6 months. Then we'll be completely import dependent. Nigeria is attractive to all those countries because of our population. Possitive in the long term because we'll be forced to sit up and get our acts together to compete with other African countries.

It baffles me when people allow the hatred for a person to cover their objective mind when a decision of national importance is being taken. Free trade can not benefit a crawling economy like Nigeria. The Manufacturing Sector is seriously suffering. Nigeria, being a negative net export country will suffer more if Buhari should consent to this agreement. With this, Nigeria will keep importing goods because you will not have right to close your border against the foreign products.

Thats the agreement where every country is given a limited sales quota.
Following the EU trade agreement and UK....You'll note how its one of the contentious issues the UK is battling with and trying to extricate itself from....For example, local Fishermen are given fixed quotas or not allowed to fish in local waters due to the trade agreements in the UK. So after UK removes itself, it plans to arrange it's own individual trade deals with other countries.

I suppose it's got it benefits....An analogy will be the case of quota system in Nigerian states...where University of Ibadan admission is based on quota system rather than merit....So, maybe Obasanjo doesn't know what he's saying

only wise decision our incompetent president made in a long while.

A free trade zone across the African continent will hurt Nigeria's manufacturing industry with the high cost of production in Nigeria owing to lack of electricity.

We already import serviettes , toothpick and toilet papers, what happens when we open our doors to all of Africa?

With a population of almost 200 million, Nigeria will be the chief destination of every country in the continent.
