The mystery of the female orgasm has baffled men for years and up to one in three ladies still struggle to reach the big-O.

But new research reveals woman can have different types of orgasm throughout their lives, which may explained why so many are left unsatisfied in bed.

Shockingly 91% of men reach the big-O while having sex, compared to just 64% of women, according to the National Survey of Sex and Behaviour – and this needs to change.

The key to pleasuring women has been hugely debated. Some experts claim it's all about clitoral stimulation, while others say MouthAction is the best way to satisfy a woman.

One bizarre study even claimed anal sex was the most reliable way to make a woman orgasm, with 94% saying they reached climax this way.

But a brand new review has looked extensively into the topic and found women's orgasms can come from a vast variety of sources.

These include arousal of the external clitoral glans, the internal region around the center of gravity, the cervix and even non-genital areas such as the nipples or toes.

Professor Jim Pfaus, a psychologist at Concordia University in Montreal, said: "Of all the orgasms on Earth, none are more mysterious than those in females.

"What do women get out of them? Can all women have them? And the most mysterious of all - what produces them?"

Unlike men – who always get turned on in the same way – a woman's erotic body map "is an ongoing process", he said.

So what she liked yesterday may not be what she wants tomorrow.

Prof Pfaus said: "With experience stimulation of one or all of these triggering zones are integrated into a 'whole' set of sensory inputs, movements, body positions, arousals and cues related to context.

"That combination of sensory input is what reliably induces pleasure and orgasm during masturbation and intercourse.

"That said we think it's likely this changes across the lifespan - as women experience different kinds of orgasms from different types of sensations in different contexts and with different partners."

The study published in Socioaffective Neuroscience & Psychology could explain why one-in-three women say they struggle to achieve orgasms through sexual intercourse.

It explains the distinction between different orgasms is not between sensations of the external clitoris and internal vagina - but between levels of what a woman understands a 'whole' orgasm to be.

This depends firstly on her experience with direct stimulation of the external clitoris, internal clitoris and cervix.

But it also relates to knowledge of the arousing and erotic cues that predict orgasm, knowledge of her own pattern of movements that lead to it and experience with stimulation of multiple external and internal genital and non-genital sites.

Prof Pfaus said: "Orgasms don't have to come from one site - nor from all sites.

"And they don't have to be the same for every woman nor for every sexual experience even in the same woman to be whole and valid."

He hopes the study will highlight the fact that the female orgasm is not simply a different version of the reproductive model of male ejaculation.

"Unlike men, women can have a remarkable variety of orgasmic experiences which evolve throughout the lifespan," he said.

"A woman's erotic body map is not etched in stone, but rather is an ongoing process of experience, discovery and construction."
