Before his ascendancy to power, Nigerians were not used to seeing this trait in their former leaders. What IBB feared the most back then was the possibility of toppling his government by his soldiers that was why he was always reshuffling positions, retiring officers, sending them abroad on courses or peace keeping operations or giving some juicy contracts and killing some mysteriously. IBB feared his rank and file more than he could fear any criminal gang. He feared Mamman Vasta and Sani Abacha the most.

Anini killed more police, snatched car from Assistant inspector general of police Christopher Omeben, killed his driver, attack and nearly killed state commissioner of police, he robbed more banks than any one in Nigeria history, had biggest robbers as at the time working under him . Even Babangida feared him with the dare way anini operates. I will accept Oyenusi has more juju and often disappeared according to history.

I know this topic is old but let me still add something.
Neither Anini nor Oyenusi were particularly brilliant in armed robbery. Both were actually only good stealing vehicles, with Anini being an expert driver too.

Their fame arose from our knack of believing in superstition and juju PLUS poor investigative resources of the police then.

I know a couple of people/CID involved in Anini case.

Their intel was thoroughly flood. Pictures purported to be of Anini clearly were not.

Other armed robbers were also operating at the time and were blamed on Anini gang.

Killing of policemen only began after police collected bribe money but refused to release Anini gang member, Kingsley Eweka. That infuriated Anini & Osunbor. But maybe considering how hot things were, the matter was already beyond the police to manipulate and release him. But Anini & Osunbor felt betrayed anyway.

Even the shooting of PC Akagbosu was a mistake. Osunbor confirmed that. He said while he had no qualms killing policemen pursuing him, he had no need shooting Akagbosu who was just passing by in his convoy.

I was very disappointed to listen to Anini's chat with new PC Parry Osayande on radio. He was very imbecilic. Nothing like the hype the media made us to believe.
