PRESS RELEASE

TROOPS COUNTER BOKO HARAM IN BILLE SHUWA

Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole deployed in the Cashew Plantation around Bille Shuwa and Alikaranti villages have quashed an attempt by Boko Haram terrorists to penetrate Maiduguri metropolis yesterday at about 8.10 pm. The insurgents met with stiff resistance of troops who killed 6 of the insurgents and neutralised 7 suicide bombers in the encounter. The troops also recovered 2 AK 47 rifles and 2 Magazines. The Nigerian Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team have detonated two IED vests recovered from the killed suicide bombers Beaten by the troops and unable to force their way into the metropolis, the insurgents retreated and callously resorted to attacking locals who, reacting to the encounter were fleeing in confusion from Bille Shuwa and Alkaranti villages with Person Borne Improvised Explosive Device.

Sadly, 15 persons including a soldier have so far been confirmed dead in the encounter, while about 83 persons who suffered varying degrees of injuries are receiving due medical attention. Troops are still on the trail of the insurgents. More details will be communicated as further clarifications are made.

Meanwhile, a 14 year old Boko Haram insurgent Rawa Babagana has surrendered to troops of Operation Lafiya Dole. The insurgent escaped from the Boko Haram enclave in Kekeno in the northern fringes of the Lake Chad Islands. He is currently been profiled.

It is clear that the remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists are hell bent on remaining relevant by attacking soft and vulnerable targets and therefore calls for collective vigilance by all security stakeholders and members of the public. Members of the general public are therefore urged to be watchful and discern strange persons and suspicious activities in their communities and report to the security agencies.

Please disseminate this information to the general public through your news media.

Thank you for your usual cooperation.

NIGERIAN ARMY EXTENDS EXERCISE AYEM AKPATUMA FOR TWO MONTHS IN TARABA STATE

You will all recall that exercise AYEM AKPATUMA was flagged off on 20th February, 2018 to Practice troops in North Central and parts of North West on planning and conduct of 'Military Operations Other Than War'. The exercise was also aimed at further sustaining Nigerian Army’s constitutional roles of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria as well as aiding the civil authority to maintain peace and security. Exercise AYEM AKPATUMA has recorded tremendous successes in spite of challenges. However, the exercise needs to be sustained in some areas in other to consolidate on the initial gains.

In view of the development, the ongoing exercise AYEM AKPATUMA in Taraba State has been extended for 2 months. The extention becomes necessary in order to further consolidate on the gains achieved so far and due to calls by well-meaning Nigerians. The extension would facilitate the Nigerian Army’s effort of ridding the affected areas of militants and other criminal elements.

The general public, particularly residents of Taraba State are therefore requested to cooperate with the troops by giving useful and timely information to enable them carry out their constitutional duties effectively.

You are please requested to disseminate this information to the general public through your medium.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Turkey, Nigeria sign wide-reaching military training agreement

Turkey and Nigeria have signed an agreement in the field of military training, the Turkish government's Official Gazette announced Monday.

The two countries will be cooperating in the field of military training and mechanism as part of the agreement signed in Turkey's capital Ankara.

The cooperation will be extended to sectors of business cooperation, peacekeeping supports, fight against piracy, institutionalized training, delegations and personnel exchanges, humanitarian aid and more.

The two parties will also cooperate in promoting and archiving military history, museum establishments and exchange of information concerning military education.

The agreement will enable the two countries to train submarine officers, petty officers and international divers. Special courses will be given on ways to search planted explosives, operating advanced explosive devices, and similar subjects.

Turkey and Nigeria have continued to develop political and economic ties. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Complex in Ankara last November, where the two leaders discussed bilateral and international issues ranging from education to anti-terrorism efforts against Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ).

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE DEPLOYS SPECIAL FORCES TO GUSAU

Following the recent attack on Bawan Daji community in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State where some lives were lost, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, directed that Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Special Forces be deployed to Gusau, as part of efforts to stop the incessant banditry attacks. Accordingly, the NAF Special Forces, who were trained in asymmetric warfare, were airlifted from Kaduna with the NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft to complement the efforts of other security forces on ground to prevent further attack on innocent citizens. The personnel and other supporting staff would operate from the recently established 207 Quick Response Group in Gusau, where they would reinforce the existing Regiment personnel in the Unit in support of the ongoing Operation SHARAN DAJI in the State.

In his address to the troops at Gusau shortly before their deployment earlier today, 3 April 2018, the Air Officer Commanding Special Operations Command, Air Vice Marshal Ismaila Kaita, announced that the Special Forces would be further deployed to remote areas of Zamfara State, where they would be engaged in Internal Security operations. He therefore further urged them to effectively utilize their experience and training to protect the lives and properties of the people of Zamfara State. He added that the NAF leadership expects the Special Forces to exhibit the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human rights in discharging their duties.

In recent times, the NAF has taken additional measures to enhance its contributions to tackling Internal Security challenges in the country, in fulfilment of its constitutional responsibility. In addition to earlier established Quick Response Groups and Wings and the deployment of NAF Special Forces to various states, the NAF recently established Quick Response Wings at Agatu, Doma and Nguroje in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba States respectively to bring security closer to those in the relatively remote areas. Arrangements are also ongoing to establish a new Quick Response Group in Jalingo, Taraba State to superintend the activities of the 3 new Quick Response Wings.
