According to data compiled from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), 738 Japanese companies were registered in Africa by 2017.

Almost half of the companies are based in Southern Africa (354) with South Africa accounting for just under 40% of all Japanese companies on the continent.

The companies operate either as wholly owned subsidiaries, in partnership with local African companies, or as third parties in alliance with other foreign firms, particularly from Asia or Europe.

Data from a 2017 JETRO survey, covering 315 of the registered Japanese companies, shows that 27% are categorized as manufacturers. Approximately a quarter employs more than 51 staff, while the majority employ 50 or less.

Positive profit forecasts trend upwards when comparing 2017 to 2018, with the proportion of companies expecting an increase in profits up by 12 percentage points while those expecting lower profits fell by 16 percentage points.
