Who were the Sadducees? What is a Pharisee? Why was there so much conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees?

Pharisees are those that can see far.

Scribes are the writers among them.

Sadducees are the sad looking ones.

Why couldn't the 'Far-to-see' not see that it was predicted in the OT that the Messiah was to die for the sins of the whole world?

Because the Pharisees believed in the old covenant and never understood the move of God in the last days. They expected to see a messiah who will rule an earthly kingdom and destroy all their enemies including the gentiles.

The Pharisees and Sadducees were (or are) the 'Elders' of the church, the 'Deacons' and the 'School of Theology' graduates graduates and professors who know the Bible in and out, and probably read the Bible back to back twice a year. They quote the scripture off heart but in the true sense, do not really know what they are quoting, because they lack the understanding that comes with having the Holy Spirit.
