There seem to be no consistent practice to this sand filling thing. tends to change depending on who you speak to, even the Engr/builders sometimes have different opinions. Trying to sand fill a location for a project starting soon, max 3months, so they recommend sharp sand due to the short time. Then I find out there’s different sharp sand. Questions: (A) Can we use the white “sharp” sand being reclaimed from dredging activities? Since this may likely come cheaper, any downside? Will same settling be achieved with compaction? (B) the other coloured coarse sharp sand. Is it true this soaks more water and therefore will require less volume to fill same area when compared to (a) above? (C) Can both types of sharp sand be mixed? Can we use a combination of both? Any effect? Since I understand sometimes clients can’t even tell the difference anyway, so might be happening a lot. One thing I’ve agreed on is that the red filling sand is not an option due to the short period, but I’ll like clarity on the sharp sand characteristics and suitability. Foundation type is Pile. Wrong thread... [s]Headline inflation drops for 14th consecutive month... this will continue to put pressure on T-Bill rates; coupled with the fact that CBN is only rolling over a portion of maturing issuances. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) which measures inflation increased by 13.34 percent (year-on-year) in March 2018. This fourteenth consecutive disinflation since January 2017 is 0.99 percent points less than the rate recorded in February 2018 (14.33) percent. Increases were recorded in all COICOP divisions that yield the Headline Index. On a month-on-month basis, the Headline index increased by 0.84 percent in March 2018, up by 0.05 percent points from the rate recorded in February. The percentage change in the average composite CPI for the twelve month period ending March 2018 over the average of the CPI for the previous twelve month period was 15.60 percent, showing 0.33 percent point lower from 15.93 percent recorded in February 2018. The Urban inflation rate eased by 13.75 percent (year-on-year) in March 2018 from 14.76 percent recorded in February, while the Rural inflation rate also eased by 12.99 percent in March 2018 from 13.96 percent in February. Rubbiish: I will support 1: 3: 6 too well client could use any other mix ratio Meaning 2 headpans of cement 6 headpans of fine aggregates 12 headpans of coarse aggregates Provided headpans are still new and the content weighs 25kg. 2 Likes |

nothing but hearsay, so yeah that may just be another myth that should be substantiated or dumped. however, the difference with that one is that a few professionals seem to allude to that. so i can easily believe that. do you reckon the red filling sand will suffice in this case? megacontrol: Foundation is a very critical stage of building and I wouldn't dare to profess an opinion to be followed as I am just a layperson. However, I used laterite on my build, about 300 tons, but I built up the layers over a period of 18 months (I have the time because retirement is still a few years away). I will be watching responses from astute and demonstrated builders like Aventures, AbdulWastecx, Skimanski, Darenyx, RichYoungRuler, Spyder880 because it's a subject that I'm most interested in. |

koolengrtimmy: If I may. Security: Since we're talking about internal partitions then security is not the greatest need. Wood partition can never equal block in terms of physical strength. Fire Rating: For areas that need firewall such as kitchen and attached garages, wood partitions are covered with fire-resistant drywall. The wood is never directly exposed to fire at any time. Ease Of Finish: After applying drywall then they are both equal. |

EgunMogaji: Good morning Oga, there's nothing wrong with filling a foundation with laterite sand, but the right compaction methods must be employed to sink in the soil into all foundation crevices while achieving a compaction method which must ensure that the filling is strong enough to support the floor. Compaction of laterite filling should be done in stages, every 300mm thickness. Problem comes when people are in a hurry, and so ignore the right compaction methods. I am happy you left your filling for some time to sink better. On the other hand, the white sharp sand which are got from the rivers serve as a better filling material. The cleaner the sand, the better. The filling sand could be coarse too. This material may not sink much under compaction but fills in more crevices and bears much more weight. The other type of sharp sand he mentioned is not clear to me, so I prefer river sharp sand. I also know that the right materials and right procedures are most times contained in the building plans, which are site specific. The guy who prepares the building plans should visit the site and pass recommendation on the right materials and process, including type of filling sand. 1 Like |

koolengrtimmy:Security is out of the questions as external walls are all made of materials strong enough. As for fire u have enough fire resistant paint sprays etc . Then these panels are much easier to finish in that they can be prefabricated to a satisfying level and installed. The major determinant is cost and technical know how |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Dominionng(m): 2:15pm On Apr 13, 2018 |
bixton: Oh! Of course there is a logical reason sir. When wall tiles is fixed before POP ceiling, then you need to break the tiles above the ceiling line, or at least all the points where the POP mesh will meet the wall. And with that, there is a high chance of cracked tiles below the ceiling line. So, why waste money, time and energy when you can have your tiles neatly done after your POP ceiling. 5 Likes |
