The following weekend after my stay at Karen’s crib was the first time I met her besties in person. So far it had been glimpses from a distance and a mention here and there. And according to Karen, she don make mouth about how fine I was to them as my head don swell tire, so I began to look forward to meeting them.

Since I got to her place, my vain self made sure I was all dressed up so as to not disappoint, taking painstaking time to shave and prim everyday since Karen told me they were visiting… but the idiots kept dragging feet until I grew tired of waiting and relaxed…to be tushing up everyday can be hard work at times.
Unfortunately at that period, they decided to come over and I am sorry to say that they met me at my worst.

That day, I had just taken my second helping from a bowl of pap, the akara oil all over my mouth like that of an irresponsible child, my stomach bulged with overdosed eko to the point of near bursting, it was there that Karen and her friends, two ladies and a dude came in to and met me fanning myself with my top, trying unsuccessfully to ease myself into a comfortable position to adjust my stiff tommy.

That was a bad start to making a first impression. Shame no gree me talk well when Karen introduced them. The guy's name was Jude, all tall, immaculate and clean I disliked him on the spot, and the way his mouth curled up in amusement as he glanced down at my pot belly wasn’t helping his case in the friendship department at all. Why today of all days, I cursed under my breath as I tried to salvage a little bit of dignity cos I just be like Karen's arrant houseboy standing before them. on a normal day with my abs and sixpacs, today has to be the day they showed up.
The first chic Karen introduced as Valerie wrinkled her nose down at me in distaste as if I reek of akara oil, the other chic Precious’s expression wasn’t any better either as both of them literally sniffed their greetings, flounced by me to settle down without another word. Luckily they ignored me after that I was able to slink away into the bedroom to hideout until they had left, I’ve never felt so ashamed of in my life.

To my chagrin, Karen whom I was expecting to be angry at me for embarrassing her in front of her friends simply shrugged off my concerns in amusement. Her words; they don’t see you like I do, they saw you at your worst and simply judged you on the spot, all the better for me cos I need not worry about my babes snatching my ugly boyfriend.

Anyway I don’t blame her, if I had walked up to her like that the first day we met I had no doubt she would have made sure she make me regret the day I was born.

It took me a while getting over my bruised pride, I made sure I was going to let them know I don’t give a hoot about them the next time they showed up, return their cold greetings with ice block greetings of my own and ignored them until they were gone.

One weekend, Karen told me about a pool party a friend of hers was hosting, because of a certain memory about the last pool party I went to, I bid her farewell and hope she had a good time.

“What do you mean, have a good time? Boy you’re coming with me.” She said with a finality that bordered on no further arguments.

Sometimes I don’t know if I had to remind her that my mother was still hale and hearty and her postion wasn’t vacant to be bossing me about. I’m a grown man who need not do what he doesn’t want to do so I agreed to go with her to the party not because I want to but because she made me….grown man in a relationship my ass.

On a normal day, yunno those folks can be proud to a point of annoyance cos I don’t know whether it’s the fact that they believed themselves superior to the other departments or the black and white attires they strut around in that makes them look like casket undertakers to me. But believe it or not, the ajebutter law students from private unis are the worst and I was unfortunate to be accompanying my ajebutter law student girlfriend to a party full of them…Irony Ayee!!
Like the classic Karen that she was, she waltz into the party already in full swing getting the attention she craved as everyone’s eye’s followed her in as she held on to my arms like a queen in court…what a drama queen.

In the blink of an eye we were soon swamped by her friends and admirers. Jude strolled over, as sleek and immaculate as ever(the tall bastard) both Precious and Valerie hanging on his arms. He recognized me on the spot with a mild nod of his ororo oiled head, and a raised eyebrow to acknowledge how different I look compared to the first time meeting. His companions on the other hand must have attached my look to the pap filled pot bellied mongrel they saw a few weeks before cos they did not know who I was.
