1. As we are now aware, some Senators were against the inclusion of Section 25 in The Amended Constitution. This section would move or “stagger” the Presidential election from the first day to the very last on the line. 10 Senators spoke up against the constitutionality of adding this section. Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was one of them. The President vetoed The intended Amendment. The Senate Leadership decided it would override the veto. Under the constitution, 2/3 (72) votes are needed to override a presidential veto. So, like in every Congress or House of Parliament, lobbying of members to support a position commenced. The group that were against the reordering of elections (referred to as the ‘pro-Buhari group) needed 36+ votes to prevent the override. They were able to convince about 39 more Senators to join them. This would give them 59 signatures. However, 2 pro- Buhari Senators died within 2 weeks, reducing the number to 57. Sen. Omo-Agege did most of the lobbying. He went from Senator to Senator to discuss, reason with, and finally convince them to block the override. 2. Sen. Omo-Agege was now viewed as a threat to the “establishment”. Thus, even after he tendered a “courtesy” apology to his colleagues, Sen. Dino Melaye who had physically threatened him that he would tear into pieces the list of signatures he was collating, decided along with just 6 PDP committee members to Suspend Sen. Omo-Agege for 180 days even after it was internally resolved among members that the apology was accepted. Getting wind of this, Sen. Omo-Agege, also a seasoned lawyer was advised to immediately file a suit in court to address the matter. 3. Sen. Omo-Agege appeared before the Committee and advised them of the lawsuit. 4. Sen. Omo-Agege was summarily suspended by the decision of 6-7 Senators. 5. Two days later, last Saturday, Sen. Omo-Agege’s home was gutted by fire. This would prevent the ‘pro-Buhari’ Senators meeting vs that were usually held openly at that residence. 6. By Monday, various groups, significant among them, the Delta State APC and the “Urhobo Nation” nationally rejected the suspension of their Senator. Renown legal luminaries also condemned the suspension on Constitutional grounds. Since there was a legal precedent on the issue, Sen. Omo-Agege was advised to resume his duty in the Senate. 7. Yesterday in the Senate, the efforts of Sen. Omo-Agege and the pro- Buhari group paid off. They had more than enough Senators who joined them to stop the override of Mr. President’s veto. They won. 8. Yesterday also, there was a mishap during the Senate Plenary. When Sen. Omo-Agege went to the Senate to seat in Plenary, he was blocked at the entrance. This resulted in an altercation with 4 of his employers who accompanied him and made sure he gained entrance into the chambers. He greeted his colleagues and sat down in the chambers. 9. Not too long after Sen. Omo-Agege sat down, some hoodlums came into the floor of the plenary, walked up to the high Chambers and took away the Mace. 10. Some Senators instantly accused Sen. Omo-Agege of “leading thugs to steal” the Mace. lalasticlala
