Not everyone who studies medicine makes an excellent doctor. Many view medicine only from the academic perspective. Some manage on completion to leave Nigeria and come here and this is when they realise there is more to medicine than being an academic . I have seen many struggle with the concept of bedside manners. You are not an island you work as a team abroad no one cares which tribe you come from and team work is alien to some. Some end up being struck off for very basic things. I saw a post about career guidance counselling in schools and that is an excellent idea. We all can’t be engineers and doctors and most don’t last in that career. 5 Likes |

That's the reality but not the complete truth - it depends on your perspective - that the medical profession is what it is now in Nigeria does not say that those aspiring to study the course should be discouraged - Medicine is a noble profession in the world over it's just quite unfortunate that it has become denigrated in Nigeria - Let our opinions be guided by reason not sentiments. Just finding reasons to comment. Well, my take is this, the idea of studying medicine is misconstrued. A medical doctor is well respected not Becos of the money he has but Becos he is like God- has the ability to make u "whole " if u are sick, and this is why they are well respected. But the Nigerian greed mentality has reduced the profession to a money making Avenue and that is why every Nigerian parent wants to train a doctor by all means. If u're looking for money please go into business dnt study medicine, and at this juncture, I dare to say that a lawyer (SAN) who has reached the peak of his career is richer than a doctor of same standing. 3 Likes |

CandidNotes:very candid indeed... band of failures, like if any other profession on the average is doing any better in Nigeria, NYSC is the usual eye opener of what is to come. Most people have great expectations of medicine and think you are ordained with an endless bag of money buried in a pit behind your house when you graduate from medical school which is unfortunate Medicine has its goods and bad sides, the business side and the slave side depending on your level and hustle but generally it moulds character and makes you more calm, analytical, critical and patient, qualities that if channeled properly can lead to success in other spheres when you realize that just working and working for accolades is a bad deal in the end. all in all, it is a good economic decision to read medicine... you are always in the middle, you can go up... but you can never crawl down there for too long, unemployment rate is low in medicine 7 Likes 1 Share |

Many doctors know the profession is not as lucrative as hyped about initio. It is not surprising to notice that most doctors are now entering into Politics. That's the koko in Nigeria now!!! 2 Likes |

eleojo23: Thank you, help me tell them. Your degree from UNN or Unilag matters less here. Even a medical degree from the WHO accredited med school my university runs doesn't guarantee millions in your almighty Canada. You'll still sit for exams that are so expensive to even register for. Seriously, I feel for my friends studying medical courses in Nigeria. If the fuel is truly not from within, the fire may go out too soon. It's frustrating and annoying. Someone with a jamb score 70 points lower than mine got admitted to study med in a fed uni in Nigeria and I wasn't even offered horticulture. |

organism3: Lol.... no. Far from that. These guys are like brothers to me. The stress, annoying lecturers and harsh learning conditions is really discouraging. They tell me what they're going through and I know my problems are mere jokes compared to theirs. I just feel for them because after surviving all these, they'd still have to go through about 3-4 years of internship, NYSC torture and all that. The system is really discouraging. 1 Like |

Pharmacy is worse. They earn far less than doctors in hospitals, and only a few find jobs there. Most are mere chemist owners (if they can afford to start chemist shops) or they work for uneducated chemist owners. How many pharmaceutical industries do we have in Nigeria and how many pharmacists work there? pxjosh: |

All courses in Nigeria are poo--not only medicine and surgery man. You can go ahead and study biochemistry and see what Nigeria will offer you--private school teacher earning 10k/month ... You can even steep low to study fishery and see maybe you'll be better of the doctor you are yelling about....same with other courses. Even the ones that study engineering, goan ask dem what they've got after graduating... The problem is not the masses that wanto study MBBS but Nigeria itself...Go to India, you'll see the worst--they can die because of engineering there! what is medicine wahala here compared to India engineering... bros forget... Find better course for Nigeria and be on the safer part than to, because of stress, study a course that no one will stimulate ur nose with even teaching job! All courses and all jobs in Nigeria are hazardous, annoying, stressful...No good payment self. Naija now, u study medicine oh, u no study medicine oh, na to get better head and favor or else you will rot in reality!!! Proud to be A Doctor. A. 3 Likes 1 Share |
