‘Nigerian public varsities graduates cannot compete with my secondary school students’

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has described graduates of Nigerian public universities as brainless, saying they cannot communicate in English with the students of his private secondary school, the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Academy.

Abubakar, who spoke on Thursday evening in Yola during his birthday celebration organised by the management of AUN, said public universities graduates cannot fit into private industries due to their poor education and character.

“I was in the University of Zik in Akwa in Anambra State on Wednesday on the invitation of the university. There is no student in public universities that can speak English in an error-free manner like the head boy of my secondary, who just finished addressing us now.

“When the head boy of AUN Academy, Abdullahi Sani, started speaking, I was thinking it is one of the lecturers in AUN, but only for him to introduce himself as the head boy of AUN Academy,” he stated.

This is unacceptable. Bringing the blunder made by atiku doesn't change the fact that PMB goofed full time. It also cannot deflect the significance of the statement Mr P made. Youths cannot express themselves, that's debatable. But saying youths are lazy. That's outrageous.


Truth is that internet doesn't not forget but the gravity of the matter here is very different.

Detractors trying to cover up or deflect the enormity of the matter at hand concerning the lazy youth have failed and should hide themselves in shame

As much as I do not like Atiku, I must say to a large extent that this thread is deceptive. One, the quoted speech never featured the word "brainless". Secondly, there are so many students in public higher institutions who can't speak proper English. People who do not know how to use "is, were,are,go,etc". Quite often when you hear some of them talk, you start wondering if they skipped nursery and primary schools, and if they never came across "Queen's premier" and "Brighter grammar" in their early days of schooling.

I did not hear the word *Lazy*.
He says with 60% of population too many are not educated and that is the root of false sense of entitlement that is my understanding. He was addressing critical problems against investment, he addressed security first and talked about how Boko Haram had destroyed the NE. Why are people not saying he demarketed the NE?.

If you watched this video and heard the word "lazy" go and get hearing aids. If you disagree with the president and the answer he gave to the question put to him (remember he is talking about impediments to investments he met) then i believe you are INSINCERE. if you have hosted a debate on this on your platform without actually listening to the speech and have run your mouth typically like a "know all" you are a big part of Nigeria's problem. If we look at the statement that Atiku made closely, we can see that there was no mention of brainless, besides, what he said was the truth. Most public school students struggle with spoken English language; many more still cannot write English properly.

Poor English language skills cannot diminish the brilliance of a mathematically gifted student. That much is the fact. Pushing this analogy further, from Buhari's point of view: The gifted student who wasn't helped a great deal to develop his English language skills is lazy. Buhari does not want to know what grade this math student finished with, he doesn't want to know that this Math grad has been looking for money and saving up so that he can go on to do graduate degrees... in Buhari's eyes, he lazy.
