EPISODE 37 (CHAPTER TWELVE) Same evening, while on his way home after seeing his father, Yemi called Yinka. Yinka had been out of the country on a business trip and just came back. “Yemiscoli Abruzzini!” Yinka’s voice filtered out of the earpiece. “Hello, buddy, where you at?” “Chilling at home.” “Yinka, we’ve got to talk.” “Okay. No problems. Shooters, usual time?” “Perfect.” “So, till then.” “Thanks, Yinka. Take care.” Same Day, Shooters Club & Bar, 7.15 p.m. Yemi and Yinka occupied their usual table. Yemi was moody and lack the appetite for his regular beer so he made do with water. Yinka ordered for his usual--Gulder. “Yemiscoli Abruzzini!” Yinka began. “Mehn, why are you wearing such a forlorn look? Common on, cheer up. You can’t be in the presence of Guuuulder and be moody as if you just screwed up a deal.” “Yinka, it would have been better if I messed up a deal. I broke up with Simisola.” “Oh! Is that why you’ve been fraternizing with alcohol lately like I was told?” He poked Yemi and laughed. “It would have been nice if it was Gulder you were romancing,” he teased. “Yinka, why can’t you be serious for once? It’s my life we are talking about here, you know.” “I know buddy. I just want to cheer you up a bit. I don’t like the look on your face. So, what happened?” “Simisola cheated on me. She was caught in the act.” “Simisola? Cheated on you? Caught in the act? No, no. That can’t be possible. Definitely not the Simisola I know.” “You think I’m lying?” He dropped the envelope on the table. “Check those out!” Yinka picked up the pictures. He studied them one after another. His gazed focused. His demeanour still. “What was her reaction when you confronted her?” he asked without taking his eyes off the pictures. “She acted like she didn’t understand what was happening. Like she was seeing it for the first time. That’s the most annoying part of it--the pretence! God!” he answered with disgust. A slow smile gradually built over Yinka’s lips. “She didn’t do it!” he stated with firm conviction. To be continued ... Watch Out for the Next Episode! NB: The book is NOW AVAILABLE on online stores. EPISODE 38 (CHAPTER TWELVE) “What did you mean she didn’t do it? Aren’t those pictures enough proof?” Yemi asked aghast. “And if you are thinking Photoshop, I won’t buy that.” “Exactly my point. Interestingly, these pictures prove she didn’t do it!” He raised his head for the first time since he began looking at the pictures. “Come and see this.” Yemi hurriedly dragged his seat close to Yemi’s and both heads locked over the pictures. Yemi spread them on the table. “See these ones ...” He drew Yemi’s attention to the first three pictures. “Can you see that Simisola’s eyes are drooping?” Yemi nodded. “Good. Now, look at these ...” He dragged the fourth and fifth pictures to the centre with his index finger. “Do you notice that the eyes are shut?” Yemi nodded again. Yinka continued, “That means she was either drowsy or tipsy when these pictures were taken.” “Okay.” Yemi concurred. His eyes narrowed as he listened attentively to Yinka who continued his analysis of the pictures like a forensic scientist examining a crime scene. “Now look at the expression on her face. That smile is not natural; it’s forced. Also look at the position of the arms, the way they are hanging. That shows that she didn’t have full control of them probably as a result of falling asleep or feeling squiffy.” “Wow!” Yemi’s mouth opened wide. “Now look at him.” Yinka shifted his focus to the man in the photographs. “Look at that smile ...” “Yeah. What about it?” “Yemiscoli, look closely.” Yemi lean forward. He almost buried his face into the pictures. “That smile is not one of someone having fun. Look at the shape of his mouth. It’s a sinister smile. It’s a smile of someone satisfied that he just completed a task.” Yemi jerked backwards. His stare fixed on Yinka. The expression was full of awe for his friend. It was as if Yinka had suddenly turned into a magician. “Yinka, you are a genius!” “Yemi, this is a set up. She was drugged!” Yinka concluded. Yemi sank into his seat. “But who could have done this?” Yemi asked with confusion. Yinka looked at the photographs once more rubbing his chin with his thumb and index finger. His eyes squeezed and suddenly flung wide open. “Yes!” he exclaimed. “Those look familiar.” Yemi sprang to his feet to get a better view of what Yinka just discovered. “What looked familiar?” Yinka continued, “That painting hanging on the wall in the background and that vase on that stool beside the bed. I’ve seen them somewhere before.” “Really?” “Yeah! But I can’t just remember where.” He thought hard. “Where? Where? Where?” He tapped his forehead with his index finger repeatedly trying hard to remember. Yemi watched his friend. “Do you need a bottle of Gulder?” “For what now, Yemi? I’m trying to concentrate here.” “Maybe it will jolt your memory.” “Hahahaha!” Yinka laughed. “But I am trying to ...” He suddenly paused. “Oh, yes!” He got up and began to run. “Where to?” Yemi called after him. “To my car. I will be back shortly,” he called out back without slowing down a bit. In no time, he came back with a flyer. It was a flyer some boys tucked into his car in traffic sometime ago. It advertised a newly opened two star hotel with space for parties, conferences amongst others. The flyer had photographs of the hotel’s facilities and one of them was the particular room where Simisola’s photographs were taken, showing the same wall painting and vase Yinka spotted in the pictures. “Purple Square Hotel?” Yemi’s voice pitched high. “That was the venue of the party Simisola got an invite to the day before I got the pictures.” “Pretty. We now have where to start from.” Yemi threw his arms round Yinka and the two of them were locked in a warm embrace. “Thank you, mehn.” Yemi patted Yinka’s back. “You are a wizard! I don’t know why you aren’t working with the State Security Service as a crime investigator? You’ve made my day, bro.” As if Yemi suddenly remembered something, he let go of Yinka and reached for his phone. Yinka watched as his fingers danced furiously on the keypad. “Who are you calling?” Yinka asked. “Simisola of course. Who else should it be?” The number was switched off. Impatiently, he tucked the phone into his pocket and started running to his car. “Where to, bro?” “To go find my Jewel.” “But it’s getting late already, dude.” “Whatever!” “Then wait for me. We started this together and we must finish it together.” To be continued ... Watch Out for the Next Episode! NB: The book is NOW AVAILABLE on online stores. EPISODE 39 (CHAPTER THIRTEEN) IT WAS A TIME of the year that Pink Roses usually closed very late due to huge influx of customers as it was during the festive season. Yemi screeched to a halt in front of Pink Roses startling everyone. He ran into the salon with beads of sweat decorating his forehead. Yinka came behind him. A look of regret took over his face. He explained his discoveries to Auntie Funmi and Ngozi. He rued over the fact that he did not believe Simisola when she said she was innocent. He asked of Simisola and both Auntie Funmi and Ngozi suddenly grew silent. He was alarmed. His glance oscillated between the two women in quick successions but they avoided contact with his eyes. He became impatient. “No, no. Please tell me what’s wrong. Has anything happened to my Simisola?” Auntie Funmi sighed deeply. She turned to Ngozi. “Show him, Omo Ibo.” “Show me what ... Show me what?” Yemi stretched in his seat. He almost ripped his shirt apart. Ngozi called up Simisola’s last text message and showed it to Yemi. By the time he read up to the point where she said she loved him, he couldn’t control the tears that followed. Auntie Funmi had never seen a grown up man cried like that before. Even Yinka had never seen his bosom friend that pitiable before. Yinka had a hard time consoling him. That was the day Yinka witnessed in a practical way the extent of Yemi’s love for Simisola. Yemi kept on blaming and cursing himself for causing her so much pain. His pains increased when he found out that no one knew where she left to. “Has anyone been able to reach her parents?” Yinka asked. “No,” Ngozi answered. “Her parents are in the village. None of us know where the village is and unfortunately, we do not have their phone numbers.” Auntie Funmi added. “They live in Ajele Village. Simisola and I had been there once. I think I should still be able to locate it.” Yemi explained. His mind flashed back to the day he and Simisola made the trip. It was such a long journey that Yemi felt like he was traveling to heaven. He couldn’t forget the pain the mosquitoes inflicted on him as they had to spend the night over. But now was not the time to think about length of the journey or the merciless mosquitoes. Rather, it was time to think of how to get his Simisola back. He felt like jumping onto the road and headed for Ajele Village immediately but he checked the time and he realized it was too late. He was sure Simisola would be with her parents in the village. Early the following morning, Yemi was throttling at 160 Kilometres per hour on Lagos-Ibadan express road enroute Ajele Village. Yinka, strapped to the seat beside him, cautioned him to reduce his speed but he would have flown if he could instead. To him, every second counted and there was no time for delay. By the next time Yinka checked the speedometer, it was hitting 180 KM/H. At that point, it was as if the vehicle was floating on the ground and Yinka knew that the slightest mistake could send them to an early grave but Yemi seemed not to mind. All he wanted was to get to Ajele as quickly as possible and set his eyes on his Jewel. A couple of minutes later, they had cleared a considerable mileage. Yemi took a sidelong view of Yinka and laughed at the expression on Yinka’s face. He knew Yinka was silently praying to God to take over the wheels. “Yinkus, the Aristotle,” He laughed again. “Why are you looking as if you’re being accosted by demons?” Yinka said nothing. Then Yemi turned his head to have a better view of his face. Then it happened! Yinka was the first to see it so he called out, “Watch out, Yemi!” “Jeeeeezzzzz!” Yemi screamed the moment he turned his attention back to the road. To be continued ...
