aribisala0: India has a population of 1.2 Billion. That is more than the whole of Africa. Nigeria's population according to the latest etimates is 200 million. Do the math and you'll see how wrong you are. |

yazach: You have to understand that these countries don't have tribal languages like us in Africa . yes the mother tough is best . if so then the Igbo's , Yoruba's and others will learn with there own mother tough . this will cause confusion in a country that is suppose to unite. English is that unity language, it is like that for many countries. The hauses if you know them are nonchalance and reluctant to learn English because it is a western language they prefer Arabic . it is this way in many Muslim countries . I can't tell you why they hate western culture . but its mostly a thing of religion, they believe that if they learn English they are giving in to Christianity. P.s . Arabic is foreign language but an hause man will learn it will JOY. 1 Like |

A lot of things are wrong in the planning and execution of the language teaching programmes and the national policy on education in Nigeria. What is happening in the north also takes place in the south south and south east. In the south west some teachers incorporate Yoruba into English language teaching too pls note that it is not bad if mother tonque is sparingly used in teaching English in the lower level of education but not as a medium of communication in the English language class. Many Nigerian teachers know nothing about roles assigned languages in Nigeria while our National policy on education has become a toothless dog even in our educational sector. As a result our mother tonques are dying at the expense of English. |

OGHENAOGIE: No matter what methodology is applied, the logistics of picking a certain number of languages from out of 400 different ones, then translating millions of pages of official documents into those languages is simply going to be a huge and unnecessary waste of time and money. And who gets to determine which languages are "predominant" in a specific area? Won't their be a tendency for certain groups to be marginalised in the long run and for some languages to simply disappear? We're better off as we are now with an internationally recognised official language which makes us fit better into the modern world. |

J2381:bro, you ever googled Nigeria's literacy level and compare against other African countries? As a Southerner, you will swear, the stats and figures are doctored....well, until you visit the North. |

aribisala0: The fractions of dividing a country like Nigeria into twenty smaller units are mathmatically right. I can't fault you on those grounds. But if you look beyond the arithmetics, the reality of how functional those countries will be is something else entirely. |
Re: "They Use Hausa To Teach English Language In The North" - Kano Corper Claims by aribisala0(m): 2:46pm On Apr 27, 2018 |
Onechancearmy:You said I was wrong . So what am I wrong on? You were right but so was I . You cannot insst on your own reality. The fact is that Nigeria has the population of 20 actual real countries combined It is not "mathematical" but actual and factual right here on our doorstep in Africa. Is it population that makes a country functional? How "functional" is Nigeria? |

OGHENAOGIE: If its this way , well good luck on getting an hause man to learn igbo vise vaser. We are multi cultural and if we make every 300 some languages official it will cause confusion and Nigeria can't unite that way. English language is the best intermediate language we can use to communicate with each other and have no problem of any tribe language superiority issues. |

aribisala0: Population is one of the factors that make a country funtional, but it is by no means the only one. What I'm saying is that if you divide Nigeria into 20 countries, you'll only end up with 20 Somalias or Haitis or Afghanistans. I think the maximum number of solvent nations that can emerge from out of the Nigerian contraption is 5. |

Nnemuka: I served in Kano state polytechnic. All they said here are true. Even i kano state polytechnic, they use hausa to teach english courses like public administration, etc. That it didn't happen in your school doesnt mean that it doesnt happen else where. While we were serving, a femail friend of mine who served in one FGC in bauchi state encoutered the same thing. so, what are you saying? |

yazach: You just insult people when they reason far superior to you. That's just childish. He made absolutely valid, and salient points. English language is what unites this country, and the universe to a large extent. This is part of the reasons, why the North continues to draw the entire nation backward. Learn to read comprehensively, and while you are at it, learn some manners. |

Onechancearmy:I do not know what your definition of functional is. Cape Verde Luxembourg Lichtenstein Swaziland and Togo are no less functional than Nigera I am not interest in speculating about what may happen if we break Ngeria or India . I am not sure the relevance of that to what I said All I know is I made a statement of fact and you said "DO the math" to see how wrong you are. My math was right and your statement wrong |

There is a difference between an official language and national/regional language. An official language is a language used for high-status functions in a state:, including by the government, education, and media. Most of the time it (or they) will have been declared official through a law or in the constitution of that country. A national language is a language that is widespread in a country and has some symbolic status (i.e., it is a symbol of the country or group). For obvious reasons, a national language is also an official language. For example, Japanese is both the official language of Japan as well as the (only) national language there, French is both national and official, and many other examples can be found. Another , although slightly different example can be found in the Republic of Ireland, where both English and Irish are national languages and official languages although Irish is not very widespread anymore. However, sometimes an official language is not a national language. This situation is commonplace in Africa, where European languages (French, English, and Portuguese) are official languages but are not national languages. So Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and other languages in Nigeria are national languages predominately spoken in certain regions of the country. Hausa is the regional language in Northern Nigeria (mainly North West and North East), just like Yoruba is in the 6 states in South West Nigeria and Igbo in the 5 states in South East Nigeria. In India, with a population of 1.2 billion, the official languages are Hindi (largest number of speakers) and English (used extensively in business and administration; it is important in education, especially as a medium of higher education). India has no national language. Each state and union territory has one or more official languages, and the constitution recognises in particular 22 "scheduled languages": Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Kashmiri, Marathi, Punjabi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Bengali, Sindhi, Santaji, Odia, Nepali, Manipuri, Maithili, Konkani, Dogri, Bodo, Malayalam, and Assamese. martineverest: 1 Like |

aribisala0: Fine, suit yourself. By your math Nigeria (a nation of 36 heavily indebted federating units jokingly referred to as "states" can have 20 economically viable nations created out of it. If that's what you want to believe then so be it. With the way the country is rapidly going downhill, we will find out in the not too distant future which one of us is right. |

Onechancearmy:No one was discussing the peculiarities of finances so do not try to be clever by half. This was purely about population and NOTHING ELSE. we are discussing language The proposition was that India has a population that is so exceptionally large 20 nation states can be carved out of it as justification for a LANGUAGE POLICY or practice. Nigeria too has an exceptionally large popuation though not as large as India. The fact that the Elephat is a large animal does not mean the cow is not large too. Our large population justifies a heterogenous Language policy |
