No one was discussing the peculiarities of finances so do not try to be clever by half.
This was purely about population and NOTHING ELSE. we are discussing language

The proposition was that India has a population that is so exceptionally large 20 nation states can be carved out of it as justification for a LANGUAGE POLICY or practice.

Nigeria too has an exceptionally large popuation though not as large as India. The fact that the Elephat is a large animal does not mean the cow is not large too.

Our large population justifies a heterogenous Language policy

Don't give yourself a brain aneurism by blindly arguing a stupid point. I would rather have an official language like English than have 50 or more meaningless "indigenous" official languages whose relevance disappears the moment one sets foot outside of the country. Case closed.

Haba, "Na today"?

I started respecting the Hausas after I saw a teacher teach Further Maths purely in Hausa language at a school in Hotoro.

It is not entirely bad but the question is, how many academic books are written in Hausa? Was the further maths textbook the teacher used written in Hausa? We shouldn't deprive these kids their right to full education. If people are made to learn French and other languages, then English shouldn't be a luxury. After all, many of the northern elites speak very good English, so why not extend same opportunities to the less privileged?

You determine what is stupid for you that is your area of stupidity jurisdiction. You are entitled to your own preferences what is important is to argue rationally and sensibly and have the grace to admit you are wrong. The point is your India + population logic does not work as you have seen with the Nigeria example.
Resorting to breezy bluster instead of admitting the failure of that argument does not cut it.
There is a good justification , on the grounds of population for multiple languages in Ngeria, Nigeria too IS EXCEPTIONAL in population terms.

The reality is English is inaccessible to most Nigerians in their daily lives

Kolping:
There is a difference between an official language and national/regional language.
An official language is a language used for high-status functions in a state:, including by the government, education, and media. Most of the time it (or they) will have been declared official through a law or in the constitution of that country.

A national language is a language that is widespread in a country and has some symbolic status (i.e., it is a symbol of the country or group). For obvious reasons, a national language is also an official language. For example, Japanese is both the official language of Japan as well as the (only) national language there, French is both national and official, and many other examples can be found. Another , although slightly different example can be found in the Republic of Ireland, where both English and Irish are national languages and official languages although Irish is not very widespread anymore.

However, sometimes an official language is not a national language. This situation is commonplace in Africa, where European languages (French, English, and Portuguese) are official languages but are not national languages.

So Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and other languages in Nigeria are national languages predominately spoken in certain regions of the country.
Hausa is the regional language in Northern Nigeria (mainly North West and North East), just like Yoruba is in the 6 states in South West Nigeria and Igbo in the 5 states in South East Nigeria.

In India, with a population of 1.2 billion, the official languages are Hindi (largest number of speakers) and English (used extensively in business and administration; it is important in education, especially as a medium of higher education). India has no national language. Each state and union territory has one or more official languages, and the constitution recognises in particular 22 "scheduled languages": Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Kashmiri, Marathi, Punjabi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Bengali, Sindhi, Santaji, Odia, Nepali, Manipuri, Maithili, Konkani, Dogri, Bodo, Malayalam, and Assamese.

nice one.....but what will u say about Spain and Catalan.......Catalans aren't happy that Spanish govt are imposing Spanish on them instead of allowing them use their native catalan as their official language

No matter what methodology is applied, the logistics of picking a certain number of languages from out of 400 different ones, then translating millions of pages of official documents into those languages is simply going to be a huge and unnecessary waste of time and money. And who gets to determine which languages are "predominant" in a specific area? Won't their be a tendency for certain groups to be marginalised in the long run and for some languages to simply disappear?
We're better off as we are now with an internationally recognised official language which makes us fit better into the modern world.
who says English will not be used it's a matter of incorporating our local languages esp wer it's predominant I studied Hausa it didn't prevent me from learning my language afemai

If its this way , well good luck on getting an hause man to learn igbo vise vaser.

We are multi cultural and if we make every 300 some languages official it will cause confusion and Nigeria can't unite that way. English language is the best intermediate language we can use to communicate with each other and have no problem of any tribe language superiority issues.
I can speak Hausa and my dialect afemai fluently...so no kwans ok...even pidgin we don't value pple are valuing it outside our shores

The great Hausa language is in the same league with Swahili and Arabic. They are internationally recognized languages. Arabic and Swahili have official status in several African Nations and AU.
There is Hausa service radio and TV stations in many European countries and USA.
If your native language is spoken in only one LGA in Nigeria donot join issues with HAUSA.

angry Rubbish. Is English their language? How many British can speak Hausa language? Their religion encourages teachings in Arabic. This is why we condemn the removal of the Islamic inscriptions on the centenary notes. It's a symbol of Arabic pride and a motivation for northern Muslims who doesn't like to speak English

English is our national language.

I think it's just religion that messed the North up.. While white Christian missionaries we're building schools in Calabar, Badagry, Abia, and most southern states.. The North were still engrossed with fighting "infidels" They recognised the importance of Western education not too long ago.

Your problem is intellectual laziness.
Go and find out how many books were published in Hausa land by prominent scholars like Sheik Usman Bn Fodio and his deciples even before white man brought western education to Nigeria.
There were philosophers in the North before the arrival of missionaries to the land called West Africa today.

Yes nah. And that's why when you see an educated Hausa man, he is very intelligent. The local language makes them understand it.

While serving in Kebbi State in 2006 as a maths teacher in JSS Karaye, Maiyama LGA. I have one Musa who interprets mathematics to the JS 3 students. Musa did his primary school in sokoto and can speak pidgin English.

When i say 2 + 2 = 4, students will ask Musa in Hausa what that means, Musa will ask me in pidgin...i will explain to Musa in pidgin and he will explain to the class in Hausa.

I taught JS3 students addition, subtraction, divison...then we couldn't treat multiplication because they stopped coming to school due to the confusion it caused them. They preferred Makaranta Islamia to the Western education. Principal asked me to stop. Junior WAEC is a story for another day.

My service year was fun shaa!
I can help but laugh at this. Seriously North is a big setback 2 the rest of us.

You just insult people when they reason far superior to you. That's just childish. He made absolutely valid, and salient points. English language is what unites this country, and the universe to a large extent. This is part of the reasons, why the North continues to draw the entire nation backward. Learn to read comprehensively, and while you are at it, learn some manners.

Firstly, am sure you are not blind to read that he started with insult,
Secondly, your arogancy should not block you from coming accross as post testifying to benefit of using our language
lastly you must have just escape from beatings of gorillas

if it is not possible in your region, this is what yourubas and northernersnug can easily enjoy and it will work perfectly

You have to understand that these countries don't have tribal languages like us in Africa . yes the mother tough is best . if so then the Igbo's , Yoruba's and others will learn with there own mother tough . this will cause confusion in a country that is suppose to unite. English is that unity language, it is like that for many countries. The hauses if you know them are nonchalance and reluctant to learn English because it is a western language they prefer Arabic . it is this way in many Muslim countries . I can't tell you why they hate western culture . but its mostly a thing of religion, they believe that if they learn English they are giving in to Christianity.

P.s . Arabic is foreign language but an hause man will learn it will JOY.

My brother I like part of you post. religious apart, sentiment apart. using our language will work well especially in yoruba and northern landa

in waec as example you know the languages we study then.

Am not saying we should not have a unified language (english) but teaching english with our language will make us understand it better

take indians for example with their differncies in their language they still have offiicial language.

In havard they are using english to teach yoruba am even afraid thqt the white will soobe teaching us yoruba and be taking money from us

how do indians use third language to teach english

your contribution to the post is as a result of poor reasoning
