Mpeace: Not exactly my Oga. For while any bank(s) can voluntarily decide to tour that early path, they are not compelled to take full impairment at the quarterly stage. However, they must do so at the end of each financial year. My take from the rule is this: - At the quarterly stage; While some level of disclosure is necessary, full disclosures are voluntary and at the discretion of the banks. …however the CBN would still do some needed check to ascertain the level of impairment from disclosures made, and possibly compel the bank(s) to adjust with the aim of creating a proper balance where necessary. - At year end; Full disclosures are compulsory. But pls don’t take my word for it. Take instead the words from the CBNs recent guideline on financial reporting standards for banks. …because this is Nigeria. …where policy flip ups seem to be the order of the day. Particularly with this current administration. Just 2 days ago, I heard that some banking heavyweights and their cronies at the helm of power are already secretly calling for a scrap or at the very least a delay to the implementation of the new guideline. Bottomline: This is still Nigeria. But I sincerely hope that the CBN will do well to stick to their guns. Note however that the new IFRS 9 guideline actually took effect from the 1st of January 2018. Btw, I already gave my honest take on the likely expectations and impact that adopting the new IFRS 9 guideline would have on the banks. |
