A fatal multiple accident occurred at Fidiwo on the Ibadan - Lagos expressway on Saturday 28 April 2018 . A total of two vehicles were involved . A Lagos yellow intra city bus with registration number number AAA 886 XR , a Ford Transit bus travelling from Lagos to Ilorin who on high speed was overtaking wrongfully and collided with a Volvo truck, black coloured with registration number LSD 138XQ.

The Ford Transit Bus was earlier flagged down for speeding by FRSC patrol team that noticed the speed of the passenger bus, but he ignored the flag down order and even abused the patrol team with the use of his hand, but unfortunately barely driving five minutes from the FRSC Patrol team that cautioned him for speeding, the bus collided with the truck travelling from the opposite direction.

A total of 20 People comprising 11 Male adults and 9 female adults were involved .The total number of people killed were 12 comprising 6 male adults and 6 female adults.

From preliminary accident investigation by the FRSC, the suspected cause of the crash was speed, wrongful overtaking which led to loss of control at the narrowed section of the road where traffic is diverted to enable repairs of the weakened bridge between FIDIWO and SANDCRETE.

The corpses of the dead passengers were deposited at FOS Mortuary, IPARA. While those injured were taken to IFEOLUWA Hospital and IMMACULATE HOSPITAL both at OGUNMAKIN.

The crash scene has been cleared for free flow of traffic by FRSC, assisted by other traffic and emergency agencies It should be noted that traffic advisory was earlier issued by FRSC on the condition of the road as a black spot, warning motorists to drive with caution around the area .

A daily occurrence among drivers and sadly, this same bus carry passengers who notice the driver's irresponsibility but keep quiet and rely on only prayers.....
Praying is good but faith without deed is dead!

Frsc will not help us caution these reckless drivers...Its the responsibility of passengers to INSIST that the driver is responsible...There is no duplicate in life.....Its better to be late for an appointment than being an accident victim!

Over Speeding kills....any wrongful overtaking can be fatal....Patience is a virtue!

Some one should volunteer to ask the driver to stop in order to ease themselves.....get out of the vehicle and give that reckless driver a "reckless beating".....By the time the driver sees that everyone is against him,he will behave himself.....and drive safely!
Action is what these reckless drivers listen to....

Some drivers are very stubborn. When cautioned they will tell you they have been plying that road since 25 years. They forget that each safe journey is just by chance. Even when car is well maintained and driving regulations followed, a crazy driver can ruin everything. The key is not to be that crazy driver and hope for the best. Rip.

This has actually happened before. When I was an undergraduate student in FUTA.

The driver seemed bent on wrecking the lives of the students he was driving to Lagos from Akure.

In the middle of nowhere the students formed like they wanted to ease themselves.

When the vehicle stopped, they beat the old man silly with the warning that if he drove above 80 they'd finish him. The guy gentle.

True life story.

This expressway is a death trap!
No my dear.
The expressway is not to blame.
Nigerian drivers drive like people on a suicide mission.
No one drives for safety. Everyone seems to be in a Formula One Race.
I can't seem to understand the race that Nigerian drivers engage in and the ultimate prize they win.
Nothing shocks me anymore about the suicides on our roads .
I drove on that same road yesterday, and was continually mocked for driving slow and being safety conscious.

While discussing with the person inside my vehicle, it eventually came to one obvious truth ( which to me is the problem). She said that rather than bother myself with the problems on the road, that I should just pray and leave everything to god.
And Bingo !!
Therein lies the problem.
I tried in futility to convince her that laws of physics are impervious to prayers and other forms of wishful thinking.

How to educate Nigerian drivers about road safety is shared responsibility for everyone, and that the laws of physics, not silly religious or superstitious Beliefs rule the road, is the great challenge of FRSC and the government in general.

I understand better now. Forgive my oversight. Those drivers want to make 10trips per day. Greed!

Thank you.

Thats a hasty conclusion about nigerians....You are totally wrong and mistaken....I know of some guys who surrounded a driver and beat d hell out of him when he was sleeping while driving.....

I know of an incident where I was travelling from bayelsa to phcity....the driver wanted to show his "fast and furious" driving skills.....After several warnings and threats from passengers, the driver jejely respected himself and his life!

Yes some people here in Nigeria are balless according to U,but I assure U,for one gutless person U know,U will find 4 brave individuals... don't be too general in ur conclusion!

Does courtesy to other drivers or concern for human life derive from the laws of physics or from a higher inbuilt sense of humanity.

You have completely missed my point, my dear friend.
In civilized countries, there are basic safety rules of the road that every road user must learn and pass before being permitted to drive.

Aside from that , there are layers of punitive measures, from fines, arrests, demerit points, high insurance premiums , drivers license suspensions, etc, that keeps individual drivers liable and accountable.
Over time, everyone gets used to a system of orderliness and safety while driving. Safety and courtesy becomes ingrained in their psyche.

Therefore, Safety should be the first and only abiding rule when driving.

We only speak of courtesy to other drivers because no one obeys the rules of the road in Nigeria . In fact, I guarantee you that 90% of Nigerian drivers don't even know what the basic rules of the road are.
It is because of the lawlessness on road ( driving with NO RULES) that the issue of courtesy for other road users becomes a consideration.

Now, even at that, let me remind you that showing courtesy to other road users is part and parcel of what is required to be safe on the road. That's what I mean that road safety is a shared responsibility.

Now why do we need to drive safely and be safety conscious ?

When we are operating a vehicle, we put our fragile bodies at the mercy of the laws of physics. The vehicle systems such as the breaks, the steering wheel, the signal lights, the horns, and most importantly, our eyes, ears, hand and arm reflexes, and our common sense , are all supposed to coordinate to keep us in line with the laws of physics, and prevent it from acting catastrophically upon our fragile bodies.

As you would agree with me, The Immutable laws of physics are impersonal and non negotiable.
Therefore prayers and appeals to Earth and sky deities are futile efforts.
