I want to use this medium to thank Nairaland and this thread especially for input, knowledge, criticisms and knowledge that has been shared for a long time. I gained insight from this thread before I went for my interview, moved here and even when settled here. 2 years later I am celebrating my masters graduation (cum laude). I cant begin to @ all the monikers that left in Fall 2016 but I trust everyone is doing good and also getting ready for graduation. Thank you all for everything

Two years now now .... wow our children are graduating smiley cheesy grin ...

Congrats and all the best in the future

Believe it or not. All visas have quotas for the year. Even the popular H1B, green cards all have quotas. Do more research and you'll see. Drivers license too has quotas.
No I don't agree. Its just hearsay that F1 visa has a quota, no data to substantiate this. The only ones that have quota is H1b visa and employment based greencard (countries quota). No data to substantiate that greencard by marriage has a quota.

John Hopkins is an interesting school .......It is very strong in medical but not so much in other areas (smokes & mirrors hype) so that school i would tread carefully with too . My friends who did MBA there and MPH there , wasnt worth the price tag especially since there was no funding . Some might say otherwise but i said my own

I totally agree with you on John Hopkins, I was initially deceived because of the ranking but I later observed that the program was filled with Chinese students (over 90%).

I also agree with you on UK. The only people that can even manage the employment structure there are IT guys. I guess i may have to stay back in Nigeria for an extra year embarassed embarassed embarassed

Don’t force corrections on anyone.. he might have been doing it for ages.. you can’t just expect him to stop right now with the way you’re saying it.. so let bare with him.. you need to acknowledge the fact that he has helped a lot of people here.. if actually you went through all the testimonies here.. so please let us all stop the corrections of a stuff I know he has learnt a lesson or the other..
he will surely put a lot of people through on this platform which the others may not have an idea of..

Although I’m not one of his fan though but I acknowledge the fact that he is a guru..

Hmm 322 for GRE...u try...u need to lecture me o coz I’m planning to write that exam

You can use the following things:

1) 5 lb. Book of GRE Practice Problems (Manhattan Prep GRE Strategy Guides) - do all the exercises twice and also do the online exercises.
2) The Official Guide to the GRE General Test - Practice all the tests, read the content very carefully and look for things that are crucial. Don't avoid the things you know pretty well such as basic math.
3) https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat-word-problems - watch all the GMAT math videos, the guy is exceptional. Will teach you how to approach the questions efficiently.
4) Download MAGOOSH's application of flashcards/ basic and advanced/
5) Official GRE Super Power Pack - Best source for GRE standard questions. Do it after doing the top 4 things and do it thrice if you can.
6) Give the exam - software test 2 weeks before the exam, to understand your mistakes. Do the same test again and again until you get a perfect score in quantitative.
If you have more time, you can practice questions from magoosh. They're very spot-on

Looking at the rate people apply, Nigeria for example, you personally think there is no quota?

In as much as I don't support the way he answers some questions because I believe there are better ways to pass the message accross. However, you guys are doing exactly what you are accusing him of. Calling someone 'ode' or 'boy' or 'waiter' is not rude to you? Because Nairaland is a faceless forum does not mean everyone here is a kid or fresh out of undergrad. Just to give you a perspective of who he is..this person you called waiter works in one of the largest oil company in the world. Him telling you to tell your friend to ask the question is not a big deal here. I don't think its hard to ignore some comments that are not telling you what you want to hear. Never burn bridges on your way up, you never know if you will need he/she's help later in life, nairaland is not that faceless. Never met or spoken to him in my life but if I see him in life, I can recognize him. Moving forward, try to practice what you preach, just ignore and get it going

Oil company or not, he has been very ill-mannered.

On another note, what's wrong with calling him a boy? is he a girl?

There is no quota since nothing implies otherwise and I dont think the rate at which we apply has anything to do with quota, not related. F1 visa is at the discretion of the VO.

Since you have decided to turn this to english, let me play along..so my Mom or your Mom are girls? Referring to your Uncle as boy is not rude to you? Boy and girl can be used interchangeably for any male and female respectively? I cant help you if you don't see the irony. Have a good day dear

I can’t really define what you’re trying to put forward. Can you please explain more??

Coxtie:
Please here is my new proposed transcript for the second time.. I’m reapplying..

VO: why do you want to change from philosophy to liberal arts?
Me: I’ve always desired to study liberal arts which my present university could not offer me.. besides liberal arts will help me in terms of peace keeping,
disputes settlement, peace building in individual and in the nation at large.. it will also help me in the ethical aspect.. which is the science of moral conduct to impact morals on every members of the public
.
VO: why do you want to change from your present school to the US??
Me: my present school could not offer liberal arts as a course of study which I’ve desired to study all my life..my present school could only offer classroom education which education is far more than that.. we have little exposure to wide range of knowledge apart from the classroom.. the administrative processing is kind of slow due to low employees..

VO: what are your plans after graduation??
Me: I intend coming back to Nigeria and work with the law enforcement agencies.. the police department to be precise..

You're studying Philosophy in Nigeria and you want to move to US to study Liberal Arts. In your attempt to justify why you're changing from Philosophy to Liberal Arts, you highlighted what Liberal Arts degree can fetch you. Obviously, you were implying that Philosophy won't help you to actualize your dream. Why I said your reasons are laughable is because you can achieve same aspirations even with a degree in Philosophy.

Like I said, if you wish you to study abroad simply say so, rather than struggle to make justifications that are laughable. That is my point.

I respect you a lot but this post disappointed me a little. It would have been ok to stop after that first sentence and you would have made your point in a clear, straight to the point and objective manner.

Secondly, what is the relevance of the third part in bold (working in a large oil company)? Good Lord, respect is reciprocal (and I don't care about age, status in life, etc.) and you should understand there's a limit to what everyone can take. Bullying is bullying. Call it what it is. Remember someone owns an oil company, or THAT oil company. Will that give them the right to bully him as an employee?

I agree with some of his opinions for example, over-dependence on God when someone is not prepared, discouraging people who just want to lie to get a visa, etc. but I do NOT support bullying. I'm sure this person doesn't talk to colleagues at work in this manner.

That being said, I agree with you on the posters not doing what they're criticizing. Name-calling, etc. should be discouraged. Again, be fair and objective with matters.

Let's get back on track as to why this thread was created. Have a nice day.

Ideally I would have ignored this but you seem like someone that one can have a conversation with and not play in the mud. 1) I am not here to please anybody, in life there is always room to have contrary opinion and its fine 2) The relevance of the 3rd part is what you explained yourself so I don't need to make that clear anymore. Additionally him not telling them what they want to hear is not bully. Times without number I have said that I absolutely agree that there are better ways to pass his message across but he never insulted anybody. The guys shouting are the ones insulting, they need to remove the speck out of their own eyes first. I don't believe he is bullying anyone, he is not trying to force anyone to do what he wants, he just gave his own opinion.By the way, there are many opinions here and its left for whosoever to pick the good and ignored the bad. You guys are the one trying to bully him into silence. Have a good day too

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I still want you to tell me the relevance of that part I highlighted. I'm just confused and wanna know what you were trying to say. The same way I rolled my eyes when I saw "...maybe he's just a waiter", so don't think I'm personally attacking you, or anyone.

I'm not bullying anyone into silence, I'm only questioning statements like "You're one of the unfortunate souls who have been denied visas many times", and a lot of other statements I can't even remember. I mostly ignore things I don't agree with. I simply talked to you because I respect you and trusted you to reply without insults and settle disagreements like adults.

You're fine. I don't wanna dwell on this topic. Let's move on to important issues... ones that involve students and visas. wink

1. Would it be advisable for me to reapply and reduce my length of stay to just 4 weeks and tell the VO that i intend to spend my annual leave with my husband even after my initial application was on the basis of staying there throughout the duration of his studies?

2.Will it be a good decision to add an additional sponsor like my Dad or my In-laws including my husband as my sponsor and that they will assist financially while we are there ?Does this also imply that i would need to get a new i20 due to the extra sponsor?

3.If i do add another sponsor together with my dad, Is it compulsory that i have to submit all bank statements to the school to get a new i20 reflecting the total funds or i do not need to reapply for another i20 but rather add another sponsor and go with the extra bank statements for the new appointment?
4. What other suggestions will be most appropriate to use or present when i reapply?

My brother when one aggressively try to dominate others it's term as bullying, times without number have read most of his comments in here and I'm always like "Yo men this person is rude".... and just recently he came for me just cos I adviced someone to not just prepare harder but also seek Gods face and that's if he believes in it which ofcos is my opinion, so tell me why try to dominate that conversation when it doesn't even concerns him ? These behaviors of his is often done repeatedly and habitually here so YES he is a Bully but NO he can't Bully me : cool.......

And finally let's get on with better and important issues cos that's the main reason this page was created in the first place
