Doctors, Health Workers Can’t Receive Equal Pay – FG by IbnIbrahim: 8:35am On Apr 30, 2018
The Federal Ministry of Health has told health workers who are currently on strike that their demand for the same pay as doctors is unrealistic and unacceptable.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said this in a statement signed by the Assistant Director of Information, Olajide Oshundun, on Sunday while responding to an advertorial published by the Joint Health Sector Union.

He said efforts were being made to meet JOHESU’s demand for salary increase but health workers should not expect to be paid the same as doctors.

The statement read in part, “Indeed, the Federal Government has put machinery in place to ensure that the strike is called off by meeting with JOHESU officials on several occasions, the last being on Wednesday April 25, 2018, at the office of the Minister of Labour and Employment in Abuja.

“An offer has been made to adjust the salaries and wages of JOHESU members by the Federal Government. But what JOHESU is asking for is parity with medical doctors, which is neither practicable nor acceptable to the Federal Government.”

Adewole said in September 2017, JOHESU presented a 15-point demand to the Federal Government of which 14 had already been implemented while the last demand was being attended to by the high-level body set up by the government to look into its implementation.

He, therefore, called on JOHESU to suspend its strike for the sake of Nigerians.

The statement added, “The Federal Government wishes to appeal to JOHESU to immediately call off the strike and allow the high-level body to conclude its assignment as contained in the 2017 agreement.

JOHESU cannot be placed on the same salary scale with Doctors.

Their demand is unreasonable.

your post is collapsing on itself

You have said nothing about the degree by which johesu wants their salaries to be increased.

You don't hold a nation to ransome without coming clean with what it is you want.

Cos it seems the nation has no idea what johesu wants while johesu is in the corner agreeing that dey are being misconstrued indeed.

What manner of increase of salary does johesu want if it's not the same amount been paid to doctors?

And can someone plz tell the government that dey have the wrong picture?

I don't think JOHESU members are requesting to be placed on same salary scale with Doctors.

We're already short of health workers. Doctors are well needed alright. This should be at the expense of the benefits of other health workers. Just imagine a pharmacist cannot be the president of Nigeria Medical Association. This is just a corporate discrimination.

Health workers pay should be raised appropriately. Engineers should be recognized appropriately (oh! NSE is just as useless. All they know is registration and fees angry)

I don't think they are asking for equal pay with doctors but an adjustment in their CONHESS salary scale as was done for CONMESS

Who's asking for the same salary with doctors? JUHESU never ask for thesame salary with doctors, all they need is small increment.

Increasing the salary of johesu members by a thousand automatically mean an increase in doctors salary because there is a certain ratio to be maintained which is why fg will not increase their salary for now except there is something both party are not telling us.

They are asking for equal pay with doctors. They want relativity, ie the ratio of doctor's salaries to other health workers removed. This ratio was what was reintroduced for doctors in the so called adjustment after being eroded for so long, and not specifically salary increase.

There are no Pharmacists among the members of Nigerian Medical Association( NMA). A pharmacist cannot be the president of NMA just as a Medical Doctor cannot be the President of Pharmacists Association of Nigeria ( PAN). So what’s your problem?

. The adjustment of 2017 was to correct the relativity ratio, while I support an increment in the salary of johesu members, I also want it to be effected in salary of doctors. Once government accedes to demands of johesu, it should also increase Drs salary. Period!!

hmm i'm not sure about that, this relativity has always been in place and is used worldwide. But if really they want it removed then its quite unrealistic, how can an MLS earn the same with an MBBS holder?

Some comments above show that many of us are either ignorant or blinded by sentiments.
JOHESU want to do away with relativity, they want skipping, they want to earn call duty allowance or its equivalent, they want specialist allowance which when taken into consideration puts them at par with the doctors. Its only in a shithole country that these demands are made. The world over, every professional know the limit of their expertise and entitlement, but in Nigeria, the reverse is the case.
Let's keep at it, we're already on self destruct mode.

Well I don't have any problems Sir.

This debate was in the news late last year. Why do we even have to have two such bodies? There's an umbrella body for all Engineering professionals, same goes for the law profession.. Why can't such happen with medicals?

Or maybe twas the position of the minister for health.

Why are you talking like a complete idiot? Pharmacists have their own association. NMA comprises doctors alone. Why should a pharmacist head the NMA? Has any doctor headed pharmacists association?

The relativity bfr was a doctor was 2 levels ahead but now e don reach 4 level ahead. I dnt tink dats fair. Until one of their children become a health worker dey wont c d evil in wat they are doing now. Do u know ow much a Level 7 health worker earns now compare it with wat a house officer earns. D diff is more dan 100k. Lets assume dat deir entry level. Plus d discrimination u ll still face at d work place oooo
. It's the same globally, stop complaining. A nurse in USA earns about $32.66 hourly while a medical doctor earns $80 hourly. Find out how's its done elsewhere before clamoring for unattainable goals.

Nigerians should know by now that the minister of health n that of information have something in common, that is 99.9% of what comes out of their mouth is not true. remember he misinformed Nigerians that johesu never had an agreement with the FG ,he claim they could only produce minutes of meeting n not a signed agreement, but within few minutes of his fallacious and mischievous pronouncement the social media was flooded with evidence of an agreement which he appended his signature, thus coming out to tell Nigerians that johesu is asking for same pay with doctors is misleading n deceptive. enough of this egocentric behaviors in the health sector, may be the government should revert to The CONTISS, where all employees of federal ministry of health are on same salary structure.

You're trying to paint a wrong picture here my friend. Pharmacists don't belong to Nigeria Medical Association; they belong to Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria rather so why should they be allowed to head NMA?
I think inferiority complex is Johesu biggest problem. To be paid as Doctors or placed same salary scale as doctors is laughable, on fact ridiculous. That's not obtainable in any country in the entire wide world.
