uuspace: WHAT IS 'SELL IN MAY AND GO AWAY'? Sell in May and go away is a well-known trading adage that warns investors to sell their stock holdings in May to avoid a seasonal decline in equity markets. If a trader follows the sell-in-May-and-go-away strategy, the trader sells stock holdings in May and invests again in the equity market in November to avoid the typically volatile May to October period. Some investors find this strategy more rewarding than staying in the equity markets throughout the year. BREAKING DOWN 'Sell In May And Go Away' This strategy is based on the historical under performance of some stocks in the six-month period commencing in May and ending in October compared to the six-month period from November to April. Origination of the Phrase "Sell in May and Go Away" The phrase sell in May and go away is thought to originate from an old English saying, "Sell in May and go away, and come on back on St. Leger's Day." This phrase refers to a custom of aristocrats, merchants and bankers who would leave the city of London and escape to the country during the hot summer months. St. Leger's Day refers to the St. Leger's Stakes, a thoroughbred horse race held in mid-September and the last leg of the British Triple Crown. American traders who are likely to spend more time on vacation between Memorial Day and Labor Day mimic this trend and have adopted the phrase as an investing adage. Before 201, stock market patterns have supported the theory behind the strategy. Do the Markets Drop in May? From 1950 to around 2013, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has had an average return of only 0.3% during the May to October period compared with an average gain of 7.5% during the November to April period, according to Forbes. While the exact reasons for this seasonal trading pattern were not known, lower trading volumes due to the summer vacation months and increased investment flows during the winter months were cited as contributory reasons for the discrepancy in performance between the May to October and the November to April periods. However, recent evidence from Investor's Business Daily shows that this seasonal pattern may not be the case anymore. According to Investor's Business Daily, If an investor had sold stock in May 2016, they would have missed some lucrative runs. The NASDAQ ended April 2016 at 4775.36; it closed higher in May and soared in late June. The NASDAQ rose by 55% from the end of June 2016 until the end of January 2018. Alternatives to Sell in May and Go Away Instead of selling in May, some analysts recommend rotation. This means that investors would not cash out their investments but would instead vary their portfolios and focus on products that may be less affected by the overall slow growth in the markets during the summer and early fall, such as technology or health. Well, a deep pocket might pick interest tomorrow and the rest will be story..... On a second thought, would anyone know if Fidelity have got any good MM backing them? |

rahjan: i just did this with datamax. You need to go to your stockbrokers and request for a purchase transfer form. You will fill the form and sign, then your stockbrokers will countersign the form and send it to CSCS. Once your stockbrokers have an acknowledged receipt copy from cscs they will give this to you and you can then take it to the registrars. As I said I just completed this same process with my registrars. It's really not complicated at all. Just get in touch with the stockbrokers that sold the shares to you. First Registrar and Afriprud probably already have your signature on file hence they didn't require a verification. Good luck! 1 Like |

MSCI/ General Comment - Week Ended 30 April 2018 Selling for the day reduced drastically, technically I will not consider this as selling looking at the quantity of each equity in the fund’s portfolio. I see the fund trying to gauge the proper mood of the market. There were flurry of reports, some showed insanely good profits that will temp one to look for more funds to invest (but let see what happens from tomorow). For the first time I saw what appeared like a short term fixed income investment on the Fund’s portfolio, this is money waiting to come into the equity market again? With this money in the portfolio that can drop anytime, the fund is telling us that there is no permanent enemy in the market, you just go where the money is and forget/dump any stock not moving according to plan. Being nimble like the fund will not be easy, as for most equities the fund holds a huge volume and selling may just be a way of taking profits on some positions/freeing more may for better stocks. Monday for the week was fairly bullish, but did you notice how some stocks went up early in the day, but letter drop from the earlier higher opening to close in some cases at a slightly lower prices? Now time to watch the market closely for some earnings play. Earnings play is a strategy which we want to benefit from positive sentiments in a company’s earnings release, it does not necessary mean buying the stock with highest percentage earning increase, but waiting for the right time to see when the market is reacting positively to earnings release. I will point out one when I see it. If it is just following high earnings then last year those of us who bought WAPCO about April last year should have made money (I bought at about NGN55 then, but alas I got out after some time with a small loss around NGN50, same story for me in CI Leasing for 2017). So, I will not jump into positive earning just like that, there is a proper strategy for doing this ans will point it out when I see one, before any body talk about Julius Berger, that was a similar situation that lured me into CI Leasing after the 2nd quarter result in 2017. On the supply I see 41666.01- 41,832.42 on the NSE all share index being a supply point. If the index close above this level, the the bulls can relax a title. Caution: This is for information purpose only. Data used are assumed to be correct. However, you may want to verify the data from an appropriate source.

FIDELITY BANK just released one of its best annual report in recent times, showing a spike accross key revenue lines with a better than average positive metrics. Here's a few highlight: Positives; - An astronomical approx 94% jump in PAT YoY. - An over 18% increase in gross earnings plus a slight increase in interest income which was just enough to make up for that on the expense line. - A very healthy cash position over the course of the year. (...approx 64% increment YoY) - An improvement in loans & advances (...this is crucial to help curtail the strain from their core interest income line going forward). - An improvement in debt servicing. - A leap in EPS and ROAE with EPS advancing by a whopping approx 91%. Negatives; - A drop in retained earnings (...and by extension, a drop in dividend payout). - A drop in deposit mobilisation putting further pressure on their economy of scale with a strain from core line of income. However, for the clear reason that the merits far outweigh the adjustment for any downside risk from the negatives, I have just adopted this coy as one of my 'concubine'. ...for with this result, 'she has become sexy enough to us'. ...and as her name (fidelity) suggest, we do not think she would 'cheat' on us. ...especially in the short to mid term time frame. Going by FIDELITYs YE 2017 result, my Fair Value is N5.20k. ...which presents a very juicy discount of 103% from Friday's closing price of N2.55k. My verdict: Just follow ur instinct. NOTE: This analysis is strictly result driven and not any sort of recommendation. ...DD still advised as always pls. ...my 2 cent. 1 Like 1 Share |
