HELP!! Please I am trying to schedule my visa interview appointment on the US visa application site but I'm late and my preferred date is past. Someone advised that I monitor the site and keep reloading the home page to get a preferred date. The problem I have is that this is the 3rd time I am being blocked from the site. The site prevents me from logging in within 48hours and then gives me back the access and after I try reloading the home page for a day or 2 they block me again. I need a date between the end of May and first week of June. PLEASE IS THERE A TRICK I CAN USE SO I DONT KEEP GETTING BLOCKED AND I GET THE DATE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. |

hilaryxoxo:Ma, because you clearly do not have any knowledge whatsoever about schools in the Texas A&M System, does not make TAMUK a dead school. Rankings count to a certain extent but in the Engineering and IT world, inasmuch your school is ranked and accredited, no disrespect to VIU, it’s what you can make out of your degree (Your Skill Sets) that matters. From that same TAMUK I know a couple of Engineering Grad Students who got Summer Internship Positions with IBM, Intels, Cummins etc. LinkedIn is your friend. All these mediocre Schools in Nigeria like Unilag do not even rank among the top 6000 tertiary institutions in the world, they can’t even compete with some schools in Kenya. Shalom. 16 Likes |

YoungTesla: Hey, I know about the Texas A & M system but I wasn’t familiar with the Kingston one. The main message I was trying to pass across was that we should shoot higher shots. I just joined nairaland and 80% of the schools people have mentioned on this thread don’t even have any ranking. In other words, these school arent worthy/accredited enough to be ranked. That’s a very big thing. A lot of people here are blinded by the fact that the schools are in the US. They don’t know that there’s no prospect in some of these schools. I’m definitely not saying it must be an Ivy League, but let it be a decent school. Top 1000 in the world should be the minimum threshold. 5 Likes |

YoungTesla: A school where 1 person out of 300 graduates join Intel/IBM etc is not equal to a school where >100 out of 300 graduates join IBM/Intel etc No matter how skill-dependent IT/Engineering jobs are, you can't compare the opportunities open to an MIT/Stanford Engineering student to the opportunities open to a Bowie State University engineering student in the US. Again, LinkedIn is your friend Let's tell ourselves the truth The only exception I've seen with this are 1. Companies having connection with some lowly to moderately ranked schools like Howard University and other HBCUs to hire their tech graduates mainly for diversity purposes. 2. Lowly ranked to moderately schools like San Jose State University, Seattle University and Santa Clara University located in excellent locations where these companies are sited Before misquoting me; 1. I did not say people that go to lowly ranked schools cannot find good jobs. They can, but they have to work harder than the average Stanford/MIT grad to find the jobs. 2. I did not say Howard University, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Bowie State and Seattle Universities are bad schools. In fact, they are better than most Nigerian universities but in terms of US standards, they are moderate to lowly ranked schools. Abeg no quote me. If you no agree with my point, disagree for your mind. I no fit argue today 3 Likes |

guys can a international student concurrently run a master degree program and also a graduate certificate program in the same university and not run contrary of the F1 visa rules? |

Chidinho10:You actually have a point but this is not the reality on ground at the moment. Maybe this is true like some 2years ago but not entirely anymore. Going to MiT or Standford or top 30 Engineering schools does not guarantee you a job as an international student in this trump era. Very few companies are willing to file for H1B visa. Most companies are not willing to employ on short term basis. Some 2years ago, almost all engineering students that go for NSBE Convention (largest career fair for engineering students) come back with one job or the other no matter the school you go, what matters is your skills set and networking skills. However, stats from last NSBE convention shows that almost 98% didn’t get any offer. Heard only cummins was willing to employ international students which is why the queue at cummins was the longest. My point is, as much as I am a strong proponent of going to top schools, going there wont really do much in getting jobs when you are restricted by visa. Nobody is going to recruit you based on the name of your school rather they will employ you based on what you are bringing to the table.Google VP, Laszlo bock once said that “There is no relationship between where you went to school and how you did 5,10,15years into your career’’. Not everybody will attend TAMU,GAtech,VTech,Bekeley,MIT etc and there are many graduates from this same TAMUC, Tenesee tech etc doing absolutely well in Cummins,Intel etc whereas there are many grads of UIUC, TAMU that are jobless. And by the way you don’t need to work harder, all you need to do is work smart. In summary, as many that cant make it to top schools, attend a ranked school that you can and make the best of it. 20 Likes 2 Shares |

femi312: Nice analysis from you I must confess, I picked nice points from what you said I'll chip in some few more points from my observations. Yeah, it's true that the Trump era has been very difficult for international students. In fact, no one know how the situation will be in the next few years. Irrespective of the visa situation, a large number of companies still go to these top schools to hire international students. These companies have tradition of hiring from specific schools and even with the visa issue, they still keep to this practice. I have friends from some of these schools who were hired on campus between January till date for roles in companies like Wayfair, Gartner etc. These people just practically sat in their classes and got these jobs because the companies have tradition of hiring from the schools. I'm not saying students at top schools get jobs on a platter but the opportunities at their disposal are enormous. Companies like Palantir Technologies and McKinsey still hire and sponsor international techies in large numbers from Harvard; Google, Uber, Apple still hire internationals in large numbers from UCBerkerly; Amazon and Microsoft still hire in droves from UWash. When you go to a target school, you'll definitely get opportunities at these top firms (which you may not get if you did not attend), and if you practice your interviewing skills well, you will definitely get an offer. 7 Likes 4 Shares |

I have said it many times, the problem with Nigeria is not just with the corrupt politicians, but with the mindset of the average Nigerian citizen. Looking down on people/places/things in 2018? *sigh* @thegrandchemist put it absolutely spot on!!! "KNOW THYSELF". Know your strengths and weaknesses, and plan your life according to them. If you have a background in creative arts or Insurance, don't let anyone fool you into thinking you'd be a complete failure here unless you switched to an engineering or nursing program. Life comes with NO guarantees. Not everyone can score 320+ on their GRE or 110+ on TOEFL to get into top programs/schools. Don't look down on people who can't get into those programs and go to lesser known schools instead. As @Femi321 put it, the country has changed. Most of the employers now lose interest in hiring foreigners who need to be sponsored to get legal status to work. Going to study at the white house guarantees absolutely NOTHING. Getting into top programs is great! I encourage people who have what it takes to shoot for them, but let's encourage others who cannot. A friend of mine went to a school no one knows about at age 32 and got a Bachelor's in finance. She works for Microsoft now and makes $120k+ per annum. Another friend with a Nursing Masters degree makes so much less than her. They are both happy with their lives. Other examples, a truck driver friend went to truck driving training for 8 weeks or so, job he got now pays him about $60k, CNAs (after 6 weeks of training) get jobs that pay $14+ per hour. Happiness in life is subjective, let's encourage people. You have no idea how difficult it is for some people to even get into those schools you laugh at and the joy on their faces when they finally see the admission letters from them. Encourage people to believe in themselves and think outside the box. 63 Likes 9 Shares |

Hello Everyone.. Saying the truth is one important factor during the interview.. Now am going for an undergraduate course and the major reason i picked that school is because my MOM said thats the school am going to(since she is the one paying). Now i also did my own personal research and found out the school ia actually better than the rest of the schools i applied to. My question is,assuming am asked why i picked the school do i say the two reasons(My mom and my personnal research) or i should leave my mum outta it.. And start giving facts that i got online.. Thanks. My interview is close.. Responses please..God bless |

NiklausAkins: Ask your mom why she wants THAT school. There has to be a reason and that reason could be good enough. An answer such as "Of the 3/4/5 schools I got into/applied to, x school was worth the investment. This is because..." could do the magic. Don't stress over it too much. Just try not to make your answer sound generic/scripted and you'll be fine. 1 Like |

hilaryxoxo: 80%? Goddamn, that’s preposterous, you made some salient points and some utterly bold fallacious Statements. Albeit, most Prospective Grad Students on this board often get in lowly ranked Schools, mostly Tier 2, Tier3, and some unranked schools , but definitely not according to your lingo the ones not “accredited enough” if you go to the embassy with such you are in for a long ride. This reminds me of the TV series The Big Bang Theory, where a certain Character, Dr. Sheldon Cooper always ridicule his colleague Howard Wolowitz for having only a Masters degree in Engineering and for attending MIT. The irony is Howard was the only one who made any real contributions to science, as a matter of fact went to the space and worked with Steve Hawking, Sheldon’s Idol. The Genius Theoretical Physicist Sheldon Cooper couldn’t even make any headway with his research in String Theory, with his fancy multiple Ivy League degrees. My point is, it’s what you can make out of your degree that counts in the end. However, your advice is good, getting into decent schools should be ultimate goal, and if you have a very strong profile shoot for the big boys, the Ivy League, no room for mediocrity, If your profile can only get in Tier 3 schools, don’t beat yourself, be book smart, graduate summa cum laude, horn your skill sets, and finally be street smart, network your way. Most Schools folks mention here are decent, with exception to Schools like VIU and her co-traveller, and those are not highly prevalent here. If getting into decent schools is what you really advice then TAMUK should suffice. Enough said. 12 Likes 1 Share |
