I read your comment and completely agree with you. Of course, there are cases of people who succeed in Nigeria and make money setting up businesses. You cited cases, successful stories and I smiled reading them. I'm happy when I read happy things like that. Just so you know, I can also cite 5 cases of people who invested in these same businesses you mentioned and cried bitterly afterwards. How many people have 1m cash to make any investment? How easy is it to have 1m in an average man's account?

That being said, the 4m Naira gist was a mere subtopic. Making money or owning a house in Nigeria or anywhere else wasn't the main theme of the thread. I was majorly talking about why people go abroad to live a better quality of life. Most people who travel don't do it only to amass wealth. They just want quality life.

Most of my counter-arguments on the business-idea topic is that it's not really a black and white world. People vaguely say: "instead of going abroad, why not use that money to set something up here" and they'd be unable to say anything meaningful regarding what business to set up.

It's personal opinion. I really appreciate your contribution and it makes so much sense. Life in Nigeria no matter what the attraction is, is just not for ME anymore. I don't wanna go over the same issues, but the main point here is quality of life and it depends on what we see as a life of quality.

In conclusion, I'm sorry if some of my posts give the impression that I think NO BUSINESS can thrive in Nigeria, that's not my position at all.

I will add my own two cents. I graduated in 2017 and started a business a month after I graduated and in a period of 7 months the business has seen more than 3 million naira in revenue. I have been trying to raise funds to grow the business but I have been frustrated at every turn. Funny enough I built the business from nothing without any money and thought my story will be appealing to incubators and investors but damn I was wrong. I am really thinking of a masters degree now, I graduated with a 2 2 but am thinking of using my business experience and milestones over the past year to make a stellar application. Africa is a cursed continent and should be left for the likes of Buhari and Yusuf . I am 22 years going to 23 and I don't want to waste any time. Before you know it one is 30 years old without anything tangible to show for it.

You made 3m in 7 months from nothing? That's remarkable and super impressive. If the business isn't expanding yet, is it possible to give it time to maintain the pace, while you save enough to be able to expand it slowly but steadily? It's just a thought.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Africa is cursed lol. It just doesn't work out for some people.

That's the revenue o the profit is just enough to cover the operational costs and not to expand. To expand I would need to get my own inventory which costs a lot of money.

It's so painful really. There is nothing in place to encourage entrepreneurs. Taking loans from banks is a death sentence as interest rates are killing. No grants or investments from the government. Nothing sad sad

I'm im tears right now. we are about the same age and you've raised so much whilst I'm tired and frustrated in Med school. I'm thinking of dumping this degree after using it to raise sufficient funds to go to Germany. I don't know if it's possible to get MBA in Germany after a medical degree in Nigeria ?
Just finish the medical degree and look for how to write PLAB or USMLE so you can leave this useless continent.

If you still have that N500K, look for a small shop, establish your wife. Either she open restaurant or she sell food while you work. I can't marry someone who doesn't contribute to household income.

Now this is the dilemma I'm trying to avoid at the moment. At 28 years my spouse wants us to settle down. Now I'm thinking to myself once I do this & kids start rolling in, I'm trapped in this country, because feeding & living expenses will start to roll in. The only option is to leave the country & she'll join me later, easier said than done yeah?

Another issue to note is that Embassy consulates won't even give you a VISA if you can't prove you have sufficient reason & enough investment to return to your country.

Second option is to do a Masters or a PHD if possible. Paying about 11,000 USD for just the first Semester in the US is so much that a lot cannot afford. The other option is to move to Germany which cost 4Million excluding travel expenses. So the Cheapest options goes down to Permanent temporary residence for Canada which takes 9 Months or more.

Thanks @theamerican for your response.

It gets a little more complicated when you're not single. Now you'll have to consider your partner when making any decision(s). Lucky you, no kids yet so you've got time to make bold decisions and take risks. I hope things work out for you. I don't know as much about European migration as I do about here so I can't say a lot on how it's done... and sure, you're welcome.

With adequate preparations for PhD/MS, you don't need to bother your head about tuition in the US. Follow the student thread and learn more.

Ok great, but can you give me a hint please? Are you talking about scholarships?

I'm going through the "general-u.s.a-student-visa-enquiries-part" thread now but it's 244 pages long. Just so I'll know what to look out for.

I just stumbled on this thread and the @op write up was waoh!!..
I would also like to contribute or comment but I want the @op to tell us how she got to the US and her process of naturalization and how long she has been here because she didn't elaborate on that in her introduction and i felt that should be the first and most important aspect of the introduction. Also,I would like to know the precise purpose this thread is out to accomplish.

I can't derail her thread, I'll suggest you ask your question in that other thread. Just know that financial supports may be as Graduate Assistanship (GA), Research Assistantship (RA) or Fellowship for graduate students.
I only came here to learn about her naturalization....

Dear @Kalu61

I understand how patriotic you are and how you believe staying in Nigeria and setting up your own business with money, becoming a landlord, etc. is better than being abroad, that is fine. It's clear where your priorities lie and what you see as a fulfilled life. To each his own.

Without being condescending, it seems you have absolutely NO idea why people seek greener pastures to developed countries. You converted 8k euros to 4m Naira and because it's in millions, you think it's a fortune? Not everyone wants to be a landlord in Ikorodu, Epe or Sango (No disrespect to people who live there).

Nigeria is a failed state. Do you know how many death-traps they import into Nigeria as salvaged cars that people drive on the roads? Do you know how many illegal drugs are on the market because the "owners" bribed their way through the agencies supposed to control these? God forbid your daughter goes to a rich man's son's house, gets raped and you want justice.

Which land can 4m Naira buy? Lol. How many Old people are suffering because there is no system in place for them for life after retirement? That's even if they lived a worthy life before retirement. The state of unhealthy foods in Nigerian restaurants with no regulations in place? The smoke you inhale every day from horrible buses and cars that should never be on the roads!

My God, if we start talking about reasons to leave Nigeria, I'll be 95 before I stop. What business if I may ask can you set up in Nigeria with 4m Naira? (Please don't talk about open a sports betting shop/importing goods from dubai, selling oil, rice, garri and those 16th century business ideas). Do you know how many people have invested and failed, with customers owing them all over? You can't even track a customer down, sue to court to get your money back, etc.

You shouldn't compare a working system to a non-existent system. I'd choose life here in the U.S with NO savings but a roof over my head in a rented apartment, my kids in school, food on my table, etc., over living in even Lekki as a landlord and being at the mercy of a failed country and leaders.

Good lord, educate yourself! Do you know it's illegal for your kids to not go to school? The average American kid goes to school!!! Can read AND write. You constantly have to prove you're fit to be a parent else you lose custody of your kids. How many kids are in Makoko, suffering and have no idea what the future holds?

Don't get me started. "People are overseas for 20 years but don't have even a room here" . How is this a yardstick to measure a fulfilled life? Some people in Nigeria have never even seen a dishwasher/washer/drier before. Many think using them is "Lazy", haha... basic things that make life easy. I'll just leave you to your mindset.

Again, your reasons for deciding to stay is best known to you. Don't let blind patriotism cloud your good judgment.

Finally, you have absolutely no clue how WORTHLESS the Nigerian passport is. As they always say, a good name is better than gold and silver. Get into a fight with any Foreigner (American/European for example) in that Nigeria of yours and let your police judge the matter. You'll know how useless the country is.

I don't know how old your are not but nairaland tells me you had written jamb for times as of April 2009. l was in secondary school then. Fast forward to 2018 you are still roaming in nairaland. Sorry man, we all have different destinations and well as different level of acumen which age had no effect.
As for my plans, its still on course. Thank God for nairaland, l have three wonderful friends in a sector/niche i discovered and they all advised l get into the field first and get first hand experience.
You claim companies with millions are shutting down and you forget many companies even those without millions are skyrocketing. Businesses are found everyday and businesses die everyday. Do you need me to mention such companies is naija with high margin of profits in first quarter of 2018.
The richest black man has no single room outside his country, did make it because he took a flight or experienced life out his country.
l can only sympathize with you. That's all l can do. Be humble, learn, see opportunities and try to grab one. Read books, people's biography, get inspired and get ideas. see opportunities in everything you do even ordinary conversation with someone. Ask yourself, how will this talk profits me. There is no harm in trying. l wish you the best bro. l'm proudly igbo blood. Everything is an opportunity.

Quit the chest beating. No one is interested in the informations you are spilling out. This is a faceless forum and you can be assured that you haven't accomplished anything yet, and won't get no accolades.

Many in here have seen it all. The op has travelled out of the shores and is reeling out what life feels like for a naturalised immigrant in the USA. In just few posts, you have spilled and divulged enough unnecessary bunkum. No one gives a damn about what you are or planning to be.

This thread is to prep and let those who have dreams of moving out for greener pastures to make the right plans and take their chances and it just might be greener on the other side. While you are completely entitled to your oppinions, your unnecessary posturing around wishy washy tales and fantasies aren't needed on this thread as it defeats the purpose of this thread.

I envy you. you still have age by your side and already working hard at this age. You built 3m business in 7 months from nothing. l wonder why it slipped off you. The country is hard but there are opportunities as well. You can try again or better go for you masters. With you are by 25/26 you are done while doing something
