Knowledge is not a function of age or residency

I don't have to be in the US to be able to read and understand a simple MBA employment report. I don't have to be in the US to connect with African students in different schools and get first-hand info from them. I don't have to be in the US to ask successful African MBAs in different industries for career guidance. The "gurus" you are referring to do not even know how an MBA employment report looks like.

So keep patronizing people who know nothing about what you're seeking and keep confusing yourself.

There are lots of places and people you can connect and get legit MBA info; not from people who have never filled an MBA application form in their lives. Information is free in this 21st century

Lol, let me remind you that this is the 21st century
You don't need to be in the US to talk about stuffs in the US
And if I want to learn about MBA experience, I won't seek the advice of an Engineer who hasn't filled an MBA application form in his life before

Textbook or online data and reality can be opposite ......

People love a sucess story so you can have a class of 100, 2 share their marvellous sucess story, the 98 that are crying unko or go back quietly . They never share their story so the 2 results skews the TRUE picture

Experience is always the best teacher , years later trust me you understand after going to the said school doesnt always translate to open doors . Yes it can but it doesn't mean it always happens

There are other factors as some with lesser schools with no student loan sneak in and grab the biggest cake .

@ Femi321 I'll let the matter slide. The first thing when giving a counter-argument is to understand the point of the original argument. As you have stated that you didn't understand the point I tried to make in what I wrote, I'll let it go. smiley

We've both made our points known. You're saying going for STEM courses would help someone's odds of achieving the American dream, and that's good. I'm saying people who can't go that path shouldn't beat themselves up and think they'd never succeed here, that's all.

Like you asked, "does THIS law favor students in those disciplines?". You're right, it may not favor them. I'm sure you know there are other laws that could favor them and this is where thinking OUTSIDE the box comes into play.

Thank you. smiley

When you have permament papers in any country then yes you can follow your passion and do what you like.. in some countries you can decide to watch Tv the whole day and claim benefit .

When you don't and have Nigerian passport tongue then society trend dictates what possible and what limiting. .......

let be real to those who haven't travelled...... and not create false hopes . Except they adjust status later on, the law / trend doesnt favour a lot of pathway following the f1h1b route . If you like remove the Box self and think from today till tommorrow

Anyone coming to the US to school should please and please choose thier course wisely. The system favors particular courses for international students. That’s a fact and sad reality.
Please can you help with identifying these kind of courses grin

I have only 1 question. Please just answer yes or no. Can someone come here as a student and make it here without studying a STEM course and going the OPT/H1B route? Don't explain, just say yes or no.

Are you applying to a business school?

If yes, then read on
If no, you may want to verify more before taking the advice

For business school admissions, anybody you've worked with in any capacity can give you a letter of recommendation. So that makes your boss qualified to give you recommendation.

Make sure the person knows you well and can speak extensively about you. That's what matters. The rank (CEO, Professor, PhD, HOD, Vice Chancellor) doesn't matter. What matters is the content.

Shalom
No I'm not applying for business school; but does it still counts if he recommends me? I just don't want to travel the long journey and beg this doctors and professor whom I have not seen nor call in years to recommend me. They will just bounce me.
Anyway thanks for the reply. Plz I need you guys to shed more light on this.

I greet everyone, please i need advice.

I tried to calculate GPA using free WES calculator, when i type in all the courses i did for 5yrs in engineering and click calculate the WES calculator will return me to the first page for me start all over again. I have done this several times.

But if i just do it year by year i will get the calculations, also that is how it is done in my transcript, after first year they get the cgpa, like that for 5yrs then the average is 2.87/5.

My problem is that when i did WES year by year and take the average for 5yrs i get gpa 2.822 which i assume is now on 4point scale.

Which means my cgpa of 2.87/5 is now gpa 2.822/4

Am i getting it all wrong, remember if i put all the 5yrs courses in WES calculator it keep returning me back to first page.

Please anyone can contribute ,thanks in advance.

Ok,
Can i assume that the GPA on 4 point scale will be a little bit more than what it is on 5 point scale for my 5yrs engineering program?

Please reply, thanks

YES

A friend of mine Nigerian who studied Bsc med tech (outside of the US) ...went visiting on holiday to the U.S. and saw a med tech night shift job in a remote location. ...night shift only . She probably was the only applicant...lol . Applied got in and they filed her h1b ... barely 2 years they filed her green card

She had her green card and moved on to clinical research CRA making good money. So she defined the stat that she didn't spend a cent on been a master student and was in the US on b1b2

Does that mean that the general demograph story ... nope. But there are always one or two . It is extermely difficult but one or two get lucky out of a thousand

Cool stuff. In addition I believe as students/young adults, we shouldn't forget the power of networking. It helps in our journey in several ways.

This is the reason we should always network here before going there, most of us here are planning to go and some are there already. Those that are in the US already should help in welcoming we JJC (jolly just come).

That is the power of networking

Just to add to folmus comment's, you dont need any gre lesson to ace the test. Many people did it on the GRE thread and they aced it. If you ask me I believe GRE lesson is a waste of time and money because only you know your strenght and weakness. The instructor might end up concentrating on your stenght because you might not be the only one in the class. You don't need to study all the materials in the link. For quant use Nova Gre, 6 Manhattan series and ETS 150 quant. For verbal use Barron, ETS 150 verbal and maybe add kaplan or grubber. For AW just head to kaplan AW section. Also learn new words using any word listbor apo. Note that my advice is based on my experience along time ago things might have changed. Its also advisable you head to the GRE thread on the educational section of Nairaland, you can use this search words (gre 'nairaland') on Google if you cant locate it

Yes you can get recommendation from your boss, but be sure to get at least one academic recommendation. Your project supervisor can recommend you as well.
