Can Simy resolve Super Eagles goalscoring headache?
By Solace Chukwu, Correspondent

The Crotone striker's rich vein of form has made many sit up and take notice, with the Mundial just over a month away

One would think that an event as huge as the World Cup couldn't possibly creep up on you, and yet it has. In five weeks, Russia and Saudi Arabia will set the ball rolling in Moscow.

It'll be three days later till Nigeria kick off against Croatia, but the fact remains that it's already at the door. Yet, unlike one might expect, there remain a number of question marks around the Super Eagles squad.

World Cups are often considered the culmination of a cycle, four years of preparation building up to one month of execution. It wasn't until 2016, though, that Gernot Rohr came on board and kicked off his rebuild of the national side. As such, Nigeria has pretty much only had half the preparation time—it is understandable that it does not have everything figured out.
One such area where clarity seems to be lacking is in the centre-forward position.

Rohr largely favoured a 4-2-3-1 throughout qualifying, and while he has experimented with the team's shape in recent friendlies, that is arguably his most trusted scheme. The band of attacking midfielders is set in stone: John Obi Mikel is the captain and fulcrum, while Victor Moses and one of either Moses Simon or Alex Iwobi occupy the wide positions. But the identity of the standard bearer up top is in a bit of flux.

The recent friendlies against Poland and Serbia have sparked some concern, as the Super Eagles struggled mightily in attack, and only found the back of the net once in both games: a debatable penalty won and converted by talisman Moses.

While some of that can be explained by a more complex circumstance than simply the identity of the nominal striker, that sudden sense of uncertainty has led to a number of different candidates being thrown about for a late entrance into the World squad.
Enter Simeon Nwankwo , known simply as 'Simy'. The Crotone striker, at 25, has come into a rich vein of form in recent weeks, on target five times in his last five games to aid the Sharks' push to avoid relegation. It is inevitable, then, that his name has come up.

However, there are a few caveats, one of which is that his total tally isn't all that impressive.

He's scored six and assisted once in Serie A this term, and as stated earlier, five of them have come inside the past month. It is worth noting, though, that for long periods, he was not involved to any great degree: he's only played 930 minutes of league football, and so is contributing to a goal about every 130 minutes. That's respectable enough.
It does raise two further concerns though, one of which is a germane debate on the merits of form leading into major tournaments.

It is something of a paradox: while consistency over an extended period is invariably a greater measure of a player's quality, form - especially on the eve of major tournaments - might be more useful, seeing as a World Cup only runs for a month.

So, do you favour a better player or a hotter one?

The other thing to consider is exactly why it is that a player capable of scoring five in five and infusing life into Crotone's survival push has been in the cooler for so long. To an extent, the answer to this also is the greatest caveat re:Simy - as a footballer, he is not particularly impressive.

His standout quality is his frankly ridiculous frame. He stands at 6ft 6in, and could conceivably be one of the tallest outfield players were he to make it to the World Cup. Naturally, such a profound advantage would make him a handful and a headache for defenders, if he weren't so painfully static.

There is a concern over how well he fits together with the rest of the team, and his shot numbers - averaging a measly 1.35 per game - do not suggest anything particularly earth-shaking. He is lacking in pace, can be clumsy with his footwork as well, and at 0.4 dribbles per game, he cannot be relied upon to carry the ball.

Indeed, one might say that the combination of Crotone's desperation, Simy's sheer size, and the chaos factor it can foment inside the box, may have been the tipping factors in his sudden return to the starting line-up.

Even held up against some of his competitors, he doesn't compare well. He lacks the work rate and hard, selfless running of Brown Ideye, the technical aptitude of Kelechi Iheanacho, or the finishing ability of Odion Ighalo. Tactically, he also does not fit the Super Eagles' counter-attacking style.

Stranger things have happened, of course, but in all, it is difficult to see just how exactly Simy's skillset aids the team in terms of goalscoring.

I watched highlights of Lokosa to see what the hype was about and i was roundly disappointed. Odey and Egbuchulam had better highlights... Apart from the horrendous defending, there was nothing to see as they were mostly tap ins.

i haven't seen his highlights, but sometimes scoring tap ins is not a bad thing, it shows he has good positioning

look at cr7, he has world class strike partners by his side, but he seems to be the only that scores tap ins among them.

1 is cool but not aggressive.
2 Is too long though it carries a strong message.
3 Could have been perfect if the sentence can be reconstructed but still keeping the key words "wings" and " African Pride". I would have preferred some thing like: "WINGS OF NIGERIA, PRIDE OF AFRICA". And with the Eagle's wings printed on the Bus.

Not in the NPFL...

If i saw great movement, i would have mentioned it... It was fairly basic stuff aided by naive defending and goalkeeping

I have a friend that traveled to Europe for trials. He played as a right winger in Nigeria. The coach did not give him chance to play in his favourite position but used him as wing back, an unfamiliar roe to him. He struggled withthe unfamiliar role. That was how he failed the trial.

Any player doing well in Europe should be given a chance to prove himself.

He doesn't fit or fit into the system of play is a way of giving a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

I don't believe in such ideology.

Though he may be right about his lack of pace, clumsy foot work and almost zero dribbles but he should be tried.

I noticed he lacks pace in one of the YouTube he scored twice in the match. The second goal showed he is lacking in pace because he would have scored the goal by racing towards the goalkeeper after the pass he received placed him ahead of the last defender but due to lack of pace two defenders still cut up with him and blocked his target hence the need for him to turn them an place the ball in the net. He did well by using his brain but he can't do that with better defenders.

However, he and those currently doing well should be given a chance to prove himself. That's all.

Coaches don’t see it as injustice to a player if they THINK the player cannot bring what they need in the team. But I’m not going to run with what Solace has just said. There must be other strong points in Simy besides his height.

Salah’s quality is not debatable. But Simy’s is.
6 goals in a season is not impressive and to make matters worse he just started scoring. A coach may not be convinced enough even with his OK goals per minute ratio. There is no guarantee he would have banged goals if he was given more minutes earlier in the season. Seeing something is believing. Anything else Is just an assumption. And to add to that if what Solace said is true it’s a typical reason why many coaches may turn their back on a player — for the general good of the team.

NOTHING is good here, it is sad that after 27 years, Egypt returns to the WC with shiit slogans that can't even ginger a six-year old. That last one is particularly daft...why will we get up and listen? Is this football or a music concert? Listen to what? Vuvuzelas?

So I just went to the FIFA website to see the slogans and I agree with Joebie, they are all HORRIBLE.

ARGENTINA

MAGIA EN MOVIMIENTO
Magic on the move

Really? Magic? Is the Argentine team a circus? Are we going to a magic show?

Australia
ONLY THOSE WHO SHARE OUR PASSION UNDERSTAND OUR PRIDE

This is so plain, so dispassionate. Nothing here should give anyone pride, it can be said with a straight face

Belgium (Nothing is Good here)

Be Fast Be Good Be Belgium !

This one sounds like the lines from a Car advertisement. I mean, you can remove Belgium there and put Hyundai and it would make more sense

From Belgium with Love

I dunno, is it a wedding card? Is it someone's birthday? Besides, isn't that the title of a movie? Only, it's From Paris, not From Belgium

Red Devils on a mission

First team I would think of is Manchester United, obviously!

Brazil

Costa Rica

UN EQUIPO, UN PAÍS, UNA PASIÓN, VAMOS SELECCIÓN
ONE TEAM, ONE COUNTRY, A PASION, GO TEAM

This one is painful to read, because it would have been perfect without the addition of "Go Team" that line just spoilt the rest of it

Croatia

Joebie:
Salah’s quality is not debatable. But Simy’s is.
6 goals in a season is not impressive and to make matters worse he just started scoring. A coach may not be convinced enough even with his OK goals per minute ratio. There is no guarantee he would have banged goals if he was given more minutes earlier in the season. Seeing something is believing. Anything else Is just an assumption. And to add to that if what Solace said is true it’s a typical reason why many coaches may turn their back on a player — for the general good of the team.

Then you should not have generalized by lumping all players together.

If Simy's case is what you meant, I can understand to some extent but I don't agree a coach should drop any good player because he 'thinks' the player can't bring anything to the team. Mbanu!

However, Simy and those doing well should be given the chance to prove themselves.

Simi is work at early stage of progress
The dude has a lot to prove, so he should prove himself first but not in this WC
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2023, 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Joebie: 9:54am On May 05, 2018
It wasn’t a generalization. That was your interpretation. If Rohr drops Agu — for example — just because he is not adding much to the team, despite him being highly regarded by his club coach (and this is an example), would that amount to injustice?
The question is does Rohr feel Simy can bring something to the team? That’s left for him to decide. It’s not a question of dropping Simy since he’s not been in the scheme of things. At the end of the day, personal ambition is secondary. If any player is really good individually, that player also needs to be really good working with the team.

Coaches don’t see it as injustice to a player if they THINK the player cannot bring what they need in the team. But I’m not going to run with what Solace has just said. There must be other strong points in Simy besides his height.

You said and I quote 'Coaches don't see it as an injustice to' A PLAYER....... '.

That is obviously generalization which is totally unacceptable.

Except you admit you erred big time in that part to have generalized.

That's my bro!!!

Ive come to some conclusions of sorts that no footballer would ever want to take risk for club and miss the world club. forget UCL and Europa. who cares is the mentality. see Ozil... His way of playing changed after Koscielny showed he would miss the world cup with that Achilles. Even Griezmann was weeping on the pitch. Let Ronaldo and Co keep dominating Europe o the world cup dem no go smell atall.

So every world cup year, players get too cautious and I don't expect them to risk injury in the name of club loyalty. Lol.

In the spirit of unity, I can sense Iwobi may be performing wack in training to avoid selection for such a team that can't even use sense when playing.

In the spirit of unity it is!!! grin

Your analogy is floored in regards to Agu because the coach didn't ignore his performance in his club and refused to invite him to the National team just because he 'THINKS' Agu can't bring anything to the team. Rather, based on his performance in his club, the coach invited and tried him in his preferred role for him and the world to see if he could bring something to the team before he arrived at a logical conclusion devoid of logical errors in drawing conclusions from mere assumptions based on 'THINKING' or 'THOUGHT' which is inconsequential inconsistent with established fact. That is the point.

So, that should be the factor to invite Simy and others doing well before you hang them with mere 'THINKING'
