Almajiri is derived from the Arabic “Almuhajirun”, meaning an emigrant. It usually refers to a person who migrates from the luxury of his home to other places or to a popular teacher in the quest for Islamic knowledge.

Islamic education in Hausaland began as early as the eleventh century and By fifteen century the reputation of some Hausa state capitals(Borno, Katsina, Kano) as Muslim metropolis was already high enough to attract many students and scholars.

Sokoto Caliphate at the beginning of the 19th century provided an enabling environment for the growth of education, It was an organized and comprehensive system of education for learning Islamic principles, values, jurisprudence and theology. In the early years of colonial rule, British colonial officials in Northern Nigeria were fascinated by the existence of a formal system of Islamic education. According to the 1931 census figures, 30,000 - 35,000 Islamic schools were enrolling 200,000-360,000 pupils (Hubbard,1975). The system was funded by the state treasury and the state zakka funds, and was under the control of the emirs of the traditional government system that existed before the coming of the British.

The Amajiri system, though funded was not over dependent on the state. The students were at liberty to acquire a vocational and occupational skill in between their Islamic lessons and so were involved in farming, fishing, well construction, masonry, production, trade, tailoring. Many of them were the farmers of the northern Nigerian cotton and groundnut pyramids. They formed the majority of the traders in the commercial city of Kano(Dantata..) They were the leather tanners and bags makers in the old Sokoto Empire, the cap weavers nd Taylors in Zaria city.

They provided the colonial administration with the needed staff. The first set of colonial staff(clerks, judges. in Northern Nigeria was provided by the Almajiri schools and this went on for years. Before they were gradually replaced. Almajiri teachers and their pupils also freely provided their community with Islamic Education, they were responsible for development of Ajami i.e. reading and writing in Arabic alphabets.

In 1904, the British invaded and colonized the northern Nigeria territories and took control of the state treasury, The British also refused to recognize the Almajiri education system as an important education system and deliberately abolished it.

Circumstantially all the learned people who were at the helm of affairs in pre colonial north, were considered illiterates, making them not only unemployed but unqualified to be employed despite being able to read and write.

The care of the Almajiri became overwhelmingly burdensome for the Mallams who were left with no choice but to send these little boys out to beg from the good will of the society. To make end meet, some of these Mallams began to impose on the Almajiri levies, begging and doing menial jobs are now the way of life for them, the system is broken and unproductive All you see now are hungry, malnourished, wounded, sad looking kids.

Yeah this is a nice read. At least it will enlightened one or two ignorant folks about the word called "almajiri". Many commentators here usually use the word to ridicule northerners, even without knowing what the word really means.

You call me almajiri and you think I will take offence? Neah. You think almajiri is a derogatory word which you think should be used to insult someone who is more opinionated than you, and who never shares the same opinion(s) with you?

Ludicrous I will say......

Yah they fought but unfortunately some of them were defeated by the arabs, after they were defeated they were arabized.Thats why pipu can't differentiate between them ad arabs.

Yeah it's a matter of domination..whites dominated us ad gave us freedom but if they were arabs I don't think that we would have been free by now.

It makes alot of sense. The Almajiri system was alot more organized before the colonials and trust the colonials. Anything they don't understand, they outlaw. Meanwhile can the young Northern nairalanders who have this understanding start initiatives to get these little children off the streets like canvassing NGOs to build school and vocational centres for this unfortunate children of a failed and wicked society. Those unguarded little children who are now used as election materials by greedy politicians are a time bomb exploding very soon.
