The greatest generators of waste are commercial buildings. The state needs to focus on markets, commercial areas and multi tenant buildings. Get them to pay waste fees and pay private operators to clear their rubbish.

ON GOING CLEAN UP @ OSE MARKET ONITSHA

Great effort to clean up.

One hopes that all the dirt removed from the gutters onto the roads will be cleared up quickly by the environmental sanitation truck.

The usual practice is to bring dirt from the gutters to the road and then leave it there for the rains to wash them back into the gutter and everything returns to square one grin grin grin Africa and the way Africans operate is one of the funniest phenomena i have studied in my life.

Anambra State government has marked the tomb of Blessed Father Cyprian Iwene-Tansi’s in Aguleri as a religious site that would be developed into a major tourist attraction in the state.

Mrs Sally Mbanefo, Commissioner for Indigenous Art Works, Diaspora Affairs, Culture and Tourism in Anambra has said the government was determined to make the tourism industry a revenue spinner for the state, and the tomb is one of the favoured sites.

Mbanefo who has been on tour of the potential tourism sites said the Blessed Iwene Tansi tomb and Obu Gad, the historical origin of the Igbo people in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra would be made tourists destinations.

The former Director General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) said she would use her experience in the tourism industry to activate and turnaround the tourism potentials of Anambra.

She said the tourism sector in Anambra had the potential to drive the economy of the state, just as tourism has the potential to drive the economy of any nation adding that her tour of the various tourism sites in the state was to enable her have first hand information of what Anambra was endowed with in the sector.

The Obu Gad site believed to be where, Eri, the ancestor of Igbo settled which had already been acclaimed an international tourism site would be made a world class tourist’s destination.

“We are going to make sure that the tomb of Blessed Iwene Tansi is turned into a religious tourism site.

“Tourism is the greatest employer of labour and it contributes alot to GDP of other countries of the world.

“So my vision here is to use my wealth experience to make Anambra center of Tourism in Nigeria,” she said.

Similarly the Commissioner said the facelift works at the Owerre Ezukala Cave and Water Falls in Orumba South Local Government Area would be completed within the first 100 days of Gov. Willie Obiano’s second term.

She said the state government was extending invitation of partnership to foreign investors in the development of tourism sector of the state.

“We want to invite international community for them to see what we have to offer and then we can partner with them in developing these natural tourist sites, in terms of building hospitality and recreational facilities.

“We have the full support of the governor; he has shown commitment in the growth of this sector and he is ready to back up our plans with finances because it has been provided for in the budget.

“His Excellency governor has approved the construction of staircases in Owerre Ezukala, plans are already at top gear because we want to conclude this within the first 100 days.

“So we are drumming up awareness in the state and the country so others people will know what we are doing and come here to enjoy themselves,” she said.

Igwe Chukwuemeka Eri, the traditional ruler of Enugu-Aguleri, who received the commissioner to the ancient town congratulated her on her appointment and expressed confidence that she had the technocracy to revamp the sector.

Chukwuemeka Eri urged the state government to promote the Aguve Tree otherwise known as Trinity Tree by documenting all the historical evidences of its mysterious nature and stores behind it and Obu Gad.

Enugu city is larger geographically than Onitsha and Awka so transport costs should be higher since you are going longer distances with fewer people per trip. Anambra cities are denser. So people squeeze 18 people in a hiace meant for 12 people or 5 in a keke meant for 3. The solution for Anambra is higher capacity vehicles plying high traffic routes not lots of undersized commercial vehicles. Where planning comes in is establishing routes and scheduling not yielding to lawlessness. ANSG can get transport consultants that could do this for it cheaper than the blackheads in the ministries.

He is 100% correct. Anambra state government were too myopic to open up new layouts in Onitsha and environs reason why people relocated to Asaba.
Oba old road and Nsugbe shout have been opened up long ago but our mediocre governors couldn't.

Of course Onitsha is twice more populated than Enugu, Awka and Abakaliki combined. Enugu is more spread out because it has good dual carriage roads leading to the outskirts of town for a very long time. Onitsha only had the Enugu-Onitsha express way and that is why development was on that axis. The Onitsha -Owerri road was just dualized less than 10 years ago and it has helped a lot. People moved to Asaba because Onitsha became impossible to expand due to lack of major dual carriage roads away from the city.

The 33 (Trans-Nkisi) road to Umuleri needs to be dualized too ASAP. Obiano promised that during his re-election campaign. We have to see if that promise is kept. It will help decongest Onitsha and make living in the northern axis of the city a feasible option for the state. Dualization of the 33 (Trans-Nkisi) road from Onitsha to Umuleri or Aguleri will be the single greatest contribution of Obiano to the development of Anambra state.

I wish obiano can see all this your right ups. We need dualization of all our major roads in anambra most especially in onitsha, awka and nnewi. The population in anambra state is increasing rapidly and we also need a good and modern transport system like mini train, cable train e.t.c

Done! All already in the 2018 budget. More big roads and bridges/flyovers will be added this year to the fleets of the existing ones.

Obiano to dualise major roads, construct more bridges in 2nd term

Governor Willie Obiano has assured that his administration would dualise major roads in Nnewi, Awka and Onitsha during his second term to ensure a free flow of traffic and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the cities.

Speaking during a town hall meeting with key stakeholders and opinion leaders in the state at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka, Governor Obiano announced that eight more bridges would be constructed in the three senatorial districts of the state to strengthen its infrastructural backbone.

According to the governor, all these have been factored into the state’s 2018 budget and the implementation will start immediately the budget is passed by the state House of Assembly.

Governor Obiano further revealed that his administration had commenced the installation of 33kva high tension line from Awada, Obosi to Nnewi North and South Local Government Areas, adding that the project would cover 33 communities in Nnewi North and South, as well as some parts of Idemili and Ihiala Local Government Areas.

He noted that major industries in the state were located in the benefitting communities and explained that his government decided to undertake it because of the impact it would have on its industrialisation blue print.

He assured that when completed, the project would help achieve 15 to 16 hours-per-day power supply in the communities, promising that it would be completed within one month.

I have heard too many nonsense talk about how to build Dubai and Los Angeles in Southeast.
Truth is that those talks are either deliberately deceitful, or folks don't know a thing about how great cities evolve.

The foundation of every great city isn't necessarily building skyscrapers from day one, but adequately planning the city very well to ensure development occurs evenly and future developments can still occur without destroying the city.

Roads and use of roundabouts at every road intersection is critical. Many new African and Asian cities already know this and build new areas of their cities with lots of roundabouts to compensate for lack of power to operate traffic lights as we see in American cities.

The plan below should be adopted as a model for city expansion. By the way, this is Palmas which is the capital city of the state of Tocantins, Brazil. This is their city extension plan and you can see their generous use of roundabouts. This is how Southeast cities should plan new areas for expansion.

Demolition of illegal structures and shanties continues in Onitsha...

Today, the Taskforce led by the Honourable Commissioner for Road, Rail and Water Transportation, Hon Uchenna Okafor Wiper on foot toured the whole streets of Ajasa - New Market Road -Bright Street Main Market - Bida - Emeka Offor Section - Nottidge terminating at Egerton Street inspected the level of compliance by the general public.

The team met on ground the Chairman of Onitsha North LGA, Hon Pat Agha Mba and his enforcement unit members facilitating the inspection. Particularly around numbers 4, 5 6, some petty traders were seen displaying wares on drainages, the Commissioner safely guarded their wares and the shanties were destroyed instantly.

Mrs Nkiru Nwankwo who has a property at No 6 Ajasa in a special way appreciated the working government of His Excellency Chief Dr Willie Obiano stressing that as a landlady, she cannot park her vehicle inside her compound because of street traders. According to her, the inhabitants of Onitsha will forever remain grateful to Gov Obiano for breaking this jinx.

ONITSHA(AFRICANWORLD NEWSPAPER)

In the 2006 Nigerian census, Onitsha city had an estimated resident population of over half a million people, and, as of 2016, has an estimated metropolitan population of 7,425,000. The indigenous people of Onitsha are Igbo and speak the Igbo language. The Onitsha people like to be referred to as Ndi Onicha.

Onitsha, port and market town in Anambra State, Southern Nigeria, lies on the east bank of the Niger River just south of its confluence with the Anambra River.
It grew to become the political and trading centre of the small Igbo (Ibo) kingdom of Onitsha. Its monarchical system (rare among the Igbo people) was patterned after that of Benin. An Obi (“king”) negotiated in 1857 with William Balfour Baikie, a British trader, for the establishment of a British trading post in the
town.
Onitsha remains the chief entrepôt for goods coming upstream from the Niger River Delta and those transported downstream from towns on the Niger and Benue rivers.
Roads lead to the town from Enugu and Owerri, and the completion in 1965 of the 4,606-foot (1,404-metre) bridge across the Niger River to Asaba provides Onitsha with a direct road link to Benin City and Lagos.
Palm oil and kernels are the most important local exports, but yams, cassava (manioc), corn (maize), citrus fruits, palm produce, rice, taro, fish, and beef also are traded in the Onitsha market. The market building, one of the largest in Nigeria, was destroyed in 1968 in the Nigerian Civil War (1967–70), but it was rebuilt.
The town is the site of the Roman Catholic Holy Trinity Cathedral (1935) and the Anglican All Saints Cathedral (1952). Its oldest secondary schools, including the Dennis Memorial Grammar School (1925; Anglican), St. Charles Teacher Training College (1929; Roman Catholic), and Christ the King College (1933; Roman Catholic), are noted for their academic excellence.
Onitsha is also known for the annual Ofala Festival, which honours the Obi. Onitsha’s industries include tire retreading, sawmilling, printing, and soft-drink bottling. A textile plant is located on an industrial estate south of the town near the bridge.
The Onitsha people were among the first Igbos to embrace Western education, producing notable people like Dr Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria's first President, Dr Chike Obi, a renowned mathematician, Louis Mbanefo, Chief Justice of Biafra, Ben Enwonwu, famous sculpture, Ukpabi Asika, East-Central administrator after the civil war, Olisa Agbakogba, lawyer and human rights activist, and leader of Nigeria's first coup, Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna.

When dirty is brought out from the gutters and used to litter the streets, i don't know if its a good idea at all.

I pray, and hope and plead that the rubbish brought out of these gutters be evacuated into a tipper and discharged somewhere else rather than left of the streets as eyesore.

If the rains meet these rubbish on the street, it will disperse them and make the streets even more dirty and in the absence of street sweepers, they will finally end up in the gutters again. Thus, work done = zero

We just need to BAN desilting gutters and putting the trash on the street because it is counter productive. I feel sad just watching evacuation of trash onto the street knowing that in their minds, that is the end of what they should be doing. They will NEVER return to evacuate the trash they put on the streets.

Let those of us in Onitsha and environs please track and report this continuously so that they don't abandon these trash on the street.

In the future, we should begin a practice of bringing a trash truck so that the rubbish is directly dumped on the truck instead of using them to deface the road for a few weeks before a good Samaritan comes to evacuate them (IF WE ARE LUCKY)

Every city is unique, when Awka was declared a capital, successive governments tried mapping out a master plan for the future city which it of course did unlike Onitsha which initially was believed to be within Onitsha North and South LGAs but since had so expanded and encompassing other towns due to the massive influx of people in recent times. This I guess caught the state government unawares and it has been trying its best to amend the situation.
