frumentius: And of course, one has to admire the response of the Rwandese, led by Col. Kabarebe, after their setback/rout in Kinshansa: The Rwandans and their allies pulled back into the hills, where they regrouped and took stock of their plight. They were dangerously short of supplies, their line of retreat was cut, and they were more than a thousand kilometers inside hostile country. FAC and Angolan troops were converging on them from east and west. One by one, they recaptured Muanda, Boma, Inga, Buama, and Matadi. The contingent had only one choice - exfiltration. But from where? The nearest airfield was north, across the Congo River in Congo-Brazzaville. This was not a viable option, given the lack of barges and that country's alignment with Angola. Looking over a map, Kabare spotted a small regional airport across the Angolan border at Maquela do Zombo. UNITA rebels roamed this area during the Angolan Civil War and it remained largely uncontrolled by Luanda.

bidex111: I knew that was what Nigeria wanted to do. They will mount PAVE II system and APKWS from the Super Tucano deal on all AW 109 choppers. They will have utility choppers more effective than MI 35M for one fifth of the price. AW 109 is just $7m. Nigerian registered companies can maintain it. There are many pilots ready to fly it. It can carry FLIR for night ops, TOW missiles and 20mm canons. Obviously they want to put the MI 35Ms on lower rate of delivery whilst stacking up on the more reliable, cheap, very versatile and higher technology AW 109. The Filipino Air Force had the right idea from the start that we are borrowing from. Since Boko Haram font just operate from distant outposts like Sambisa but the action is now moving to semi rural areas and even urban areas, then lighter, cheaper, more agile and more accurate delivery choppers are increasingly being required. Sometimes you want to take out vehicles with precision strike, disembark troops to engage whilst staffing the enemy with canons and machine guns. The AW 109 will do everything. And you can take it to the hangar and convert it to VIP transport the next day for Oga's inspection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IHhhi7xhgs 2 Likes |

SternProphet: And how will this make it more effective than a mi-35m? The mi-35m 2ill fire guided rockets, can carry troops who will engage with guns, will fire atgm and offers better attack capability at a longer range. What are you saying? |

NAF 54TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS END WITH CEREMONIAL PARADE, AERIAL DISPLAY AS NEW MI-35M HELICOPTER GUNSHIPS ARE UNVEILED The 2018 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Day Celebration came to a close yesterday, 5 May 2018, at the NAF Base Kaduna, with a colourful ceremonial parade and aerial display of some of the platforms in the NAF inventory. Some of the aircraft that took part in the display include the Alpha Jet, L-39ZA, F-7Ni, Super Mushshak, King Air 350i and the Diamond 42 MPP. The others were the Mi-35M Helicopter, Super Puma Helicopter, Bell 412 Helicopter as well as the recently inducted indigenous Tsaigumi Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). During the ceremonial parade that preceded the aerial display, the regimental colours of the erstwhile Training Command (TC) was retired while the newly established Air Training Command (ATC) and Ground Training Command (GTC) were presented with their regimental colours. Regimental colours serve as the rallying point of a unit in battle and it is significant because its loss to the enemy is seen as a significant dishonour. Furthermore, the 2 recently acquired Mi-35M Helicopter gunships were unveiled by the Special Guest of Honour (SGOH), President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by the Honourable Minister of Defence (HMOD), Mansur Dan Ali. In his remarks, the SGOH commended the efforts of the current NAF leadership for performing its assignments wonderfully and noted that the NAF had, in recent times, recorded several unprecedented milestones. The President expressed his delight at having to come to the NAF Base Kaduna to celebrate the NAF at 54. He pointed out that the NAF had evolved over the years since its establishment by an Act of Parliament in April 1964 while recalling that the NAF played a vital role in the successful prosecution of the Nigerian Civil war of 1967. “As a young Army Officer, I took part from the beginning to the end in the tragic Nigerian Civil War and I know the role the young NAF played in the successful prosecution of the war”, President Buhari added. He used the opportunity to appreciate the role of the NAF, in particular, and that of the military, in general, as an enabler of national development, which could never be overemphasized. He went further to commend the gallant men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies, for their tireless efforts towards completely eliminating the scourge of Boko Haram Terrorists and other threats to the nation’s security. Earlier In his welcome address, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, expressed satisfaction with how the NAF had evolved in the last 54 years. He stated that the NAF had faced a myriad of challenges over the years and had overcome many of them thereby becoming more matured in the process. He added that the NAF had also grown in size and equipment holding thus positioning it to better fulfill its statutory obligation of protecting and defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria by air. The CAS expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, for the outstanding growth experienced in the NAF since 2015, in particular. He revealed that 12 hitherto grounded aircraft had been reactivated while the personnel strength of the Service had been increased by 7,500 men and 400 officers, all in less than 3 years. The CAS said that since the beginning of President Buhari’s administration, 2 additional NAF Commands and 2 new Branches had been established. “Besides, several new platforms were acquired and inducted into Service to meet the evolving security challenges faced by the country”, the CAS added. Air Marshal Abubakar noted that the gap between force projection and force protection had also been substantially bridged with the training of about 1000 Special Forces. “These forces have been deployed as part of the intervention force to deal with the Internal Security challenges of the North Central geopolitical zone”, he stated. He further stated that the commitment of Mr President and the current administration to enhancing Nigeria’s security was clearly exemplified by the recent payment for 10 Super Tucano aircraft to be purchased from the United States of America. The CAS also recollected that the NAF recently took delivery of 10 Super Mushshak aircraft from Pakistan in addition to a total of 4 Mi-35M helicopter gunships procured from the Russian Federation. The high point of yesterday’s celebration was recorded when the various NAF aircraft flew past in various formations with the NAF L-39ZA aircraft returning to depict the Nigerian national colours of green white and green in the sky, with the aid of smoke canisters. In addition, some NAF Special Forces elements were inserted into the venue of the celebration through rappelling from the Super Puma Helicopter while the Mi-35M helicopter gunship provided simulated air cover. Furthermore, some NAF paratroopers jumped from a NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft at over 10,000 feet above sea level and thereafter landed in a drop zone already earmarked at the venue of the celebration. Members of the audience, including several civilians, who had come to felicitate with the NAF, were obviously delighted at the performance of the NAF personnel involved in the various displays. With yesterday’s activities, the 2018 NAF Day Celebration with the theme, ‘Enhancing Nigerian Air Force Operational Capability for Timely Employment of Air Power in Response to Contemporary Security Challenges’, effectively came to an end. The NAF now looks forward to celebrating its 55th Anniversary in 2019. OLATOKUNBO ADESANYA Air Vice Marshal Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force |

Boko Haram Attack Leaves at Least a Dozen Cameroonians Dead MABANDA, NORTHERN CAMEROON — Boko Haram fighters have attacked villages in the Far North region of Cameroon leaving at least a dozen dead, several soldiers wounded and the villages torched in a large operation involving hundreds of attackers, some of whom used villagers as human shields. Children gathered in little groups along the road shout to welcome the Cameroon military in Mabanda, a northern village on the border with Nigeria. It is one of the villages that suffered the latest Boko Haram assaults this week. 43-year old village elder Alihou Idrissu says groups of fighters infiltrated the faithful praying in Mosques and sellers and buyers on their market day Wednesday. He says one group of eight armed men invaded the Mosque while they were praying and ordered the Imam and all Muslims present to lead them to a nearby Cameroon military post. He says those who objected were killed. Idrissu says the militants operated for over two hours and killed at least 14 villagers whom they accused of failing to inform Boko Haram when Cameroon army arrived in their village ahead of raids on the insurgents' strongholds in the Sambissa forest last month. Jean Pierre Ndanga, a Cameroon military officer in Mabanda says they found it extremely difficult to fight back because the invaders were using villagers as human shields. He says when he ordered his troops to get down from their military jeep and move towards hundreds of villagers they saw marching towards the Mabanda village square, they suddenly heard gunshots and immediately understood that Boko Haram fighters were using the people as shields. He says he and many of the troops were wounded as they struggled to retreat to protect the villagers. Jean Pierre was rushed to the Mabanda health center alongside dozens of injured military and villagers. Laboratory technician Dieudonne Besong says they attended to all of the wounded without discrimination. He says many villagers had their lives saved thanks to the immediate intervention of health workers. He says four seriously wounded villagers were given the same surgical treatment as wounded military men. Cameroon's military says the militants fled to neighboring Nigeria after the attack but at least 7 of the insurgents were killed. Cameroon's semi-arid far North region has been a target of Boko Haram suicide bombings and raids for close to nine years as the Islamist insurgency spilled over the border from Nigeria, killing at least 25,000 in the Lake Chad basin shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The UN Refugee Agency estimates approximately 26 million people in the Lake Chad region have been affected by the Boko Haram violence, and more than 2.6 million displaced link https://www.voanews.com/a/boko-haram-attack-leaves-at-least-a-dozen-cameroonians-dead/4380889.html |
