PART 1
In a small quiet town rich with customs and values in the western part of Ekiti is a family. A polygamous home headed by the popular palm wine tapper in the early 1900s. Adekunbi is one of the well- known palm wine tapper in a small town called Ikogosi. Adekunbi is a successful palm wine tapper who was richly blessed with wisdom and riches. Adekanbi had just a wife named Jaiyesinmi. Jaiyesinmi was the second child of the Awele family. Her father, Chief Kalejaiye is the otun of Ikogosi land. Adekunbi, being a rich and influential man had Jaiyesinmi as his wife. Jaiyesinmi was known as a woman filled with pride because she is the only daughter of Chief Kalejaiye. After five years of a fruitless marriage, Adekunbi was forced to take in a second wife. Like it is popularly said in Yoruba land, “Ori omo lo n pomo waye” (It’s the head of a child that brings another child) Even though it was well believed that Jaiyesinmi”s wickedness caused her barrenness but she never take heed. Adekunbi had no choice than to succumb to the pressure from his family. Iwalewa came into the Adekunbi family and just after a year, Iwalewa conceived and gave birth to a baby boy. Jaiye prayed and performed so many sacrifices to Eledumare to answer her prayer and just some few months after, Jaiye conceived and gave birth to a baby boy. Adekunbi was happy that his first wife had finally conceived. Although, Jaiye expected Adekunbi to celebrate the naming ceremony of her child like that of Iwalewa but such never happened. This act of Adekunbi fueled the already suppressed spirit of anger and wickedness in Jaiyesinmi. In the eve of the naming ceremony of Jaiye’s child, Adekanbi in the company of his friends talked happily and under the influence of the palm wine in his system, he told his friends that Iwalewa’s child was going to be his heir because of Jaiye’s wickedness and the fear of transferring the act to her child too. Unknowing to Adekanbi, Jaiye was hiding at the back of the hut, hearing the discussion of her husband. Ever since then, the home of Adekunbi became a house on fire. The two wives at each other’s loggerhead, fighting on silly things all because Adekunbi has named his heir while he was still alive. These misunderstanding and fights happens occasionally and Adekunbi does nothing to stop the fight between the two women. Then one day something happened…

Part 2 So many years later… (Alarm ring) I had been having a nightmare but all thanks to this alarm. I felt a force taking me out of a deep well and the moment the alarm rang, I felt pulled out. My name is Kaye, born into the family of two, all males. My brother Tade, stays in Ekiti while I just finished my university program and I decided to go visit him since it’s over 3 years have seen him. It’s been two days that I’ve been staying with him and I suggested he should take me out. Where do you expect me to take you to? Tade asked Shoprite, film house, beach, anywhere! I replied him Yeyedey worry you. Where do you see all those in Ekiti? Tade replied. The house is boring bro! Do you want me to start packing my bags to Lagos? I asked Oya now…dey go or wait, will you like to visit Ikogosi? The water spring? (I jumped up from the bed) Oya now…I said Alright get set, in two hours’ time we will be leaving. He said and he left my room. 10.23am, we opt inside my brother’s SUV and started driving to Ikogosi. We passed through Odo-Ekiti along Ilawe road from the capital of Ekiti. 10 minutes into the journey, I spotted the crown polytechnic and also the palace of the king of IlaweEkiti. Soon, we were into ErijiyanEkiti. When we drove into the main town of Erijiyan, we saw some women dressed in colourful attire dancing around the town with drummers also. I wonder what they were celebrating though, but in no time, we got to a roundabout which linked us to IkogosiEkiti and my heart skipped some beats without no reasons. At 11.10am, we got to Ikogosi tourist centre. We paid for the ticket and we were led on the way. Two of their staffs were assigned to us to show us the way and to explain things we need to know. We walked on a wooden constructed bridge and after about a 5 minutes’ walk, we got to the meeting point of both waters. How mysterious! A warm water coming from the left and from the right comes the cold water and they intercept at a point. But after their interception, the water was warm. When I touched the water, I felt some electric current passed through me. I withdrew my hands immediately. None of the staff or my brother noticed this. The staff kept taking us round until he showed us to the source of the warm water. When we got there, he explained to us the importance of the water and how people all over the state and beyond had benefitted from it all this years. According to him, it cures headaches, stomach aches, dandruff and all other ailments. I didn’t know how I managed to get to the source of the warm water, I dipped my hands into it then I drank it and almost immediately the water got to my mouth, the weather changed like it was going to rain then everything went blank. To be continued…

I opened my eyes to see myself beside a palm tree on a Kijipa Short and a tattered cloth on me with a keg just some miles away from me. I scratched my head, dusted myself up and rested on the tree close to me. I couldn’t understand what was happening. At that moment of confusion, I was hearing the horn of a bicycle getting close to me. Within some seconds, it got to where I was and it stopped. I looked up and I found a middle aged man on his bicycle with two kegs filled water I guess which was well tied to the back of his bicycle. When he saw me, he came to me and asked in a strong Ekiti accent which I still wondered how I managed to understand what he was saying. Where am i? Where are we? I asked him Young man, where are you coming from? He asked me At this point, I was scratching my head, still thinking hard how I got here. I don’t know sir. I replied him. Come with me, come to my home. He said. I tagged along with him down to his house which was quite far from the place he met me. When we got to his house, he called his wife, Jaiyesinmi to prepare a room for me and also prepare pounded yam and Vegetable soup. He called his second wife, gave her one keg of palm wine to give the great hunter of the village, Akanbi for the exchange of two bush meat. After eating, the man called me to the front of his hut and we began talking. Young man he began. I am Adekanbi, the best palm wine tapper in this land. This is my home. I have two wives with two sons. What brought you to this land? He asked. I don’t know. I just found myself here. I replied Where do you live? He asked I can’t remember what happened. (Scratching my head) Don’t worry. You will remember everything as time goes on. Adekanbi said. For all the period of my stay with Adekanbi, he never for once have a peace of mind because the two wives are always at loggerhead, Jaiyesinmi being the major culprit. All these time of my stay there, the two wives never crossed each other’s path or ask of anything from each other. I stayed with Adekanbi and his family for some moon time before this faithful day. On this fateful day, Adekanbi had woken up quite early as usual to the farm to tap palm wine from palm trees. Jaiye was searching for one of her calabash so she could go to the stream to fetch water when she discovered it was missing. No doubt, she knew it was Iwalewa that might have taken the calabash. Out of annoyance, she stormed Iwalewa’s hut to search for her but she couldn’t find her. She stormed out of her hut heading to the stream. On her way to the stream, she met Iwalewa on the way. Without thinking twice, Jaiye pushed Iwa and she fell down, hence, making the calabash on her head fell and scattered. Jaiye was filled with rage and she engaged in a fight with Iwa. Iwalewa tried fighting back but Jaiye was having an upper hand. She knew she had to escape and run for her life. She managed to push Jaiye away from her while she ran home. Unknowing to Iwalewa, the moment she pushed Jaiye, she hit her head on a big stone which was close by. Jaiye touched her head and she saw the blood, her rage increased and she shouted with all her might and within a twinkling of an eye, she transformed into a spring.
