Contrary to popular opinion, we don’t need money to survive. I have been shouted down in seminars, been called a hippy and told I’m far removed from reality for even suggesting it – but the fact of the matter is, it’s true.

Does money matter? Of course, but only in the context of how society, the financial and monetary systems are currently structured for us. We are told that without money we can’t survive and without a job you can’t make money and so the story goes and the dilemma begins.

How does a small piece of paper come to rule your whole life? It’s certainly not by co-incidence, there’s a whole history, philosophy, political ideology, all man-made, that has resonated through the ages and continues to do so. From Adam Smith, to Karl Marx, Communism, Socialism, Capitalism and Everything in between, everyone has always tried to figure it out for us. But ultimately money is a form of control and social order.

It’s about the allocation of resources and control of those resources. Food, Water, Iron, Copper, Gold, Uranium, Oil, Coal, Gas – some we probably do need to survive and others are used to fuel a giant economy that produces things we actually believe we need, but in reality is just some form of desire that’s been manufactured for us.

Let’s not complicate it. When you really think about it, the only thing we actually need (really need) to survive and lead happy, healthy and fruitful lives is Food, Water, Fire, Shelter and a sense of Social Connectedness – science will tell you that. Nothing else really matters in the greater scheme of things, well at least it doesn’t matter enough to be leading miserable, purposeless lives void of any meaning.

How on earth will we survive without money? In the modern world, its difficult, because we are somewhat caught up in the web. But it’s certainly not as difficult as we think and it all begins with a shift in our worldview.

We often mistake wants with needs. The issue is not money per se, the issue is our relationship with money and how we allow it to rule our lives.

Yes, I am about to be shouted down again, you probably don’t agree, but it’s all true. If you were stuck on a deserted island, would you take the fruits, vegetables, clean water, some fertile soil, match sticks and some friends or a suitcase full of cash? Where is the real value?

Think about it, try to grasp that concept for a moment.

Change the way you see the world.
